Painting Faded Bumper With Rubber Paint - Volkswagen T4 Transporter.
After trying to restore the bumper using plastic dye, back to black, boot polish, and even a heat gun, I can only say the results were disappointing and did not last very long. I even tried the peanut butter method.
The heat gun method may work on bumpers that are only a few years old, but on a van that is almost twenty years old it does not work very well at all, I think it has actually made it worse.

Thank you Nice video. The two top torx screws are hard to get at because the bumper is a complete sub assembly consisting of the bumper, two polystyrene inserts and the bumper bar. The bumper bar has two arms that bolt to the chassis under the back of the van. If anyone has trouble with these remove the bolts and pull the assembly out of the chassis after you have disconnected the bumper sides from the body. Worth doing to check the condition of the bar as mine was completely rotted out and finding a replacement is getting more difficult.

Today i tried to go work in the morning but my vw t4 98 2.4 wont start, it tries to start but wont fire up, do you have any tips what it could be, i tried to do research but it could be anything solenoids fuel pumps etc?

I had to drill two holes in the door trip to get the two top screws it was so tight.. Still to paint the bumper and try get it back on.. Oh yes two screws snapped two had to be drilled managed to find replacements on the net..

It is really durable, only problem is trying to touch it up if it gets a scrape, one of he neighbourhood kids hit the front bumper with a bmx tyre, rubber on rubber will pull it away from the bumper, apart from that it still looks good.

8:34 - an angle grinder with a knotted wire cup brush would have made short work of that rusty patch. I would have done that first before the rust converter. Also a primer coat? Looks nice, well done!

It would have helped. I have some wire brush drill attachments now so jobs like that are a bit easier and less time consuming.

Two cans per bumper with give a decent enough coating.

Thanks, I did the front bumper last year and it still looks good, only a couple of small marks from moving the radiator into the service position.

No. If you want to do a proper job you need to. Removing the bumper is a 15 minute job if none of the fixings are seized.

Nice job, but just blasting it gently from afar with a black and decker paint stripper/heat gun brings them up perfectly...

Tried that. You can see from the start of the video that the bumper was way beyond being brought back with a heat gun. If anything it made it worse. Some bumpers are just too far gone.

For faded bumpers, end caps and plastic work in general that is PVC injection moulded and naturally black the best tip is to use a hot air gun and evenly heat it to bring the oils to the surface. Best second hand car sales hack of all time. Rubber paint and all the crap that was invented in the 70s is awful

This bumper was too far gone (as stated in the description) for a heat gun to bring the black back, I still gave it a go as it has worked on other vehicles in the past. What would you suggest as a long term solution for less than £20?
