I thought these were only sold by street vendors in developing countries or the former "2nd world" countries where it's really easy to con gullible (and inexperienced) consumers into buying them. In developed countries there can't be that many "suckers" that reason "camcorders are camcorders" can there?

'12MP interpolated' isn't fake, though very misleading(it used to be very common to do this), interpolated basically just means it's being scaled/stretched to a higher resolution, which presumably it does actually do. Utterly pointless, but technically correct. At least it doesn't look like the digital zoom is just scaling up the centre of the picture, albeit only because it records in low resolution so it can just crop a smaller portion of the sensor, to zoom in. The microphone looks like it might be adjustable for the direction it points, I don't know what the point would be though.

When the microphone is in place, is the sound quality any better? Anyway, it's not a bad camera. (but I still say that the video quality is similar to a Nokia 6300).

I remember in the mid 2000s over here in .au there were some TV stations that marketed themselve as being HD even though it was just a PAL signal broadcast in progressive scan. It was thoroughly ridiculous but our 'definitions' here based everything above 576i as some form of HD. Some channels remained so for many years too. So that super high VGA signal is of much higher definition than 480p, depending on your standards definitions; or definitions of your standards.

If it's cheap enough, something like that is nice for a weather balloon trip to space or something. It works, it weighs little and is worth less. As long as it works for a couple of weeks while getting something like that together, it's still something worth having for disposable situations.

Reminds me of this POS $10 Vivitar camcorder I had one time. Boy was that thing a steaming pile! This is HD compared to that excuse for a video camera. It had it all, from the 3-inch fake lens with a pin-hole in the middle, to an LCD smaller than a postage stamp, to the 8X "zoom" which would make video look like it was made of 4 pixels. Only thing it didn't have is a fake DVD reader. That camera, and the cheap camera that came with my quadcopter are the only things I can think of that top this out.

The external microphone looks likes a Sony mic I have for my vintage Sony camcorders, when I first got it, it sat backwards, after dorking with it, I found that the base actually swivels, the hot shoe on the Sony sits up front close to the lens, I believe it was designed to stay mounted to the camera and when not in use, you were able to swing it backwards and place it in the camera bag....might apply, a little force to see if yours may rotate as well?

+Ryan Scherbluk According to Google youtube uses a massive 35-45 mbps bitrate for 4k content, 30fps.. Up to 68 for 60fps content. I believe it. Loading a video at first maxes out my 50 - 60mbps connection and then every few seconds after that. Edit: Just wanted to add in. For anyone stuck with crappy internet becuase that's the only option available, i feel your pain. I'm in Canada and we have a ton of US clients, the poor business internet they get in some places is a nightmare and totally unacceptable. I hope Google changes it for everyone in the States. I had the same issue at my last home, had to move to a new city to get my fiber line.
@uxwbill

I'm shocked that you kept the "cameracorder" around! I'd have figured it met up with a microphone stand, golf club, car, bench vise or thrift store long ago... For 4:3 standard definition video, the output doesn't look too terrible. And the audio is arguably better (if still lacking high end) compared to the good old Panasonic Lumix. In fact it reminds me a lot of older digital still cameras with video modes. I'll go on record as the dissenting opinion -- for things that would be hazardous to a "real" camcorder or as a basis to build into something else, maybe something to give to a child...this thing's brilliant as long as one realizes what it is and doesn't pay too much for it. I'm surprised they went to the trouble of putting metal contact fingers on the fake SD card. Did you happen to plug it into something and see if it did anything?

+uxwbill This video is actually a few years old, I finally just got around to editing it. I gave away the 35mm/audio cassette "camcorder", but I still have this Mitsuba. The audio sampling rate is the same as your Lumix (8 kHz) but the Lumix definitely had less distortion and background noise. The fake SD card is empty inside -- just a plastic shell.

I used to have one of those fake camcorders (mine was a DXG) when they used to be common in low-end department stores like Kohl's and TJMaxx. The one annoying thing about those camcorders is that for some reason, the video was recorded in the .MOV (QuickTime) format, which made it impossible to edit on Windows Movie Maker without converting the video to a compatible format.

It's funny how they put the fake DVD compartment in just for looks, but it's like the fake counterweight adjustment on a cheap turntable; All it does is make the whole thing look stupid and cheap. That's a cool battery adapter! I would love one of those to use in a pinch for a camera that doesn't use AA batteries. Have you tried out the 35mm camera in that other Mitsuba? I forget which, but probably AVI.

Reminds me of MJPEG. Could be using an AVI container though. I once had a camera of similar quality that was made back around 2003. It used MJPEG. It worked, but the quality sucked, about like this camera.

when was this released? I'm guessing 2008 by the quality and even low end for that era. So by what that fake sd card says this camcorder won't accept anything bigger than a 32mb sd card?

I was using a 1 GB SD card and it worked fine.

The framerate is really good though REALLY stable unlike modern cameras that stutter like a 25fps movie even though they "say" that they're 60fps

What camera did you use to shoot most of the video? The 4:3 aspect ratio could mean some mini-DV camcorder.
@vwestlife

It was a Sony DCR-TRV140 Digital8 camcorder. It can also record 16:9 widescreen video, but I chose 4:3 to keep it consistent with the Mitsuba camcorder.

I started laughing out loud when you showed the fake DVD drive. Why do they go through the effort to imitate a camcorder from 10 years ago? I did a quick check on Amazon and eBay and I don't even see for sale for really cheap. I think I will stay with my Canon ELPH.
