Nice and clear diagnosis. It's amazing those ECU's still work after all this time. I must admit I have a couple in the stash but as I went for an aftermarket ECU I should probably sell them will all the other parts.

So the fuel was bleeding into cylinders continuously when key was on, and the fuel pump couldn't keep up. Or did computer cut out the fuel pump when it recognized the injectors were constantly on? Good thing it didn't hydrolock.
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS Жыл бұрын
Fuel pump cycles once when key is on. Pressure bled off because pump stopped running. During cranking, pump runs, but can't build pressure because injectors are all open. Not enough flow to hydrolock... fuel just pumps through the cylinders into the exhaust when the engine is cranking. Thank you for watching.

Hi. I have crank no start on my new to me ‘91 westy. I put a length of fuel line on the t junction and no fuel came out while cranking. Am I right in suspecting I need to replace the fuel pump? Thanks and love your videos.
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS Жыл бұрын
Yes, possibly. Use a test light to verify power at the fuel pump relay "feed" and at the fuel pump relay "outlet" to make sure the relay is OK. Then, check for power at the pump (while someone is cranking the engine with the key). If power is present, but the pump doesn't buzz, replace the pump. At the back of the alternator are 2 red wires mounted to the alternator by a 13mm nut. Make sure that both wires are ok. The smaller one of the two feeds the relays... when broken, the engine won't start.

Hey Thomas I've got a 01 Jetta 1.8t 5 speed. I believe the clutch went out on me. But I'm concerned because should I still be able to start the car in gear to move it around? I've done that with other vehicles with bad clutches but this one I can't. The pedal still feels normal. And don't hear any noise in the clutch. The trans shifts through all gears. I even trying starting the car in second gear to move it but it won't engage at all. Is the clutch just completely broken?
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS Жыл бұрын
If the clutch is completely fried, it won't move / put power to the wheels. Also check your axle shafts. A broken cv also won't allow power to the wheels.

Hi again buddy, p0261 p0264 p0267 p0270 p0445 p0037 p0418 p0414 p0141 all these codes have popped up on the reader on my a4 1.8t, if I erase codes the car will start but it still doesn't help me with the underlying issue, is there anything you can recommend, many thanks
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS Жыл бұрын
If the engine runs, then there's no power supply issue to the injectors & other sensors. So I don't know why those codes are being flagged. A fuel pump relay that intermittently doesn't supply power to those components or doesn't supply power as quickly as the ECM expects, could cause those codes to be set.
@lukestreet4514
@lukestreet4514 Жыл бұрын
@@EXOVCDSthankyou for your reply its much appreciated, i have already replaced fuel pump relay the other week due to no start issues and was running great for a month and now started to no start with all the codes, its becoming rather annoying now haha

@@lukestreet4514 you said it was running when you clear the codes. If it isn't, then you have to check power to the fuel pump relay and power getting from the relay to those components. New relays can go bad.

I looked in the attached diagram for something that I'd noticed relating to injector power (not the signal) on the 1986 Automatic 2.1 - that is the wire that runs from the alternator to the harness along the engine comparment firewall and to one of the engine compartment control boxes I can't recall which. It was a 10 guage very finely stranded wire and on my otherwise reasonly well preserved GL that wire had totally deteriorated, even the silver plated copper wire - it looked as if it has been stressed electrically. I write all this because I was going to ask you about it - as to theories of why that would accur. Hope I'm recalling correctly but I just replaced the original finely stranded silver coated copper wire with the best one I could find and I think I increased it to 8 guage if the original was 10 gauge. You probably have this VW Factory wiring diagram but here it is for your readers: (there are many differences btwn models) www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/1985_86_wiring_vanagon/1985_86_Vanagon_Wiring_Diagrams.pdf
