Sifu Mimi Chan interviews Dr. Yang Jwing Ming on tai chi chuan
Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming has written more than 30 books and 50 instructional videos on Chinese Martial Arts. He has taught thousands of seminars worldwide, and was voted by Inside Kung Fu magazine as One of the ten people who have made the greatest impact on martial arts in the last 100 years.
Dr. Yang shares his fascinating story of how he went from barely having enough food to eat in Taiwan to becoming a world-renowned master and mechanical engineer! We discuss the philosophies and benefits of kung fu and tai chi and the challenges that face traditional Chinese martial arts today.

Wonderful to hear Dr. Yang talk about his life - inspirational, too. (And I'm only a few years younger than he is.) I own a number of his books and DVDs and enjoy his pleasant manner and interesting explanations. When he talked about young people's posture from looking down at their phones and how he would sacrifice sleep in order to study and practice martial arts, I thought about my ESL students from China. I taught at a private boarding school in upstate New York, and none of my Chinese students were interested in this treasure from their own country. There was one young man who said he studied the martial arts in China, but he was studying - believe it or not - ninja skills! And my students actually did sacrifice sleep in order to pursue their passion, which was - wait for it - computer games! League of Legends, Minecraft...who knows what else. So many of us here in the west would love to have access to the Chinese martial arts masters there, and these young people from there don't think twice about it. Well, isn't that the way it always goes - jazz music was more appreciated in Europe than it was in the US, where it developed. Thanks for posting!

Great discussion Sifu Mimi! Dr Yang is such a great role model encompassing philosophy, intellect, great martial arts ability, & being able to explain things in scientific terms especially to westerners. In many ways, he's very much like Bruce Lee. Living legend much like Master Chan

Mr. Yang is not recognized as a legitimate martial artist among Chinese martial arts societies in Taiwan, China and southeast Asia regardless his popularity in western countries where people know little about Chinese martial arts and its history. The lineage of his Tai Chi teachers is questionable. Kao, Tao and Yue, Huanzhi are not listed on the board of Yang family tree. There is little information about Yue, Huanzhi. Most Chinese articles say that Yue is a disciple of Dong, Yingjie. No records show that Yue is an indoor disciple of Yang, Chen-Fu. That is different from what stated on YMAA board. Mr. Yang claimed on his YMAA board that he learned Taijiquan from Li Mao-Ching. That is incorrect. Li is a master in northern style Shaolin, not in Taijiquan. I personally learned Shaolin from Li years ago while was also learning Tai Chi at the same time. One student asked Li what are the differences between Shaolin and Tai Chi. Li said that if you play Shaolin slowly it becomes Tai Chi. What??? Hello!!! In my trained eyes, Mr. Yang's martial art is created by mixing from different styles with the root in White Crane. I learned Tai Chi from one of Cheng Man-Ching's indoor disciples. Mr. Yang's Tai Chi has too many flaws like beginners per my trained eyes. He added too many unnecessary movements to confuse people. Never saw him demonstrating Taiji Jin anywhere. Is it all a commercial tinge lie?

Kung fu is dying fast. Parents in China don’t want their children to learn Kung fu, they want them to study in higher education or business and therefore fewer and fewer people are entering the training. Even Mimi wants to be a media star and not a Kung fu master. Sad.

It seems to me that Sifu Mimi is mastering traditional Kung Fu and podcasting. In some ways like Dr. Yang mastering both traditional Kung Fu and academic engineering. Personally this makes me happy. Especially when she uses that inclination to share inspiring interviews, like this one.
