I have acute myeloid leukemia also called AML and thyroid disease from exposure to radiation and chemicals. I have not worked around either of these hazards. My only exposure I believe occurred while living as a youngster in the San Fernando Valley.
I was in the hospital 5 times last year and 1 time so far this year. I have had 20 transfusions. I have had 7 rounds of chemo that have made me very ill. I think the medical bills last year were greater than $500,000 and this year may be even higher. I do have Kaiser so much of that has been covered.
For those who donate blood, thank you. I have had 20 units of blood so far. Just last week I had to have another unit because my HGB was below the threshold value of 7.2 with RBC, WBC and ANC also being dangerously low again. My blood is tested twice a week. Blood is drawn from a PICC line in my right arm.
What happened at the Santa Susana Field Lab?
LA's Nuclear Secret | From KNBC in Los Angeles:
"During its history, there were several nuclear accidents at the Santa Susana Field Lab. Some experts believe the 1959 partial meltdown at SSFL could be the worst nuclear disaster in U.S. history, surpassing the radiation released during the Three Mile Island accident.
What caused the nuclear accident at the Santa Susana Field Lab in 1959?
Poor environmental and safety practices resulted in radioactive fires at the hot lab and at least four of the reactors suffered significant accidents, including the 1959 partial nuclear meltdown."
There was no containment building around the reactor. I knew of two boys in my neighbor who lived across the street from each other who died from cancer at about the same time after the meltdown.

If I can be one tenth of the elmer to my 10 grandchildren as you have to our community and all I've learned from you, I will feel I have contributed a lot to the hobby. Let me just say, I'm 78 and live in northern NV. I've got AML as well. I started fighting six years ago. NEVER GIVE UP! I've been put in remission three times. I've had two stem cell transplants. I'm almost two years into my second transplant, and am doing fine (as fine as I can expect after all the stuff I've been through anyway). We did all this at MD Anderson in Houston and Medicare and our secondary covered EVERY bit of it. There are options. Every nurse along the way said, "NEVER GIVE UP!". I never did and never will. You are the epitome of a class act. Not only those qualities, but you go out of your way to teach and help everyone in this community. I am so sorry to hear this news Jim. I have always enjoyed your videos and your contributions to Amateur Radio. Back in the 1980s, I was a consultant to the California Dept. of Health when I worked at Livermore National Lab working with Dr. Ross Adey of Loma Linda Medical Center. We were asked to investigate the high incidence of childhood leukemias in McFarland caused by the Voice of America in Delano. We used antenna modeling to show that the beam was not towards McFarland and we surmised that it was the intense pesticides in that agricultural area. Keep strong and you are a valuable resource to the Amateur Radio community. 73 de Prof. Jim Breakall WA3FET

Jim, I became a radio amateur in 2018, and more or less since then, I followed your youtube videos, enjoyed them, and learned from them. A terrible accident happened in my life four years ago and changed it forever and not for the best. I learned from you also to move on and continue to do what I like and can still do, despite adversity. It's a hard thing to admit but there will be no miracles or any amount of prayers that will change the course of our lives. However while anyone of us must die, one day or another, very few have the privilege to leave a mark behind them. You will be one of those, Jim. Be proud of that.

According to one video there are over 500k people living within 10 miles of the place, children are STILL getting sick. From the trichloroethylene solvent they dumped, to the sodium reactor failure, to the open toxic burn pits they used to shoot at with a rifle to light on fire because they couldn't stand close enough (no kidding)... the place was an absolute DISASTER! There are some documentary style presentations on YT if you want the specifics. Jim, your videos have helped me out a lot over they years. I never had an in person Elmer. Jim, although I'm newer to radio, in my eyes, you are the standard of what it means to be an Elmer and what I strive to be as an operator. Someone else said that everyone will pass but few will leave a legacy. When I wasn't sure how to properly communicate and what "QSL" was all about, it was your videos I learned from. I will never not think of you and chuckle when I hear someone saying "QSL" every other word. Recently, I heard someone say "Hi Hi" on SSB. Immediately, I heard your voice saying "...just laugh". For me and many other operators who are newer, you will always pop into our minds in so many little moments like that. Gradually, those little moments will become a lifetime of radio which will have been guided and shaped by you. You are most certainly in that few who will leave a legacy. Even more few are those who will leave such a positive and constructive legacy as yours. Thank you so much for everything, Jim. 73 KJ5CNK

So sorry to hear about the health struggles Jim. I came across your videos while studying for the technician license found an interest in radio which is far from my day to day as a mechanical engineer. The amount of people you've helped to teach and inspire to pursue radio as a hobby or as a career is immeasurable, not to mention all the friendships formed on the air over the years. Your theory on the cause of your health issues makes me motivated to continue on my path in the industrial wastewater treatment industry designing systems to prevent pollution, and hopefully in turn preventing symptoms like you are experiencing. Your catalog of videos will undoubtedly continue to serve those new to hobby, and those like myself who are in the infant stages of the hobby but recognize the value and expertise put forth in your videos. We appreciate what you do, and what you have done more than you can know. We all look forward to any videos you may continue to post as health allows. Appreciate you sharing, Jim. As an avid reader and (over)studier of our nuclear history here in the United States, I’m very well aware of Santa Susana. Sadly, my own local facility which amongst other things, “lost” over seventy pounds of polonium, was the subject of a Grand Jury investigation in the early 90s. The Grand Jury worked for two years on the case and came to the conclusion that Rockwell should be charged with environmental crimes. Instead, the government settled with itself and the Grand Jury was threatened with imprisonment as traitors, if they ever spoke of the details of the case. Eventually of course, they spoke. Recently numerous lawsuits on behalf of the workers at the facility were planned, to cover their significant care needs as they age. They’re sick. Very sick like you. Surprise, surprise. All 60 boxes of the Grand Jury work which ended in 1992, are “missing”. Just like the over seventy pounds of plutonium from the facility, all of which is likely in the local environment. People who have moved here in more recent years have no idea about Rocky Flats. They have no idea how much was dumped there nor about the missing nuclear material. The local powers that be have opened trails and a recreation area right through the facility. So called open space. You won’t see me hiking those trails. Will any of these folks ever admit what was dumped and / or simply clean it up? I have my doubts, but you’ve done your part to share your experience. Be at peace. You’ve done what you can. And thanks from us all.

Jim, I enjoy your show and I'm sorry to hear all the difficult news. Those early cold war years were played fast and loose, and I regret that people, especially from your generation, were put unnecessarily at risk, and that we've failed to deal with the damages. I know a boomer guy who worked at Rockedyne during the Shuttle era on the environmental engineering side. As cool as witnessing some of those tests might have been, he told me about what some of the teams were willing to dump in those open water ponds - unbelievably egregious cases where he had to intervene personally to prevent uncontained chemical releases. I can't imagine what went on in the earlier days. At any rate, if we have the budget to spin up these projects, we have the budget and means to prevent these decades long, very expensive horror shows. As a GenX era kid, I consider you an inspiration, not just in radio, but for your grit and as motivation to do the right thing and pick a fight on these issues. I've seen them again and again and again since the 70's. Be well Jim.

Jim, You are an inspiration to everyone. At one time or another, most of us will face our own mortality (be it natural or otherwise) but few will face it so publicly or with such a calm acceptance. Actually, acceptance may be the wrong word for you because you have chosen to act by announcing and condemning the source of your sickness. Take care and I hope you hang in there for as long as possible. 73 de AI5DD Also, I had half of my thyroid removed due to a benign tumor with a cyst over it when I was 25 years old, I'm now 57. I was born outside of Barstow California on a Marine Corps logistics base when my dad was in Vietnam.

I'm so very sorry for your illness Jim. You will be in my prayers. I'll never forget when we worked each other by chance on 20 meters a couple of weeks ago. That was the high point of my ham radio experience for sure. Many thanks for all you do for amateur radio, your videos are the best learning tools on the internet in my opinion. Please keep making them, I pray you will make many, many more and keep teaching us newbies! Robert Cullen K5TPC

We opted not to buy a house in West Hills because of this. Bought in Chatsworth instead. I'm sorry this happened to you.

We've never met Jim but you've brought me to tears. I've always thought my thyroid cancer was as a result of nuclear testing fallout in the food chain. Not much I can say to make you better other than thankyou for educating me in our ham community... 73 Jim.
