The cam pulleys are not round, they wobble similar to a triangle. That's why it's important to do the tensioner adjustment procedure, the tensioner needs to be in the middle of the travel because it oscillates on either side of center due to the pulleys wobbling. The problem is the tension adjustment is on one side of the pulleys, adjusting it pulls the belt tight on that side leaving some slack on the other side and little timing error. Best to adjust the tensioner with the cam pulleys loose so the belt can tension on both sides - but also ensure the cam pulleys end up correctly aligned. Turning the engine over twice and rechecking everything is vital.

I had the same issue and concluded that the important settings were the crank tool being against the crankshaft and both camshafts being held by the tool with the screw in it. I took the view that the pulley locking tool was not too important for it to align up. I also read somewhere that the camshaft pulleys were oval shape to pick up slack on the belt during rotation, hence the need for them to be at a set position. So I guess, almost at the right position is good enough.

Belt is stretched lock the crank and slip the tool in the back take the belt off you have to change the cam sprocket bolts if you slacken them good job👍

Nice one Matt. I think volkswagen have become one of the most over complicated belts to change now. Also you have to watch certain brands of locking tools as they don't fit correctly. I've had this problem and it really confused me and now I'd rather refuse a job then not have a good brand.

Good video we have laser tool I like to mark all sprockets too on the 1.5tsi I have to use a washer on the crank pin otherwise the cam tool don’t fit lol

Great job. I have the mk6 1.4 tsi 2009 manual. Only 34k on clock. Not been serviced for 3 years as I do very few miles 3k p.a. Want to service the car now. Do I need the timing chain replaced as well and how much does it cost?

I use tipex for these and tdi engines with no timing tools I reckon I’ve done over 100 and never had any issues the electronic timing tool you talked about isn’t actually for setting timing it’s for adjusting valve overlap and scavenging ever so slightly to keep the engine running within its emission tolerances there just a tool to scare mechanics away I’ve done the tsi engines with timing chains aswell and never had bother onced

Hi matt i am Winston from South Africa i have the same vehicle.Last week monday my vehicle made a strange noise when i was busy driving and i stopped immediately and it wont start from there i tried jumping it and puah starting but it wont start.There was an error message "power supply:workshop" i took it to a mechanic now he says its the timming belt it btoke 7 nipples as he says what is the worse case scenario then the nipples of the timming belt are broken and a car wont start.

This timming belt dont change! Control after 250000 Kilometers every 30000. This its kevlar belt

As far as I know the marks on the pulleys at the front of the engine aren't meant to line up, not 100% sure on that though!
