Just replaced mine on a 2009 2.0TSI 101k miles with 5 degree chain stretch. I couldnt believe how easy the ring pops off and the inevitable chain stretch just makes the risk ten fold. A must for anyone who owns the 2009-2012 engine

Finally a clear video illustrating the failing part and now I understand exactly what the part looks like and why it fails! Time to get that part k ..ive been quoted $1000 aus to get the tensioner upgraded is there anyway i can get it done cheaper??

I have a 2014 cbfa. slight rattle on start up when sitting for like 45 mind or so. is the tensioner Bad? it should be revision ed. so why would it rattle?

When exactly this part got fixed, got updated properly so as to function correctly? Do you know month and year of the successful update? Were there failing updates as well? Do we know them? Thanks. Jetta 1.4 TSI owner with much money thrown and much trouble suffered for this vw failure. 2 times replaced time chain kit for what that means and going for my third.

This can be fixed ive done 3. After expanding the tensioner into place and timing the vehicle correctly, remember there are dual balace shafts on this motor (every 7 turns all 3 timing marks will match up then time to the top) measure the distance of shiny area in the tensioner to the pad it rests against on the guide. Turn a metal tube on a lathe with the id the same as the OD of the tensioner shaft about 1/16th thick wall. Then section the tube legnthwise, assemble the halves onto the shiniy tensioner area and use 2 industrial zipties to hold the tube halves in place. the tensioner will never compress again due to low oil pressure

I had mine go bad after 129k miles. It completely trashed the engine, so I had to purchase a used engine. VW told me to pound sand. A truly horrid engineering design for a very critical engine function. Please post a link to the TSB. Thanks!
