This week, I start out working on the CIS fuel injection system issues on the 83 GTI, and try to get that car running for my friend Anthony, and after that, I move on to the 75 rabbit and install the rear disc brake conversion. Plenty of work getting done, and lots more to do!!!

Doing a rear disc conversion on the 92 Gti I just picked up because someone reused a cotter pin. Luckily I caught it before I lost the wheel but still wrecked the spindle and backing plate but was able to limp it the last 300 miles to get out home. Just wish I would have filmed the trip! Still enjoying the videos keep them coming!

I've never had any problem with the rear drums on any of my VWs. I understand the desire, but the need is nonexistent.
@ThrottleGrotto
@ThrottleGrotto 3 жыл бұрын
it's true.. rear drums are adequate. Especially the 200mm ones from a pickup or a mk3. The discs are easier to work on and get parts for.

@@ThrottleGrotto I suppose if I were driving aggessively rear discs would be better. I have a 79 scirocco and an 83 audi coupe gt that both have rear drums. The audi is a bit bigger car but still only weighs 2300lbs. My daily driver subaru outback weighs 3600lbs !!! I like light weight cars.

Great videos, thanks for making a rear drum to disc swap! I plan to do the same. Question: can you elaborate on the brake proportioning valves? The two separate ones you held up don’t look anything like an Mk3 OEM proportioning valve.
@ThrottleGrotto
@ThrottleGrotto 4 жыл бұрын
The brake proportioning valves are (as I understand) flow restrictors. These are from the mk2 scirocco or late cabriolet. The mk2 and mk3 cars had a valve on the rear axle that was position dependent.

Throttle Grotto thanks for the additional info. So if I’m pulling all the braking system parts from a salvage yard, I should include the MK3 proportioning valve as well and the remount it similarly to the rear axle?
@ThrottleGrotto
@ThrottleGrotto 4 жыл бұрын
@@quinnthompsontv if you have the skills to make that work, then sure! you could also use a manual twist-style proportioning valve (like a wilwood) and plumb it in somewhere. I'd say that would be the easier option. Not 'factory' but long term more reliable.

Hello , Thank you for the video, question, could you show a video when you added the proportion valve on the master cylinder. the part number will be useful for me , since I have done the conversion, But I have not added the proportion valve that you had mention.thanks. VW 88 cabriolet
@ThrottleGrotto

The part number for the VW thread-in proportioning valve is 533 612 151. hope this helps your search!

What cable are you using now for the the hand brake cable?
@ThrottleGrotto
@ThrottleGrotto 6 жыл бұрын
I am going to use the cables from a 1987 16v scirocco. I could also use golf mk2 rear disc cables, I think they're just a bit longer.

I have most of the parts for this now, but I thought I saw something about it changing the track width and now I can't find it
@ThrottleGrotto
@ThrottleGrotto 4 жыл бұрын
If it changes the width, it's not very much. I should have measured that prior to doing it, but unless you're really close on wheel fitment, it shouldn't be an issue.

I found my stub axle on there is like sitting on the cutout on the beam if that makes any sense, do I shave it down or do I sound crazy
@ThrottleGrotto
@ThrottleGrotto 2 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't need to trim the beam. Looks Ike you would need to, but it all fits fine

What are the proportioning valves off of or are they aftermarket?
@ThrottleGrotto
@ThrottleGrotto 5 жыл бұрын
They are the factory 16v scirocco or cabriolet (with 10" brakes) proportioning valves
@gregmcgee529
@gregmcgee529 4 жыл бұрын
Those look a whole lot like the residual pressure valves used on later rear drum cars like Cabriolets. Proportioning valves are found near rear axle as a rule. Residual pressure valves go on the master... At least that's where VW put them. They should have a part number on them... look it up. Its possible they are 2 psi, which is OK... Discs dont technically need residual pressure valves, although 2psi units exist for them, can improve pedal feel. Drums get them as it prevents the wheel cylinder seals from deflating. well shot video otherwise.

they're not integral to the operation of the brakes, but they do help assist debris out of the rotors and calipers.

Is disc brake from golf mk2?
@ThrottleGrotto
@ThrottleGrotto 5 жыл бұрын
In the USA, we had a few vehicles with 10" front brakes. The 88 scirocco 16v, the later 90-92 cabriolet, and the 85-87 audi 4000 quattro all had the proper carrier to bolt to the mk1 steering knuckle.
