The last thing I want to be paying good money for is a bunch of Karen's with their childish infighting behavior running an organization I'm supporting. My renewal application sitting on my desk has been collecting dust for a couple weeks. I guess it's time to put it out with my next trash pickup. I will wait and see though. I'd like to see other's who back up and verify what that letter states just to make sure it's not one disgruntled individual.

Jim, you have contributed sooo much to the knowledge base that hams have come to depend on. I’ve been a ham since 1967, Extra since 1970, and I’ve learned a lot from you. BTW, I still want to build a remote antenna switch like your vacuum relay switch. Love that. Thank you for all you have done for amateur radio. You are on our prayer list.

Questionable clicked-on destination pic = not proof-read or link/site hacked? Proof reading is one thing, peer-review, technical accuracy is also often lacking.

The ARRL just sent me a letter asking if I would renew my membership, with the current state of affairs I am going to wait and see if the ARRL is worth my money. Log Book of the World is still not working. Why pay if there is NO service. 73 & stay safe.

Just Bought The Ham Clock Bundle with The Keyboard & I Cant Wait To Start playing around with it ! It Really Is A Great Device At a Great Price ! I am a Pc Nerd/Enthusiast & could easily run in a VM but the time & effort it would take to Install & set it up & get ever thing Working It Was Just Easier & Faster to Just Buy The Inovato Quadro with every thing already installed & ready to use out of the box ! I Think Every Ham Should Have one !

Well, here we are in June of 2024 and the ARRL online presence ,license and testing system has been hacked. Maybe the IT guys needed a break or could not keep up with the day to day security measures... who knows. I recently decided to come back to the hobby after many decades away. Passed test to get new callsign but it died on the vine once it hit the ARRL system. I was curious what the state of Amateur Radio is in 2024, now I know.

But Jim! Kristen McIntyre, K6WX, ARRL First Vice President, has just announced that ground is a myth! So we don't need to worry about any of this! No RF ground references, no tower/lightning safety grounds - we can so much money now! 🤣

Jim I am at the investigation stage and I just wanted to say that your presence and presentation is fantastic. You are a great communicator. I hope to get a HAM radio in the next couple months just need to understand more and I'm confident that you are the guy who will walk me through the initial stage. Thank you for your good work.

You can find out a lot about the ARRL by looking at their IRS Form 990 which, by law, must be made public. You can get a copy by searching Google for -ARRL IRS Form 990-. The ARRL reported about $15 million in revenue for years 2022/2023. They also reported about $7 million in salaries and benefits. But if you add up all the individual salaries shown on the form, they only come to about $1.4 million. Where did the remaining $5.6 million go? Most of the people working there are unpaid volunteers, so where did they spend that extra money? The lawyers and consultant's fees only came to about $300k so it wasn't spent there. I think we need an independent audit to find out where all the money is going. $15 million is a substantial amount of money so that should be enough to hire some top-rated computer engineers. In my opinion, there is something strange going on that the members need to find out about. Vote in the next ARRL election and let's get some qualified people in there. Fundamentally, the ARRL is a good and necessary organization and I would hate to see them fade away just because of bad management. I believe it's time to vote in a new CEO to straighten things out.

My recommendation: Transceiver: Yaesu FT891 Best bang for the buck 100W HF/50Mhz radio. Solid, has voice keyer, lots of awesome features. Can be used at home or portable. Amazing rig at an unbeatable price! Antennas for portable : linked dipole + 10m telescopic fibre glass pole (inverted V config) (you can build it or buy it from sotabeams) Telescopic vertical antenna 5m long (20m band and up) with a coil for 40m. (MFJ had this) Antennas for permanent installation: Homebrew fan dipole (less cost, more horizontal space required and needs to be high enough) DX commander classic (expensive but less horizontal space required) 73 de F4JAW

Just ordered one after watching your video. Some of the abbreviations may need explanations but you did well explaining For those who are mobile frequently use the repeater book app , it will display your current grid square (EM76ww) for today QRZ only shows correct if you haven’t moved and have a new address , they don’t automatically update the grid square based on your new address

One thing I am still in doubt is about the theoretical no loss feedline with multiple back and forth reflections finally sending the power out in full even if VSWR is high. What about the difference in phase of the signal with each reflection and mixing with the signal coming in at that instant from the radio? Will it not produce some distortion? Or do you mean that due to the speed at which radio signal travels, this effect will be minimal? 73 de Jon, VU2JO

Thank you so much, Jim for your thoughtful content. I’ve been a ham since 1974 and have always had MFJ products. They produce such a variety of affordable items. I wish Martin the best and I’m sorry he was unable to sell his business regarding theARRL, I totally agree with you about the May editorial. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but the printed QST magazine, since the first of the year has a much lower print quality to it. Thin paper stock, and poor color transfer, all the while I pay more money to get it..

Hello Jim , I'm John PD7JV < for one year now> Last 2 Years SWL Station to get intrest of H.A.M Radio Again. After i was thinking wat to do on HF The Bands ? Digi modes and SSB . I got a second hand Yaesy 991A (800Eur) , Chameleon Loop ant second hand (400 Eur) ,X-50 for VHF/UHF and a SWR Power meter, power supply, Coax .... Total Price around 1600 Euro. My location is not aloud a big antenne. The Yaesu 991A have also VHF/UHF so i don't have to by a second VHF Radio . Low power max 20w SSB and 10W Digimodes i connect more than 6500 stations in one year. Expirimental : make a Endfed ant 10,20,40M my self , for les than 35Euro working great on my Barge. One year later i expand the hobby with more Radio's :-) The Radio Virus Got Me. Close friends Radio HAM stations helpt me and i help also new hams . 73 To All have A Good DX.😎

Well Said, Jim! Better coax is always a good investment. Get the best coax you can afford. Its an integral part of your antenna system. Another advantage is, in my experience, better coax will also last longer before needing replaced. I'm retired from the communications electronics field, and I've had to replace a lot of cheap coax over the years. 73 -mike

I believe the monetary cost of setting an HF ham station is actually very small besides the other requirements like obtaining a license and setting up an adequate antenna. The vast majority of HF ham operators never do long distance (multi skip) DX QSOs. The truth is everyone lives in town now. Although it is possible to go around the globe with a ten watt rig and a coat hanger, you will soon want to improve your situation. The real difficulty will be the antenna, and the best solution will be more than $4K. There is so much to do on the HF bands in besides inter-galactic DX. You can join one of the nets. You can collect QSL "cards", complete your 50 states award. Participate to the QSO parties. Join the field day group. Set-up your own field day team. How about the winter field day? How about hunting POTAs? How about making your own POTA activation in the park next to your place? etc... The real fun is within one skip distance. Thrust me, although it is very glamour to have a QSO with the King of ... with your 50W rig, this won't have much impact on your hobby.

JIM HEATH-W6LG UPDATE: From what he told me about his bone marrow aspiration results, the indicator they use went from >10 to <1, around 0.05. However, I have been unable to clearly communicate with him to get the entire story. Jim was undergoing Chemotherapy on Friday, May 17, and tried to call me while I was on the MMSN net. I called back immediately following and have been unsuccessful thus far in reaching him. His voicemail is full and he is not returning email. He had reported that his wife has now lost all hearing. I don't know yet what that means or what her prognosis is. His Brother-in-Law was also having issues. Please continue to pray for them all. As a firend told me, "Getting old SUCKS. Don't get old". 73. George Blake
