VW Golf R vs Audi S3 manual vs automatic DRAG RACE - what difference does the gearbox make?

The premise of this video is to show you the performance difference you get between the VW Group dual-clutch automatic gearbox and the manual. To illustrate this we effectively have two identical cars in terms of their engines and AWD transmissions. Yes, one is the Golf R and the other the Audi S3 - that's because we couldn't get both a manual and auto Golf R together... but this is the next best thing. Watch to see the difference.

Matt, the reason why it’s faster is not because you’re comparing 7 ratios to 6, it’s because every time you manually change gear there is 0 acceleration on your car for a lot longer than on the auto. DSG is 0.1 seconds or less, human is maybe 0.7. Change 4 gears and DSG has lost 0.4 seconds of full throttle, human has lost 2.8 seconds
@Trappygit
@Trappygit 6 жыл бұрын
^^This. As cars get faster (through better technology or just modifying) the gear change time becomes far more important. A second or more lost from 0-100mph is HUGE.Incidentally, I've been calculating car performance accurately using spreadsheets for years and use 0.3 seconds for manual gear change with 'no mechanical sympathy' and that seems pretty reliable.

Not just that, don't forget if the car is turbo once build up it stays on FULL boost, where is on the manual it will have to build up AGAIN after each gear change, but you'll get a nice sound if you have a BOV -) anyway watch my video vs supra, I have an auto -)

So much wrong with your testing, first of all, you need to have the same car so two Golf Rs one with a manual and another with an Auto. Second, you need to turn off the traction control as it is the main cause for the bog you are talking about between 1st and 2nd gear shifts. Third, you need to powershift or no lift shift to keep up with an Automatic especially in a Turbo car as all the boost is lost between shifts if you let off the throttle. Redo your test and you will see that the difference is going to be negligible with a slight edge to Automatic but not as large as you make it seem.

I've driven this Golf R (DSG) for the past 2 years. The launch control gets you all giddy and I love it. But all things considered I would have preferred the manual. The reason is that there's tremendous throttle lag no matter what gear or rpm you're at. Obviously in higher rpms it lags less but it's still a buzzkill. I miss the instant throttle response of a manual in skilled hands.

The reason for the DSG pulling more is due to continuous boost pressure. The turbo recirculation path is opened and closed by either an electrical connection from the engine management to a solenoid that is mounted on the turbocharger housing, or by the vacuum created in the intake manifold. As you accelerate, the turbo charger vanes are spinning and boost pressure is increased; literally blowing air into the engine cylinders. Then, when you change gear, you take your foot off of the accelerator and the throttle valve to the engine closes. The problem here is that, during this process, the turbo is still spinning and the boost pressure it is producing has nowhere to go. This is a bit like putting your hand over a hairdryer, so that the air cannot get out. What happens at this point is that the turbo begins to stall - the spinning vanes slow down and the boost pressure drops. When you open the throttle valve again by pushing down on the accelerator (demanding more power), the turbo has lost its momentum and boost pressure, therefore causing a pause or a 'lag', before the engine is producing the required power once again. This problem is helped by fitting a manual car with a diverter valve.

Solomon Tetteh According to some german car magazines the next golf r will get a 3l twin turbo vr6 with 400hp. That would be even cooler because then both audi and vw would have something pretty unique in their lineup. Now the s3 and the r are just the "same" car with the s3 being a bit more luxurious in my opinion.

Have GOT to turn off the traction control on the vw for heavy acceleration. Going from 1->2 with the traction control on causes that heavy dipping of the front end during the shift, if you keep it off then the car doesn't apply brakes and dip engine power to keep the tires from patching out. Citing personal experience with 5spd mk4 and a 6spd mk6 gti and a 6spd b6 passat. The gearing on the manual in 2nd allows more speed than the dsg also, which helps combat the faster shifting of the dsg as well. I call a redo.

I think that the main difference apart from the gear ratios is that the DSG sport mode does a good job at keeping the engine at its peak performance range by shifting where the engine will be at its optimal RPM.

during the downshift at the rolling start you could see the engine rpm where not high enough. it's better to go on the clutch and immediately mash the throttle down. when you then get into gear your rpm's will be higher (possibly at the rev limit) than needed and you actually get a push instead of a braking effect.

In the rolling race, you should have been waiting in the 3rd gear, rather than down shifting from 5th, because it caused to lose time a bit, against a very fast dual clutch gearbox, since it does down shifting much more faster than a human power :)

The clutch plate and gear shift sets you back with an auto there's no slowing down, but I bet if you tried racing a high performance manual with a powerful engine and a faster hydraulic clutch system with instant response with controlled pressure not so it completely slows down but who can make the perfect mechanism to work simultaneously with the flow of your movement..

When the Dual Clutch Auto discussion comes up with my friends I often remind them of the fact that the manual goes off boost and has to go on boost with every change and then there is the time of the shift itself and the ratio between 1st and 2nd is quite wide on most cars, making this worse. A manual GTI launches quite well in the dry, as you can induce some wheelspin and sidestep bogging down. I think the 7th ratio on the Dual Clutch is tall for economy and refinement and that top speed might be achieved in 6th, but I'm not sure. If so, then the ratios might not be closer.
@ashleylemmer8016

The launch control is a massive advantage with the all wheel drive, but I think the Dual Clutch would still win even if the driver just mashed the throttle off the line without using it.

Please ensure you use the DSG Golf R in all future drag races against other marques. All of the races in which you used the manual R would have seen different results...Obviously, in this case it was for a specific reason but, if it's up against the Focus RS for example, spec it appropriately. Although there's nothing wrong with the manual Golf R, it's widely accepted that the DSG option is more in keeping with the car's dual nature and therefore the better choice when comparing it against it's rivals (also in their natural spec). I'd say that the manual on an R would be the option for a driver looking for a more involving drive - most people who buy Golf Rs, according to sales figures, are not in this category. I have DSG on my Golf R hearse and don't miss manual at all.

The Golf is a great looking all rounder. Audi is a quality bit of kit hard one. Great reviews 👍🏼

The Roads are soaking wet, the Audi has better traction that’s it, the DSG will always do it better than the manual no matter how fast you can go up through a manual box...😉

In a real life if automatic has a one small problem you are done. A manual will go on even with broken shifts etc... My car on a trip had broken 3 and 4. I managed make 700 km to home

Drove a dsg it’s fantastically horrible ! Manual all the way you’ve got the power in the gears you can’t just go wrong with enjoying the gear changing and feeling the car move it’s awesome !

Why don't you compare a Golf to a Golf/S3 to an S3, so it's fair.

Autos are quicker and Manuals are faster. Just look at the 991.2 GT3. The 7spd PDK launches to 100 in 3.4s while the 6spd manny is 3.9s. But the top speed for the PDK is 198mph while the manual is 199mph. And the 911 PDK weighs 1430kg while the manual weighs 1413kg.

Having owned both cars the golf r or s3 in manual is terrible, you cannot launch them as they bog down And cut the power this is why every drag race on this channel with other cars and a manual golf r it always comes last, it’s also really slow when drag racing the same cars manual vs dsg feels like the dsg got an 50 extra bhp , after having a race with my mates stock dsg golf r and my manual golf r he was always 3-4. cars in front in the end I got fed up of the manual and after a few weeks traded it in for a dsg one , the dsg also gives you the pops and bangs on upshift and some downshifts unlike the manual which has hardly any real noise, don’t get me wrong I’m not a auto fan but some cars are better in a manual and some in a auto , like my previous car the mk5 golf r32 was better in manual and so was my E46 m3 , but these golf r or s3 are ruined by manual gearboxes

To measure the auto vs manual, both cars need to be same model, my point of view even the golf r had auto s3 still would be the winner.

The only benefit to manual is that you get to play with more pedals and another lever. That is it. There are no practical benefits. If you want engagement, get paddles - it will shift faster and you can revert to auto at any time. Manual transmission is going the way of manual starter and so it should. And in a few years the gearbox itself is going away too with electric cars not needing any.

1st gear full throtle in red zone and left cluch... Its 4motion... You will fell real acceleration... With start on 3000-4000rpm on manual transmision you just suffocate engine... 1st reson your turbo lost max pressure before 3000rpm... Your engine on 3000-4000rpm have 180-220 hp, not 310... So next time with manual and awd full power, tc off, fun started...

It always bothered me that when doing a drag race, a manual Golf R is always selected. The point of the race is to WIN! No one is buying a manual to win drag races these days. My comment is in regards to the hot hatch drag race test.

It common sense at this point quick auto are fater , they shift faster the programming choses when to shift better than you when it comes to getting off the line and they can have more gears for quicker ratios

Matt when you are asked wether to choose manual or auto. Make your mind up and then stick with it. Your reply in this video didn’t tell me anything new about the car or yourself.

Those auto audis with launch control as fast as all hell. It's just unfair to test manuals against automatic these days, the automatics are just too good.

It’s all part of the plan. Some tuna green might bring up VW. Besides once you go to a turbo car auto trans computer control keeps that boost in sweet spot.

The auto is the better drive for comfort and for speed. The manual is the more fun to drive if you are into it... Aren't we driving cars to have fun anymore? Especially GTI/RS/R versions?

For those who say the Audi is just a better car, remember that the manual in the VW means your changing gears almost a second slower than the automatic dual clutch in the Audi. It would’ve been a better comparison to have the golf R in the dual clutch automatic variant as well.
