You need to "stress" relieve the bumper bracket while you have tension on it. Smack the outer piece of it with a 5lb. hand sledge, that way the bumper will stay in the extended position. if you overpull when not relieving the tension, you WILL rip the rest of the body apart. 46 years of doing professional body and frame repairs, taught me a lot.

I had a ‘74 super beetle, metallic green, this brought back memories. I also had an accident in reverse with it !, hitting a low stone wall in reverse in the dark. Fortunately not too dented, but the bodywork touching the exhaust sounded terrible, was ok after repairing. They are much stronger vehicles than anything modern now….

I worked at a VW dealer back in '82, they had just hired a new body man with allegedly 10 years experience working on bugs. The manager gave him a '73 Super that needed the right side fender bumped out, he proceeded to drill holes in it, and used a screw type slide hammer to pull the dents out, we all just stared at him, no one said anything except the boss. The boss told him "when you're done" collect your pay (early) then go find another job, because you lied on your application. You NEVER need to drill holes in a bug fender to pull dents! If I did a bug where I couldn't hammer and dolly a fender back into shape, I would take the fender off and fix it.

I always liked the Super Beetle. In 1973 in my junior year in college, a friend bought a brand new beige Super Beetle. I think it had brown leatherette interior. Nice little car. Cases of beer fit in the larger trunk very easily!

Back when I collected, I specialized in 71-72 Supers. (Didn't dig the 73 and up windshield/dash) Check it for death wobble by accelerating over a train track. Replace the control arm bushings with urethane and convert front brakes to disc (Ghia style). You'll be amazed how those things handle.

Holy cow! I talked to him at our last show about this. I told him Herbie has a tendency to roll away from us sometimes too. Sometimes the e brake holds just enough to make you think it's on then you walk away and its rolling. Yikes

I had a '73 Super Beetle in 1993. I found it in a pasture. Cut a small tree out of it that had grown through the pan and out the right window. I worked nights at the time and would spend 4 hours a morning working on it. It took 3 months but it was perfect. I drove it six weeks and hit a damn deer one night on the way to work. I was sick, pissed off, and disgusted for months. lol Bought another one in 1994. It was in good shape, but needed an engine. Put the engine from the 1st '73 SB in it. Drove it a year and sold it for twice as much as I had in it. Bought a '70 Squareback. Someone had put a later model fuel injected engine in it. Fuel injection never worked right. Scrapped the FI and put dual carbs on it after rebuilding the engine and it ran like a top!

Marathon blue was first used on the 1972 Champion(or is it Champaign Edition) Editions but had become a standard model range color for the 1303 for the 1973 model year in Europe. Not so however for North America where the Sports Bug was the only model imported in this color that year.

That is not to bad, the car is still driveable, you will have to change the fender, bumper, muffler fix the decklid rear apron for sure

Man, I love that bug. That's one of the nicest Super Bugs I've seen in a long time. Takes me back to the 70's when my step mom owned an orange '73 and I was just a young pup myself. Amazing job pulling that damage out! I can't believe how close to original shape that bumper is now! Sweet ride!!

I had a 74 super which I named the beater beetle the car was as well from the south California I believe but had rolled over once in ya life and banged dented all over. But was my winter beater and did well. The guy I bought it off added a little something to the engine that I thought was neat on the alternator pulley he added a rope start pulley that’s right you could wrap a rope around it and pull start the engine if needed. I believe it had at one time starter issues and he added the pull start and it actually worked 😁👍👍👍👍👍

I had forgotten all about those blue bugs; they were cool looking when they came out almost 50 years ago; crap, I was only 13; I remember seeing a bunch of the 'Things" around the same time.

My dad bought a new 73 Super Beetle with AC. 0 to 60....Tuesday

Your story reminds me of an incident that happened with my '77 Colt which was a standard. I had just finished at work and it was dark. It was Winter and the parking lot was ice. The wheels were spinning. I left the clutch engaged in first and with the wheels spinning, I pushed. The car started to move but I slipped and fell. The car started towards the metal fence that encircled the complex where I worked. Fortunately, there was a metal pipe that stopped the Colt in the parking lot else it would have continued towards the fence.

Poor car sounds a little worse for wear but it can be brought back. Maybe the impact did something to the exhaust system. It’s worth it; it’s a nice one.

I bought my first new car which was a 1973 sports beetle in bright yellow with black interior…it was a super beetle body with blacked out bumpers and headlight bezels…no chrome ..it was bone stock for only $200 more than base super beetle with no a c or radio…the package included: deep dish 916 painted steel wheels with really nice wide pirelli sport tires, anti sway bars front and rear, pirelli seats, a fat black steering wheel with Allen screw face. The total price came to a whopping $2,600….I had to beg my dad to let me spend the extra $200 for the car I wanted and had to pay for…he was a good dad and agreed…perhaps because he could see I wasn’t leaving without it… I loved that car, and passed it down to cousins…I bet it’s still in the family somewhere…there wasn’t a rattle or squeak in it last time I rode in it after it was over 20 years old…doors still closed solidly like it was new… Wish I still had it, even though they don’t make those beautiful tires anymore…very unique tread pattern which set off the whole car…

I dont know why but pulling out dents like that has this certain type of rush to it. Been there done that. Plus side is he doesnt need the tail light lens!

Not sure where you are with this repair now, but the next step would be to get a replacement fender and then pull the body till that fits correctly. You will likely need to pull the engine to do some straightening from inside as well. At that point you can get a new bumper and bracket to top it off. Should be nice when done but will take time.

I like it! I've always been a fan of the later volleyball tail lights. I had a 72 Super Beetle and daily drove it for a while when I was 18-19 if I remember correctly. Wouldn't mind having another but I'd really like to have a hard top Ghia. There just aren't any to pick from where i'm at. This 73 seems to be a real good car. Just need to get the car apart fix that leak, hammer that sheet metal back out and give her a little paint and she'll be good to go.

When it's all repaired I'm sure Larry will be happy as Larry.... 😂

Towing on a serious note with the engine weight hanging out back of the car and back of the trailer, you could find your trailer fish tailing when at speed. there’s some interesting vids of a British uni studying how trailers/caravans behave depending on load location and it can go fast very quickly. Well done saving an 03, do love an 03 🤙🏻 superior suspension up front.

I am surprised that the rear lens did not crack or break, which is great it preserves the originality of the car, what has me thinking that bumper, is gone unless somebody can straighten it out even more, it would even be more interesting if it retained the original bumper

I backed a 63 Beetle into a 58 Corvette. The paint on the vette wasn't even smudged. The deck lid of the VW cradled the front bumper of the corvette. I thought the owner was going to kill me when he heard the collision and bolted out of his house. That bug was looking out for me and absorbed my youthful stupidity with a crumpled lid!

How on earth did the rear light survive that impact ! Looks a really nice car, Shame someone's changed its colour thou.

I believe I have a 1974 VW Super Beetle, painted in Marathon Blue. Someone repainted to car years ago (poor job) and the paint has since started to flake. The inner door jams, trunk, etc still has the Blue. I'll have to confirm via the paint code, but I may have one!

Nice find !Ok, it's not it's original color but I prefer that silver grey ! As for pulling back that bumper, go at it again using, say a 2by 4" on the right side, to counter push your pull. The engines sounds like running on 3 cylinders, is it ? PS I'm jealous !!🤩

Read the comments. Some folks are never happy. I found a yellow one very similar. Seats, steering wheel and rims missing. The car had a complete respray in Texas Yellow. I could read the original saturngelb L13 M somewhat. During the restoration all sorts of original colour was found. While I prefer the Texas Yellow I did it original. The vin is in the relm and there was a build sheet in the glove box. I believe only Sports Bugs came in those colours.

The trunk area should have the orig paint code sticker or pull the wiper cover plate and see... and if you do paint it the Marathon color please use some brand other than PPG some reason that brand doesn't put the correct shade of blue down. Thought I'd lost my mind in the 80's when I painted one then saw other builds with the same issue- all PPG. Great find!

I used to have a yellow '71 super beetle,sold it to a neighbor, now I have a '67 beetle.

I'm going to have to investigate this one. Would be awesome if it's a Sports Bug!
