Pride & Prejudice BTS - Burghley House (2005) - Judi Dench, Keira Knightley Movie HD
This tale of love and values unfolds in the class-conscious England of the late 18th century. The five Bennet sisters - including strong-willed Elizabeth and young Lydia - have been raised by their mother with one purpose in life: finding a husband. When a wealthy bachelor takes up residence in a nearby mansion, the Bennets are abuzz. Amongst the man's sophisticated circle of friends, surely there will be no shortage of suitors for the Bennet sisters. But when Elizabeth meets up with the handsome and - it would seem - snobbish Mr. Darcy, the battle of the sexes is joined.

What an interesting interview and story about Burghley House! Lady Victoria Leatham is a lovely person and I thank her parents for preserving their ancestral home the way they did. It is a shame the British government forces people to give up the bulk of their inheritance and thereby endanger the upkeep of these grand family homes. Bravo to them and all the others who were able to open their homes to the public to both share the uniqueness and grandeur of the homes, and to preserve them through the entrance fees.

While it's indeed great this beautiful place was kept up, and it's hard to see how it can be done without a united "guiding vision", do you really think it was great that basically a dozen or so people owned this massive place, plus the surrounding land and villages? When at the same time, somewhere like London or Birmingham, you had 10s of thousands of people crammed into a similar area, living on a few pennies a day, if they were were lucky. So while the 80% estate tax was a blunt instrument, the idea was that some of that wealth be transferred to the benefit of all. At least now more of us get the benefit of visiting these beautiful places, which would have been impossible as "common people" (unless we were tenants).

The comment about it being surprising to see Lady Catherine surrounded by nudes is a very shallow comment made by a young man who needs a better understanding of Art History. In the history of western art, there are three main forms of painting- Religious art (for churches, chapels, monasteries and private devotion), Portraits, of people who want, or need to be commemorated. (It might be because they are important or it might be simply because they are rich enough to have their faces, and their wives and kids, painted), Secular painting. This was purely for decoration and ONLY THE RICH could afford it. Secular painting would include anything that the patron was interested in. Classial Mythology was a very popular subject because well-educated people knew the stories. So you would reasonably expect to see paintings of naked gods and godesses, nymphs, satyrs, and other mythological beings in paintings, or even directly in murals on the walls of a grand home. In other words, only people as rich as the Burghleys (or the de Burghs of the story) would have nudes on the walls. It is exactly appropriate to her wealth. Other popular secular subjects that would appear in paintings (rather than mural painting) in wealthy homes would be landscapes, seascapes, hunting sceenes, battles and still lifes- fruit, vegetable flowers ,meat etc.
@xtxpxhx
@xtxpxhx 5 жыл бұрын
I believe the director was commenting on Lady Catherine's personality ... She's set off as a rather prudish character, overly concerned with ceremony and proper behavior. I don't think Judy Dench portrayal necessarily reflects the supposed shallowness of the original character, in the contrary she ends up giving her an unintended air off distinction.
@MandyJMaddison
@MandyJMaddison 5 жыл бұрын
xtph, The filming was done on location, and they are the paintings on the walls of the house. It is the sort of interior that Lady Catherine would live in. "Prudish" is not the right word to use for her. The upper classes were in general a great deal less prudish than the lower classes. Her concern is for the proper order of things in terms of class status. An "air of distinction" is EXACTLY what Lady Catherine should have. Lady Catherine is a very controlling person, BUT she is in a position of control. She is the queen of her own domain- house, land, inheritance, the benefice of a church, tenants etc. She has the power to make a big difference in the lives of many people.

@@MandyJMaddison I agree but I'm referring to the characterization in the novel. This adaptation of course is very dissimilar it has tinges of romanticism that reminds me more of a Bronte's novel. I notice Will Wright often does this ih his movies..

@MandyJMaddison 5 жыл бұрын
xtph, Yes, I think that youare exactly right in your comparison of the romanticising here and the Brontes. It isn't really appropriate here. I don't like this adaptation for a number of reasons. But there is one moment of acting which is so exquisitely poignant that it makes up for all the shortcomings. It is Brenda Blethyn as Mrs Bennet when Mr Bingley comes to call near the end of the movie and she says to him something like "And Jane...she is looking well?" and she is pleading with all her heart for her daughter. It is very rare for an actor to be able to summon such deep emotion into so few words. But she manages to convey just how much a mother feels at seeing her child suffering in silence.

@@MandyJMaddison she's the least worst Mrs Bennet for sure. I love the few tender moments between her and Mr Bennet. I take it as the few little things Lizzie's gaze also misses. Such scenes are not Austen's, but I can't deny those are the reasons that bring me back to this movie. I won't judge this adaptation too harshly against the novel because I can see they are really two different narratives. I enjoy how different backgrounds can tell the same story in vastly different ways.

The problem became extreme when a person suddenly inheritted a huge estate, and then the inheritance was treated as "annual income"..... as if they were going to earn that much every year. It was a crippling problem which meant that stately homes like Burghley could not be supported by the person who inheritted them. The contents would then be sold at auction, and the house sold to a hotel chain or something like that, and a marvellous collection accumulated over many years, and part of the UK's heritage would be lost. Eventually it was realised that this could not continue. Death duties were reduced to something more reasonable, and a nice arrangement was made so that the new owner of an estate like this could donate an important artwork to the state, instead of paying death duties. So the National Gallery in London has some important paintings, including a small Raphal that were acquired for the nation by this means. And as Lady Burghley pointed out, many of the aristocratic landowners funded the upkeep of their homes by opening them to the public. This includes many of the most architecturally important houses, and some of the finest private collections.

@@useridgaf-p6b I can see why you would think that but Don't forget that these estates employed hundreds of people over several générations and they were not 'underpaid and overworked' it was a different time. After the first world war when sometimes two générations were killed for their country the descendants had to pay death duty twice and in the 1950's the tax was up to 80% of the value so in doing this they killed hundreds of employments for many struggling familes who all lost their breadwinners. This had for effect the end of security for the poor families immediately after the two wars. I have know some of these big house owners and they don't live like lords, they generally live in the back of the house as the main house is open to visitors to pay for the taxes and maintain the roof etc. Many of them eat in the kitchen, do their own gardens and maintain the lands from early to late. There are exceptions, families like the Rotheschilds who can 'afford' it but they are in a minority. It's easy to judge when you Don't know the whole story and Don't forget that they have never known another life than dedication to their estates and their workers. Also many of these families were responsable for building up the industry that we today take for granted and in doing so made the fortunes of the middle class who in turn employed the working class. It IS a system that is dying off slowly, I Don't feel sorry for them I just understand them perhaps better than you do.

@@TheFiown Perhaps I care more about the welfare of the common people who had to work on these estates and in their sweat shop factories. The common man makes the money for these leeches to live off of. The estates should be turned over to the state for the benefit of everyone. Just because you are born into a family does not give you the right to enslave others for your benefit.

@@useridgaf-p6b It seems we cannot agree then. If you care about the 'welfare' of the 'common' people then why not sympathise with them Following the destruction of these estates that provided them with work and housing. It wasn't perfect in our modern eyes but it was society Under construction, not a finished model. If the 'leeches' made money then so did the common man ( although I Don't know why you use that term ) And I add that for your information most of these estates do belong to the National Trust after being gifted by the owners who only live in small areas of the estates. I regret the destruction of our cultural heritage and the works of many great architects along with the interiors that were build and decorated by your 'common men' and of which they were really proud. It is easy for you to judge today from in front of your computer but back in these days society was struggling to form what we call modern day society and making mistakes along the way. You have your point of view which seems to me to be biaised and based on lack of information but it IS your point of view as I have mine ( based on research and marked interest, coming from a 'common' background )

kaduzy the 80% tax rate applied to very high incomes only. I’m not justifying it, but that’s why there wasn’t a revolution, because most ordinary people would be happy to see the rich paid a lot more than them in taxes.

The novels of Jane Austen were in fact written by Jane's sophisticated and educated cousin, Eliza de Feuillide. Eliza could not publish under her own name because she was the illegitimate daughter of Warren Hastings, the Governor General of India. To publish under her own name would have caused a scandal. Eliza had a fascinating life, completely different from the dull life of Jane Austen. She was born in Calcutta in India and given £10,000 by Warren Hastings to pay for her literary and musical education in London. She married a French count who was executed in the French Revolution. She spoke perfect French and played the piano, harp and harpsichord. Her second husband was Jane Austen's brother, Henry. They lived together in London and frequently visited the opera and theatre. Eliza acted in amateur theatricals similar to those in Mansfield Park and she was an accomplished amateur comedian. To find out about the fascinating life of Eliza and how the events in her life inspired each of the novels you can read my book "Jane Austen - a New Revelation".

The same is said about Molière in France sometimes, that he did not write his plays, but that Corneille wrote them for him... I always find this theories interesting only if they reveal something about the writing, the style of the author (for example a study I read showed that Corneille and Molière used the same vocabulary - which can just very well be the vocabulary of their time). Eliza did seem a well educated woman, but that does not make a writer (nor does the fact that she spoke French - or that makes me a writer!) Do you think all the letters Austen wrote about her work are forgeries (or was she telling falsehoods in true Wickham style) ? I'm just curious.

Whatever you say, but I don't agree, actually Jane Austen got her inspiration from Eliza' s life because apparently her brother was smitten with her. In fact Jane wrote a play or some short tale about them ... One of her characters in Mansfield park it's said to be inspired by her, as was the play, in Jane's family they did these plays as in that novel... Anyway sorry but there is a lot of correspondence with her sister that talks about her novels so... Sorry but I don't buy it :/

Lovely scenery and cinematography in this version, but the two leads simply did not have the depth to portray Jane Austen characters. Effectively, this production dilutes a literary classic into a Disney Princess film, but without the magic pumpkin or loquacious mice.
