Here's the latest with what's going on with my bug! Switched from that porsche fan style cooling to Jake Raby's DTM cooling. Awesome craftsmanship! Watch it in HD!!!

Not a silly question at all! There are some slight modifications you need to do to bolt it up. You need to use any flywheel that is NOT the 228mm FW (too big to fit in the bug bellhousing) They come in 215mm, 210mm or the best is the conversion 200mm flywheel. Then you need to press a pilot bearing into the center of the flywheel. (Like the bearing on the glandnut in a type 1) This is because in a bus, the input shaft is longer and that pilot bearing is actually inside the FW side of the crank!

SBs look so good as German look, love those Porsche cup wheels on a Super. I run some dellorto 40's too! Really good carbs. Car sounds good too, even the trick exhaust!

Is your engine the 2056cc or the 2.2 liter?. I have on of Jake's 2056cc engine kits, one of the last of his balanced kits that he offered balancing as an option. I just need to assemble it. Very nice, thanks for sharing! Eric Dee.

Hey! 1. The exhaust are just a couple custom welded glasspacks that came with the engine 2. These carbs are 36 Dellortos, with 34mm venturis 3. I wish i could tell you, I picked out a bunch of blues i liked when we were going to paint it, but my dad came home with a gallon of that. :\ wish i could be more helpful. Unmixed, it has a hint of green to it - hope that may help!

Very clean install! Looks and sounds great. Did you retain factory heat exchangers and do you still have heat and defrost inside the car? Thanks
@477racing
@477racing 8 жыл бұрын
+jarmolade unfortunately i coudn't keep the heat exchangers, I am sure it's possible to fabricate a working system using stock type 4 exchangers and some duct work, though... The exhaust is one of the hardest parts about the conversion... actually that may not be true anymore, there are more option out there that you can buy on the internet now! :O but of course that's all $$$. I was lucky the engine i bought had some fabbed pipes. Really poor design and they had some leaks (see my other videos) but they were something.

I love your car. I have seen the vids for a while of you building her up. I have a 1969 VW Bug I am rebuilding right now. So, I have 3 questions: 1. What exhaust are you running now? 2. What size dual carbs are you running? 3. What is the name of the color blue on your bug? Thanks!

Nice. The Supers haven't always been the favorite among Bug people. But the '71 and '72 with the flat windshield and dash look decent to me. I've owned several Standard and Supers. Both my Supers were '71's.....my favorite being my Hugger Orange Baja (street only, of course, being a Super) with old school white wagon wheels. I miss that car! Nice job on your's, BTW!

firstmusic00 ...pssshh... Super Beetles are the bastard result of US department of transportation regulations... which stripped everything that was great from a beetle... They are ugly af. Literally, I hate them.

Quite honestly, I don’t mind Super Beetles. The 1302 Beetle I’m not a big fan of, but the 1303 is just…lush. I really want one, but the little bugger bought it a few days after I last checked. If anything, the Standard Beetles is more of a go to for me.

I have a chopped 59 bug that I did the same installation on. ! My problem was that there is no available exhaust that you can buy. I ended up fabricating a set. Instead of adding a muffler, I used motorcycle baffles that I had inserted into the pipes prior to final welding. The seem to work fine and are not too loud. The whole project was challenging, but worth it! the DTM kit is great! I just wished that their instructions were a little more complete!

I'm doing a similar conversion on my oval. Any problems with heat build up? How did you tackle the engine tins? I'm really struggling to line mine up with the engine bay seal :( Seems like my motor is about 1" to high at the rear (or maybe the rear is 1" too low - may have had some damage repairs in the last 60 years). Thanks Rich

I never had the chance to put a CHT gauge on there and confirm what the temp of the heads was, but I can assure you, raby makes a damn good product and I trust running his shroud without a gauge. The trick is fabricating the rear engine tins to seal the engine bay. I never had the chance as I had a valve spring break on me, so I had to pull the engine out. I feel for you on the engine bay size thing. I have Topline maxx struts up front and the driver side is at the highest setting but still barely clears the tire and the passenger side is dropped about three notches and has a gap you can run two fingers width through.. Go figure.. Possibly different fenders I guess. Best of luck, and post a video reply! I'd love to see it up and running!

Incredible job. I really wish you’d remake it with a camera mount in hopes you could get on it and also in hope the video would be stable. Either way, I’m am in awe of your work. I’m building my daughter a 71 Karman Ghia, and I think the 1600 do is too weak for modern driving. Thank you very mych

YES! It's a stock 1971 super transaxle - 4.12 R&P, 215mm flywheel and pressure plate and a 200mm clutch disk from my type 1. NOT the ideal combination, but my 215mm clutch disk that came with it was too thick! when I bolted on the pressure plate, it compressed the fingers on it - effectively making me have no usable clutch! In the future I am going to buy a lightened 200mm "conversion" flywheel which allows for a much larger selection of clutch disks and pressure plates!

I bought it from a dude in Lake County, CA and ran it for a while until I rebuilt it with a cam and 96mm p's and c's. Then I rebuilt it with better heads. Now it's sold. I think I originally paid around 1.5k.

type4store.com prices can vary depending on how crazy you want to go. They're not really cheap, but you're paying for some serious R&D and engineering. Truly a high quality product. If you don't believe me, research the DTM vs. Porsche fans.

What's the difference between this and cb performance for vw? Our I am I better off just putting a supercharger on stock 1600 engine?
@477racing
@477racing 7 жыл бұрын
The benefits of the type 4 engine are stock oil filtration, more robust components, and the fact your basically sticking with an original vw/porsche engine design. The sky's the limit when it comes to modding vw's, people even put in water cooled subaru engine swaps! I don't know about super charging your bug, but I would maybe look into turbo set ups. That's what I want to do next. CB performance sells lots of stuff, you'll have to be more specific. I will say this though: Type 4 components and builds will be more expensive, as the market is not as large as the type 1 engine stuff.
