The Kousa and Cornelian Cherry (which this is) are two different species in the dogwood family. The "Kousa" while being a common and interchanged name is actually a more odd "raspberry like" dogwood that tastes like persimmons with the typical astringent tastes outside from Asian and southeast Asian countries with a grainy, mealy yellow flesh and fruit of various colors and not the "stone pit" like the Cornelian Cherry we see here which is closely related to other "stone" pit fruits. The "Cornus Cornelian Cherry" appears in Eurasian countries like Azerbaijan, etc and has a more astringent skin and less flavor inside like a persimmon and more like a cherry which I'm sure you're aware of having had one like what we see here. I'm guessing that's the kind you tried "keeping a little too warm" by the fire, lol. Hey plants get cold but both varieties are made for it. The true "Kousa" or Cornus Kousa is more favorable to it's naturally occuring habitats in Korea, Japan, China. Unfortunately in Texas where I live we have the "Cornus Florida" what we just call the "Dogwood". No such luck on berries, they are "poisonous" here. The flowers smell great and the wood has been used by natives and everyone else hundreds of years for medicines (the bark mostly or brush their teeth with the twigs) and to make all sorts of things from arrows to dulcimers and even ROLLER SKATES! Hah, as it's very very hard and durable. These other varieties are grown in the states, readily for their colors and fruits from liqueur and wine makers to jelly and jam but unfortunately all the wild ones around here are just pretty to look at and be reminded of Easter time and the crucifixion which is the time they bloom. Anyway, just thought it was interesting the different varieties there are all over the world that in a way spread the "good news" for folks of my faith but also that some people and especially animals used the plants not just for medicine and healing but making things and spreading the good news of a Risen Christ.

In USA in the mountains of Tennessee grows the dogwood tree, bent, never grows straight, the flower in spring has four Petals, one looks like a drop of blood stain on it,,,for generations the tale is ,, once the dogwood tree grew straight and tall, good hard wood. The Roman's made the cross of the dogwood tree for the crucified people which also was used to crucify Jesus. That is why it is cursed and will never grow straight and tall no more, the blood on the flower reminds us of Jesus blood he shed. Have a great day.

Yes cornel. Kizil on turkish or Zogal on persian.. By the way ,the best vodka may done from this fruit. It will be very expencieve and strong ( 60-70 degree) and used by small portion . Local people in Azerbaijan drink it as a medecine use:)))
