I used to be very consistent... then I changed job location. =( But I'm learning more at the new location... working on stuff that I've never done before.

Thanks Thomas, your videos helped me a lot throughout the years. What temperatures are we looking for? Typically what's the max temp we should see on the radiator, and at what temp should the thermostat open and let coolant flow to the radiator? Cheers

All depends on the rating of the thermostat and the radiator fan switch rating. Thermostats are usually around 87c and fan switch activation is usually around 95c & 101c. Both the thermostat and fan switch should be stamped with their ratings. When testing... thermostats "start" to open at their rating, so don't expect it to be wide open at 87c if it is an 87c thermostat. Temp needle should not go further than 1/2 way (where the LED is)... if it does, you need to check why. Keep in mind that voltage to the gauge as well as the gauge itself can be an issue. Don't trust the gauge alone... take temperature readings in the engine bay at various locations and readings along the pipes going to the front (as well as the radiator)... so you can check for hot / cold spots.

@Thomas EXOVCDS hey, happy new year. My 1997 vw jetta map light, reading lights front and rear, trunk lights, power locks, power roof, and my mileage, digital clock display doesn't stay on anymore. They all stopped working all the same time. My mileage and digital clock don't work with ignition on. Checked fuse and battery terminals. Any ideas possibly bad ground or something got wet

Probably two separate issue... bad cat (if it is rattling inside) and exhaust manifold gasket if you hear exhaust at the manifold.
Radiator fan won't stop running!! VW Vanagon.
