I did this on my wife's 2007 a couple of years ago. Definite PITA. I emailed you asking if you thought it was ok to start the engine w/o the alternator to check that nothing was leaking and there doesn't seem to be a problem but the flashing Check Engine made me shut it off shortly after I checked for leaks. Re-installing the Alt made it go away. Not sure why the computer would get upset like that.

The socket for the fog relay only has a metal connector. If i use a small wire to jump current in the fuse box from the horn relay socket to the fog relay socket the fog lamp works.

Hello, The job went all but fine. The lower radiator hose, thermostat connection with the quick connect clip. There is a oring and plastic ring. What is the proper orientation/trick to get this back together? The oring and plastic ring came out of the hose.
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 3 жыл бұрын
Insert the o-ring and then insert the plastic ring (concave side of ring vacing out of the hose). That plastic ring should actually be fused to the inside of the flange... meaning that it broke loose. You can still use the flange / hose, but in the long run, you will need to replace it. To get a better idea how the ring is supposed to go into the flange... take the ring and slide it up the thermostat fitting. You will be able to see which way it sits correctly, then install it into the flange, so that it faces the thermostat fitting the same way.

Year, make, model, engine? If the engine has a belt driven water pump, it's probably a bad water pump or broken water pump belt (if the pump has its own belt). Could even be a broken balance shaft (engines with timing chain & balance shafts).

So I just recently got a 2006 Jetta with this engine , I live in Canada so right now is cold af so that doesn’t help but the car doesn’t seem to warm up very much unless the car is driving and even driving seems a little under normal operating temp . But I have no warning lights what so ever ... I would assume thermostat would be the blame here ? Just seems like a lot of work and want a second opinion before I decide to do it lol . Car has 203,000km (126 miles )
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, most likely thermostat. Temperature needle should go to the middle fairly quickly and stay there. If the needle drops when the vehicle is moving, that's another sign that the thermostat is opening too soon / staying open too long.

Hello, Audi TT 2.0L turbo I replaced the thermostat 10/2020. Today I noticed dipping under the car. I removed the belly pan, i still see dipping. Very difficult to see parts so I removed parts to gain access to the tstat area. Dripping stopped so I psi tested system no leaks noted. Would a water pump spill coolant to the area of the tstat or are we getting deeper to a head gasket. System seems to hold 13-15 psi ok. What might your thought be? Thank You
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 3 жыл бұрын
I have yet to come across head gasket failures on these 2.0T engines (obviously if a major overheating event took place, that's a different story) so I don't think that's the issue. Depending on what / where the leak is... pressure testing can actually help seal a leak. Temperature also plays a roll. Run the engine for a bit and then shut off. As the engine cools, it might start leaking enough for you to chase it. The water pump leaks at the front of the engine and should not leak towards the thermostat area. Water pump dripping will be from behind the crankshaft pulley. You might have to go back in fully to see if the thermostat is sealing correctly.

I noticed a wet spot at the bottom of the thermostat housing. You can not reach into the area. Looking from the bottom up between oil pan an a/c comp bracket. Ahhh such a job and you can not even dry it off to confirm. I have the car half torn apart to access tstat area. I’m guessing no relocation kit is available for the tstat? I put a Mahle tstat on. Say do you have any women mechanics in your shop? I go into a chemical plant and in the maintenance shop there's a bathroom and while it has a door we never close it, well unless Anthony is in there and he does that as a warning for the rest of us. Well now there are some women engineers and safety instructors so we gotta close the door just in case they might walk by. Oh and I wonder if you would be allow to say mating surfaces and it not be call herassment. Herassment I can't leave the door open anymore.

This one was only in for the thermostat... no need to sell the alternator, but yeah, I'm sure Steve would have probably replaced it so he wouldn't have to worry about it. LOL

Sometimes the time spend / hassle trying to get it done, is not worth it. A quicker turnaround time & warranty for the work done, is worth the money.
