Do you have a fear of public charging?
In this video, I leave the house without enough charge to get home and go all out to cure my fear of public charging.
I got scared, I got angry, I started shouting but did I manage it?
I hope you enjoy this one, I loved making it!

I am 76 year old male driver and considering purchasing an E car. Your post has helped me understand a lot that the manufactures won’t tell you or car sales persons don’t know or find it important. The Ebola sounds like the ideal car for my purpose. Your clear to the point explanation is first rate and helped to fill in the blanks.

Your content is great, you are such a personable person, handsome and speak fancy English. I was looking at chargepoint for FL, where my Mom lives near Vero almost no public charging. I found a quad charger in the middle of nowhere and couldn'f for the life of me figure out why it was there, then I put on satelitte view and realized i was a many, many acres solar farm with free charging. My Mom just got 26 panels on her roof. Just need to get her and EV in future.

As an experienced NL e-Golf driver (1,5 years now) B for city driving and D on the highway. We can charge with just one RIFD-card on all charging points. I personally prefer FastNed (It' ain't much if it ain't Dutch ;-)>), but they really got it. 350 kWh chargers are getting installed all over the place.

Local roads: B. Highway: D1. Thanks for video! Glad you got a charge with 9 miles on GOM. If only all charging worked like Tesla supercharging. We can dream.

Great video Steve. I'm currently driving a PHEV as a stepping stone to a full EV. I will mostly charge at home but my regular journeys through France will rely on public chargers when I get an EV so I remain hesitant about taking the next step. I think I need to see reports of a better public charger network before I go full EV. P.S. I can't afford a Tesla.......

Public charging my VW eGolf in the states is a gamble. ChargePoint (which is what the eGolf was advertised with when I leased vehicle)is about as bad as your GeniePoint (stops and starts a bunch & isn't reliable, you have to babysit the charger and sometimes call the operators for help). I've found that the company Volta offers free 7kW chargers around my city (West Los Angeles), but they're hard to find not taken by another EV user or ICEd out by those inconsiderate drivers. One of the best public EV charging companies I've found, though it is a little more expensive (because each owner/realtor sets their own price); is EVGO. We have a free, convenient app in the states called Plugshare that is quite good/reliable. It offers a map all the public chargers, driving directions, a rating of the different chargers, the brand of charger, also allows you to plan/map out a longer trip, and pictures! It also allows private chargers to be part of the network--just those kind, pay-it-forward kind of people who want to help a person out.

I tend to use ACC on highways and cruise along using 5/10% battery. Recup is better in cities but also really good coming down from a high terrain

I have a gene point by work. The web based app is terrible but I have got the card for it and it works fine. But is annoying it’s not instavolt that works every time without fail.

My experience of public charge points in the north east has been entirely different. Not least is the fact we have the fewest in the country outside of Wales. I don’t find zap map to have enough detail in some areas like parking charges, sometimes no detail on charge costs either 🤦🏻‍♂️. Unlike other areas free charging doesn’t really exist here and charge prices I find quite costly in terms of encouraging EV use. 39p/kwh equates to approx 12.2p per mile in the E-Golf (winter economy of 3.2m/kwh). To me that’s not an incentive if I’m paying ICE prices. Others that have connection charges and then charge 30p/kwh and then having parking time limits and only charge at around 7kw, again limiting range. I bought my car in winter. I’ve yet to see warm weather so hoping my 3.2 average jumps up soon. 80% of my driving is work so it works for me in that regard. But doing anything else I just dont feel the area has the infrastructure and pricing. Pod point and Lidl with rapid chargers @23p/kWh though are spot on I feel. It was also really simple to use once the account was created (disclosure, you have to pre top up at £5 increments which is a slight negative if you don’t plan to use often). In closing, any charge point where you pay on average more than 25p/kwh - 30p/kWh(max) i just don’t see the value changing from an ice car (def not an economical ice car either). One final thing with zap map. It displays too many restricted/ business charge points that are staff or customers only. Which if you’re not familiar with area isn’t helpful!

Had good experiences so far with Polar, Instavolt and Shell (plus some slow charging on a Podpoint). Early days but not had a problem yet. Position of the charging point is good for at home but I find really awkward on some rapids, lots of bays are positioned so they expect you to be nose in.

Agreed re charging position. Interestingly (for me anyway!) the Golf GTE has it’s charging point at the front.

Can someone please explain how at 2:20 he got 40kw of power out of a type2 connector? Isn't it AC which maxes out at 22kw?

A roads, B roads and motorway then I always have the regen off as its more efficient, I find, to coast rather than slow down to speed up. Around turn I have it on regen 1. And I use B'gen to slow/control my speed down steep hills. I've used instavolt once and it was simple. I've used free 7kw pod points but unless you're going to leave them on for several hours then I would rather take the a more convenient parking space

Public charging feels like pot luck based on my very limited experience. I'm 1,000 miles into my e-Golf with an easy free vend at Ecotricity South Mimms and a total failure on two different CYC posts at a Morrisons. I only hear good things about Instavolt.

It’s certainly not as simple as petrol or diesel. I think as time goes on, we’ll get used to the nuances of each company, plus they will work to make things simpler.

Why do you have to have apps or contracts? Why is the default payment not contactless credit card ? Even if that was the charging equivalent of a pay as you go phone. Say 40p per kWh and if you want a lower price then go contract with apps and fobs etc.

Is it true the E-Golf can only handle 1 DC fast charge per day? I'm considering one as a bridge vehicle from my 530e lease end in the spring until all of the new EVs are readily available later in 2021.
@SteveJulien
@SteveJulien 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. You can DC fast charge several times a day. You may find after 2 DC charges on one day, the 3rd is a little slower.

Comparing a tesla with every other car for charging is a little cheating.. Tesla isn't exactly an average Joe's car. They are still on the high end of ownership. Most of us have no choice, but to use these other charger networks.. I still liked your vid, but I hate when people compare a tesla to everythjbg else out there. It's not apples for apples.

Hi Steve, I'll be unashamedly plagiarising some of your content! Audi has launched a new E-Tron Charging Service using one RFID card. WHY. when everyone has a phone or credit/bank cards. What a backward step! Assume these will have to be posted with a letter to make you fees special! When we all trying to reduce wasteful tech, plastic and paper!
