Great video, but if you see my current project, you will see, that those problems at the T2 bus, you show in your video, are not the real problems. For example the sill below the sliding door is rusted from the inside. If you open it, you will see that the whole carrier ist gone, mostly. The only way to judge the quality of such an old bus, is to use an endoskope camera. All other thing, can be done easily. Kind regards Ralph.

Hi Ralph, and thanks for your interest and advice, yeah those cameras are a great tool to have in your arsenal, unfortunately I don’t have one yet, and I agree with you that most panels tend to rust from the inside out. Best wishes with yours buddy 🤙

The thing about asking for 10 mins alone - I’d always have done that, and always allowed it but recently have heard of someone doing that to two seemingly very keen buyers who brought tools “to be able to have a good look at everything” on a T5 Camper. They seemed super interested, took their time to look everywhere but then didn’t even talk about buying and headed off. The seller was confused, felt in her gut there must’ve been a scam but couldn’t figure it out. Went out the next morning to find oil in the coolant and when the recovery man came he said he’d seen it before, they ask for time on their own, add oil to the coolant and wait for it to reappear for sale at a lower price for spares/repairs 😭 So given my bus is both my lifeline and my pride & joy - anyone coming to see it can look wherever they want but I’ll be glued to their side as they do it.

Thats a great in depth look into the body love the Type 2 bay window but in the UK prices are so high and you need to go in with your eyes wide open I'd so love one but the T3 T25 Vanagon seems the more worthwhile purchase for me as im slowly looking for one

@@Joesrustbuckets it's eventually going to have to be a Type 2 bay window maybe they've dropped off a bit due to stay cations holidays during the pandemic and a lot of campers Type 2 T3's etc were purchased as an impulse buy without looking into the gremlins of rust and rot and from time to time they're going to cough and spluttert maybe a set of points and condenser or a coil and people now are selling them on as they want the package holiday again

Great video. A generally better buy is one from a dry state/country (if you don't mind LHD), they are generally pretty good, like your one. All my classic Vdubs (apart from one) were US dry state, or Swedish imports and they are night and day better than most UK RHD stuff, so definitely a better start.

Thanks for this. I was just given a 1990 Brazilian T2 kombi abandoned in a container, and I am trying to decide of I will keep it and restore it. appears to be in good shape, at least way better shape than this one. I worked in a body shop as a teenager for a while, but know nothing about the particular quirks of the VW kombi (I am more of an off-road Toyota person). They seem to be quite a different animal, but I find it encouraging how fanatical the Kombi fans are about them.

Yea, I am going to get it home in the next two weeks and make a final decision. Needed a new battery, tires, and keys, after sitting for about 5 years; and, it is 1000 km from my house. I have a car carrier that will pick it up. My tenative plan is going to be to store it for now, due to it needing a new title. That will give me a chance to get to know it better, get maintenance done on it, make a restoration plan. After that, I am either going to restore it myself or find a Kombi fanatic to sell it to. I have two other vehicle projects in front of it, including a Toyota hilux pickup that was in the same container. I have just sufficient understanding of the Kombi and cars to appreciate what it is though, and will make sure it gets a good home. In the meantime, I going to dive in to your videos and learn everything I can to figure out if I want to tahe on the project myself.

Hi, first of all, great video! I have a question, there is a guy in my neighbourhood selling a 1968 type A T2 with a chassis and motor that run perfectly. The price is decent (around 8k). the only thing that is really rusted to the core is the gutter piece. I happen to know someone who sells repairpieces for the T2 gutter. Would you know how hard it is to make the repair when the gutterpiece is already pre-shaped?

@@Joesrustbuckets thx for the tip, luckily I watched this video before I checked the van out ;) Would it matter if the van has a polyester roof (high roof)? I also didn't see much rust underneath the gutter, it was only the gutter itself that was as good as gone would this matter for the difficulty of the reparation?

I have a 68 (made in 67) and a 79 (made in 78) and there are huge differences between the last and first production of the bay window. I have restored both, and the 68 is much easier to work on, it has a lot less going on. The main places are going to be the windows, lower nose, dog legs, inner dog legs, and gutters. If you see any rot under the windows be careful, and look out for bondo! You also want to avoid a bus that has been "patched" up by amateurs. If you have a real restoration that is different.
@bm7760

Could you please outline some of the differences?
@SkaterStimm
@SkaterStimm Жыл бұрын
@@bm7760 The nose is different (you can clearly see it since the indicators are in different places and the bumper style is different). What the gas tank door looks like and placement of it. Doors are different. My 68 doesn't have push locks and has different door knobs. Most of the sheet metal has been reinforced on later models or it has added beads to make it stronger.

I’ve always use a wet towel, might start using the air line myself much better way. Love the amount of effort you put into each patch, I’ve normally only done that on the outer bodywork.
