Your skilled with that razor. I'd have sliced my finger for sure. I've watched quiet a few videos on similar vehicles and I'm always amazed at how many steps there are to replace a timing belt. But with your skill and some nice tools you did it again...you made it look easy.

Your videos are among my favorite when it comes to A4 Volkswagens. I really appreciate you posting this stuff here!! Just used this, and a few install videos to change the timing belt on my '04 New Beetle! I now understand why none of the videos on this engine's timing belt are shown being changed in a Beetle! The working space in this car is abysmal!! 😂 God bless you. Thank you!

It might seem like there's less room, but it's actually quite similar. It's just that the fender hangs over a little more into the engine bay of the Beetle. Thank you for watching!

Hello Thomas. Thanks again for the great videos. I just changed my timing belt. This is the second time I do it. The first time I had no issues. This time, after completing the job, I started the car and listened to the engine. Car started right up and sounded great while idling. Let the car run for about 10 mins while putting stuff away. Drove out of my garage and about 100 ft to where I park it and let ir run another 5 mins. When I got back in the car I noticed cold air coming out of the vents even though the temp needle is showing the engine is warm. (I also changed the thermostat as it came with the timing belt kit) Press on the accelerator and heat starts coming out of the vents but only when I am pressing on the gas pedal. Otherwhise -cold air. As I am pressing on the accelerator I notice that when I get up to around 3500 rpm the engine stutters ( or misses ) and the traction control light comes on as well as the glow plug light flashed briefly. It did this twice in a row so I shut the engine off. I am confident I did the procedure correctly and even checked that the crank tool and camshaft locking pin slid easily into position after the belt install. (but must have done something wrong) Repeated the test (turn engine over twice and re insert pin and crank tool) 3 times before deciding It was good and moving on. Any idea what is causing symptoms? Thanks in advance for your time, Dominic.

Air pocket in cooling system / heater core for lack of heat, would be my first guess. Extended high rpm / driving should push the air out of the core. Once the coolant cools off, fluid level will most likely drop in the reservoir, at which point you can top it up. I don't know what would cause traction light to flash or the stuttering... if it continues after a few key cycles / engine starts & stops... then the ECM might set a fault code that might help with troubleshooting.
@dominicst-denis5465
@dominicst-denis5465 Жыл бұрын
Hi Thomas. Thanks for the reply. The heater issue seems to be resolved. The coolant did go down and I was able to add more. As for the traction control light it was off after restarting the car. I notice now that the stutter only happens when I "double pump" the gas pedal at around 3500 rpm and riggers the traction control light. Difference now is that on the restart the engine light was on. I scanned it with vcds and got a few codes: - In address 01(Engine) 1 - 16618 - Boost pressure regulation P0234 limit exceeded (overboost condition) 2 - 16791 EGR sensor 2 P0407 signal too low 3 - 16787 EGR valve (N18)P0403 malfunction 4- 16705 Engine speed sensor (G28) P0321 implausible signal. - In address 02 (auto transmission) 1 - 00529 engine speed signal missing / intermittent 2 - 00300 trans fluid temp sensot (G93) 3 - 01166 engine torque signal intermittent - In address 03 ABS Brakes - 01314 engine control module / check DTC memroy intermittent. In the last month the car twice went into limp mode when trying to accelerate after slowing down slightly at 125 / 130 km/h Sorry for the overload of info but I figured the more you have should could probably help you figure it out. Thanks again, Dominic.

Great video Thomas. you make it look easier then I do. Question, my BEW tdi has 324,000 miles. Mpg has dropped to avg 35mpg. Common problems I could look for? Should I worry about adjusting injectors, they are still within 1.0 on VCDS. Should I worry about oil pump? Still running good.
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 7 жыл бұрын
I don't know enough about TDI's to know what MPG should be or what to look for when things seem off (I only see them for maintenance and other non-mpg related issues)... all the TDI's we work on are short distance stop & go driven by their owners, so I have never received feedback as to MPG. Check the usual (which I'm sure you have) suspects, try fuel additives, check cam lobes, drain the intercooler of oil. At that high mileage a lot of things come to mind that should be / could be checked, that could cause an issue (mechanical) down the road.

Thomas, can you help me understand stretch bolts (ie. TTY)? Are they just regular 10.9 bolts? Do I really need to exchange the ones for the engine mounts and brackets each time? Do I need to use the VW brand or is there a cheaper alternative? Thanks for your instructions.
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS Жыл бұрын
I'm not an engineer, so I can't say if strength rating alone is enough. For initial torque, sure. I would think that a TTY bolt is of a softer material, which allows it to be "stretched"... where as a regular bolt might twist or snap. I have reused TTY engine mount bolts on my personal vehicles, but without fully going the specified angle. A good parts supplier will include all needed bolts in a timing belt kit.

Bought a high miler, to try out my first TDI - 480,000 KM , but the car doesn't look it. The car rides beautifully and has a very luxurious feel . Love the 5 speed tiptronic.. Currently doing pre safety work on all things rotating on the axles except the front bearings which are still good. @EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 7 жыл бұрын
Should be better... you don't have any "running issues" once the engine is running, right? Hard acceleration, cruising etc, no issues? Then the pump should be good enough. The test was just to get an idea of fuel flow. Once you have a pressure gauge attached, you can see what pressure is in the system. On a cold engine, it will start at 0... during cranking, it should quickly increase past 30-40psi. If it takes a long time to build pressure, then there could be an issue.

Hi Thomas, My B6 Audi A4 1.9Tdi has what I believe a leaking water pump, coolant is dripping bad from underneath the front timing belt area of the longitudinal engine. Interval for timing belt is 60k miles and have 40k miles on the belt. Can the water pump alone be replaced or would you advise doing the belt alongside the water pump i.e is it roughly the same amount of labor hours to do either jobs? Thanks man
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 5 жыл бұрын
You can replace just the pump... but I would to a complete timing belt kit. Yes, because of the labor involved. The belt may also be contaminated by coolant... which will affect overall life. Let's say you leave the belt, tensioner & roller... you change the pump, then after 20K it's time to do the belt & other components. Will the new pump last another 60k?
@maximusaurelius7306
@maximusaurelius7306 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah thats true, a water pump wont last 2 belts so your right...really its a false economy not doing the belt, tensioner, roller and water pump altogether. Haven't replaced a cam on one of these (BEW / BRM / PD TDI) yet... only an injector so far. As long as you have a service manual or instructions that came with the kit, you should be fine. There are stretch bolts that you need to replace and you'll need some specific tools as well as a dial indicator to adjust injector preload. The center crank bolt does NOT have to be removed to get the pulley off. What is it that you are trying to replace? The 4 small bolts are 10Nm+90... the center crank bolt (19mm 12 point) is 120Nm+90. You only have to remove that bolt if you are changing the crank seal or the gear.

@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 5 жыл бұрын
Why wait until it leaks to replace it? Will it last the life of the new belt? Maybe... maybe not. Isn't that also why we replace the water pump? I'd rather replace it sooner than having to go back in before the belt is do again. If I remember correctly, there was some oil.

+Armando Hilario It's OK... a small difference is OK. When it is cranking a long time, you have to check spark, injector pulse, fuel pressure, EVAN purge solenoid, crankshaft position sensor signal... anything that could cause long cranking time. Sometimes it is quicker, cheaper & easier to take the car to a mechanic and let him find the problem. If the only issue is long cranking (no issue when driving)... leave it until it gets worse. The problem might be easier to find then.

what its the correct temperature for coolant
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 7 жыл бұрын
When the engine is cold, coolant temperature should be close to ambient air temperature. If it is, great... if coolant temperature sensor value is much colder, then the sensor is bad.

My coworker lifts / raises the engine quite high when he does timing belts... I'm too chicken / worried about raising the engine too much. Instead, I loosely position the timing belt around the crankshaft and then position the bracket into place. Once the bracket bolts hold the bracket, I continue with positioning & tensioning the timing belt. Once the belt is tight, I tighten down the bracket bolts.

@@cincoseistres you can check camshaft deviation / offset with a scan tool... +/- 3 degrees if I remember correctly. If it doesn't set any cam codes, it's probably OK / close enough.

Did you have that code before the timing belt was done? If yes, then it's not related to what you did. If no, you need to check all your air hose / pipe fittings. Also check how much vacuum is getting to the turbo actuator... and if the actuator is able to hold vacuum.
