Vw Mk3 Jetta rear disc brake conversion

Hang out while I mess with the mk3! I’m removing the old rear drum brakes and swapping in some rear discs! Need more whoa for all the extra go I have installed on the vr6/vrt!

My brother had a 96 Jetta & his rear brakes were seized, and all we did was took out the entire rear axle with the drums & replace it with on with the discs rotors in it.

That’s also an option, however I didn’t have an extra beam so this is the route I went with. The way I did it would have been far less work than swapping the entire beam anyway since I literally replaced everything down to the bearings with new and rebuilt parts. The only used/untouched part I installed was the stub axles.

@@vr2jetta Swapping the entire beam is super easy! The added benefit of getting the integral sway bar with the higher model beam is a welcome handling bonus. I've done many of these conversions and the beam is the faster and ideal way.

Thanks, but that car is long gone, I’m working on a mk2 now. That wheels were 16x7 if I remember correctly. They were cheap xxr’s but they did look nice and did the job. They came with the car but can be found cheap on eBay.

You totally glossed over repacking the bearings into the new disc. Wouldve liked to see that in detail.

where did you get the brake hardlines!! please let me know if you see this ive been searching and cannot find them anywhere!!!! great video though!

I got them from the donor car. It was a 95 Passat. The brake line setup was very similar. Anything with rear disc in that era should work fine. Thanks for the support!

Para empezar el apriete de la tuerca debe ser a tope y luego aflojar para dejar libre los baleros hay empezaste a contaminar los discos con tus guantes con graza y el trapo lleno de graza luego el tapón lo debiste golear en la seja para no doblarlo

Just curious do you remember what kind of bolts the caliper bracket used? Im trying to take mine off and they are all rusted out. trying to find replacements but Im they look to be either torx or like an allen key?

I think they are Allen head bolts. If you get them out I’m sure you can find new ones at ace hardware.

Unfortunately there is no kit for this conversion. I used parts that I sourced from a donor car, and some parts that I found online. Mostly eBay parts with quality brake pads. Good luck

So I'm just curious what do you benefit by swappin rear beams ive got a 97 golf gti n a 97 jetta gls my jetta has reg drum brakes still I wanna put rear disc on my jetta somebody told me a mk3 golf rear beam is lil narrower??I havent measured anything yet just want some feedback plz let me know thanks....

All mk3 beams are the same I believe. It’s not cost effective for the manufacturer to develop and make a bunch of different beams. The mk2 and mk3 beams are different, but those are different body styles. They do interchange though, I pulled this beam and put it in my mk2. I have to modify the brake lines but it all pretty much bolts up.

The width shouldn't be much different between the Golf and Jetta. The cars with rear disc have a swaybar built into the beam. Make sure to use a non-ABS beam on a non-ABS car, it has the bracket for the proportioning valve and correct hardlines. The ABS beams do not have the stuff for the prop valve on it.

@@vaisanentommi7037 no, it’s on the correct side, otherwise the parking brake cable would not connect properly. Maybe it’s different in the country you are in?

@@vr2jetta it doesnt matter in wich country you are. Your brake discs are on wrong sides,look at the wanes.

@@vaisanentommi7037 OH! I see what you are saying. I misunderstood. I see them in both directions on numerous cars. I installed them in the direction the disc manufacturer specified.
