Things you need to know before you go to Waikiki on Oahu in Hawaii. Waikiki is small, it is 2 miles of sandy beach long, and about 4 city blocks wide. Waikiki attracts 72,000 visitors every day and Waikiki accounts for 42% of Hawaii's tourism revenue.
✅ Get up to 40% off hotels in Waikiki by signing up here: plannin.com/en/search?googleR...
Waikiki Meaning: “Wai” means fresh water, and “kiki” means spring-thus its nickname, “Spouting Fresh Water.” It is basically the Las Vegas Strip of Hawaii.
Waikiki is not Japan: Lots of Japanese tourists, lots of Japanese writing, busses for Japanese only, shops that cater to Japanese, Japanese Food...
Hotels: The Moana Surfrider, built in 1901, was the first hotel in Waikiki.
Transportation: Walk! Parking in Waikiki is expensive
- Royal Hawaiian Center for validation.
- JCB Card for Waikiki Trolley
- The Bus is pretty good too
Shopping: Duty Free Store -- Everyone Can Shop there and it's duty free
- And yes, they accept Yen
Coupons: Pick up the Free Maps and Tourist Magazines -- lots of great deals.
- Especially in the Japanese ones.
- Visitor Information Center, located in a Gazebo at the Diamond Head end of the Waikiki strip, Corner of Kapahulu and Kalakaua
Language: English and Hawaiian -- but also Pidgin English.
- only state in the union with 2 official languages.
- In Waikiki you would think Japanese is a third official language
- Say Aloha!
- Hey Brah = Get your attention
- Braddah = Brother
- Wahine = Girl
Weather: Pretty Warm Year Round. BUT HUMID!!!!
ABC Store: Located on every corner. Everything you could possibly need.
Booking Stands: Avoid them like the plague -- oh, and avoid timeshares!
Free Entertainment: Lots of free entertainment in Waikiki:
- Evening Hula at the Hula Mound,
- Hula, Ukulele Lessons at the Royal Hawaiian Center
- Buskers on Kalakaua
- Friday Fireworks at the HHV
Food: Check out my Cheap Eats in Waikiki Video
You say soy sauce, we say shoyu
Spam: Spam is super popular in Hawaii. The difference is locals know how to cook it right, creating Spam musubi and Spam sushi.
Saimen: Local-style noodle soup.
Musubi (Spam Sushi Roll):
Loco Moco: rice, fried egg and hamburger patty, topped with gravy and a dash of shoyu.
Bento: A sushi lunchbox.
Shave Ice: Literally Shaved off a block of ice
Plate Lunch: A fixed plate meal, two scoops rice, one scoop macaroni and an entree.

I am an Englishman who visited Hawaii’ for the first time this year. I thought the whole island was superb with a great vibe and friendly people. Sure it was a bit crowded but it was friendly and chilled. It cost a fortune to get there but was just about worth it.

The last time we stayed 7 days and we shopped the ABC Store 30 times I saved all my receipts because after so many receipts they give you a free bag or free coffee cup . And the gentleman is right they have everything you would need well not everything but as close as it gets . They have shirts /shoes / hat/ beach gear / smokes / booze / foods / meds / toys and the list goes on and on . And the second best one stop shopping is Walgreens inland it's 3 floors ! And they have the same stuff plus more .

Waikiki trolley doesn't run to the airport. I'd suggest taking a taxi from the airport to Waikiki

I lived on my sailboat in the Alli Wai harbor for six months, the maximum. Directly across from a great shopping center. On Oahu they’re is great shooting range, loaded with Japanese tourists, I would take my M-1 Garand to show how accurate they are. I fired expert in the Army, on stationary targets I can put rounds practically though the same hole at a 100 yards. The Japanese would come to me saying “very accurate, very accurate!”

can you walk from the hotel Hale Koa to places to go out and eat and stores or is it better to take the bus
@YellowProductions
@YellowProductions 6 жыл бұрын
+maritza trotter There are lots of restaurants and stores within a 10 to 15 minute walk of the Hale Koa. It's right next to the Hilton Hawiaan Village with lots of stuff too.

I don't find waikiki to be terribly crowded. There's always a place on the beach and resaraunts always have room for you. I also don't find it to be humid. Certainly nothing like Florida or Texas.

I believe the Hilton now offers free fireworks on both Tuesday and Friday. They have been doing this new Tuesday schedule for a year and a half or so.

When I go to a city I like to go to a place where locals hang out. Where would you recommend I do that in Honolulu?
@YellowProductions
@YellowProductions 6 жыл бұрын
Anyplace that isn't Waikiki? :) Locals usually don't go to Waikiki all that much. I'd recommend the restaurants along Kapiolani Blvd just inland from Ala Moana Center. Also the Chinatown neighborhood is quite local and not too touristy

Kaka'ako has some nice restaurants and clubs. Just be sure to break away from Waikiki when you come. Hawaii offers so much more...

As someone who lives on Oahu, I definitely recommend getting out of Honolulu itself and driving to the other spots on the island. The Kaneohe/Kailua side is right around the Koolau mountains and has incredible views. The North Shore, while it tends to get somewhat crowded as well (although probably not as much as Waikiki) has beautiful beaches and food spots as well. Definitely more locals hang out in these places.

Waikiki was once a playground for Hawaiian royalty.

That's because it's in the same moku as Manoa Valley, which is where royalty lived.

Your comment outlining the fact that Waikiki is not in Japan is totally valid. Example: My Japanese sister in law, born and raised in Osaka, once told me she had never been to the United States. Then very shortly after that comment, she proceeded to tell me about her trip to Hawaii where she stayed in Waikiki. She was not joking in the slightest! She honestly visited Waikiki and came away with the notion that it is not part of 'Merica!

Hey, quick question, I hope you can give me an answer!! I’m an American, living in Japan, heading to Waikiki this weekend. Do you recommend exchanging my money or just bringing yen? What do you think would be easier? I can’t find much information on this subject... thanks!!
@YellowProductions
@YellowProductions 6 жыл бұрын
You'll be better off using USD. So yes, exchange your money. There are some places that will take yen, but it's not ubiquitous
@Islandgirl58
@Islandgirl58 6 жыл бұрын
I dont know about Waikiki and yen, away from Waikiki is only US dollars. It's best you exchange your yen, before coming to Hawaii. The atm fees is a little crazy high.
