Aaahh!!! Real Monsters is a classic Nickelodeon cartoon that ran through the mid 90's as the group behind the Rugrats we offered a chance to create their follow up series for the network. With the time of the year being perfect, let's head back to the rising era of Nickelodeon with Aaahh!!! Real Monsters.

One episode I greatly remember from this is when Ickis scares the crap out of an artist, and upon first hearing he'd be made as "The Personification of Fear" as his magnum opus, he considers it an honor at first... but, once he realizes his appearance will be so oversaturated, that he'll lose all ability to scare *anyone*, he panics. And then, desperately tries to stop it. I think a lot about that episode. Especially with the advent of the Internet, in how things like Slenderman, the Backrooms, even Cthulhu, they all lost their ability to invoke fear because of the oversaturation, overexposure, meme culture, and especially parody. That commentary feels a lot more significant today, in how scary things can end up losing their impact if they become *too* popular.

Man I remember this show! It was the "surreal show" before Invader Zim overtook it. This show didn't stand out as others (I often consider it and The Angry Beavers the least talked about Nicktoons shows) but I really do love the premise of it. Plus, it's the perfect show to watch through on Halloween lol

I loved Oblina so much as a kid that when they released the episode where she had braces and she got her braces removed, I still remember a scene of her talking to a dead spider. That’s how excited she was and that’s how much it impacted me. I’m 35 now. 😅

One of my favorite episodes but poor Oblina, that cocky muscular Monster just play with her, just for seeing his reflexion in her braces, she even cries, the ending was soo cute, Ickis and Krumm confort her and they make her to feel better, they are right, she is awesome, brave, weirdly pretty and smart, her friends are soo sweet, specially Ickis, he was the one that mostly say these good things to Oblina, he really cares for her 💕, Ickis even seems to be angry when he see that guy with her .

This is one of the first shows I remember ever watching. There are a few episodes I specifically remember seeing as a baby, and I didn't really understand what was going on or what anyone was talking about, I was way too young. But the visuals, world, and character designs really stuck in my brain for years to come, without entirely knowing what all that was associated with. So when I stumbled across it so many years later as an older teen, it felt like I was reliving a fever dream while simultaneously completing a weird puzzle in my brain that I have finally found the missing pieces to. I've recently started getting back into the show as an adult and it's actually become one of my favorite cartoons! I was surprised to see how little attention it got compared to other 90's Nicktoons, same with Angry Beavers.

YES YES YES, I ADORED it in the 90s!! It was my favorite Nicktoon before 'Hey Arnold!' put it second, right before Doug:) Ickis was my favorite, totally the monster version of early Arnold right down to the SAME HEAD SHAPE:):) Thanks to also loving The Cryptkeeper back then, imagine my delight when I found out he was Ickis--AND Buster from 'Tiny Toons';) To this day, 'The Switching Hour' is my favorite episode...

My favorite part of the show was how surprisingly dramatic it was. My 10 years old me was super in love with Ikis xD, the characters were surprisingly complex, and had very interesting and different backgrounds that helped us understand why they were the way they were.. I still love this show. When it comes to the 90s Nickelodeon was my favorite, it may have been what motivated me to want to be an animator since I was a child along with the Looney Tunes, but to this day for me it will always be the best Nickelodeon show that most did not appreciate because of the grotesque aesthetics. The Angry Beavers was an other favorite.

Klasky Csupo really dominated the 90s and 2000s with its surreal yet charming animation style that pretty much defined Nickelodeon in general. _Aaah! Real Monsters!_ feels like Nick's answer to _Monsters Inc._ way before the movie even existed, which I was very fond with its similar premise as a kid.

I really enjoyed this show and thought it was pretty underrated. I can't help but feel that the world building in this show, Pixar's Monster's Inc. took some inspiration from, especially the whole needing to scare humans in order to live and thrive. Also Sulley and Mike having a similar character dynamic to Ickis and Oblina with both Ickis and Sully both coming from a family that has at least one member known for being highly praised for their talent for scaring and Oblina and Mike being the studious/ bookworm monsters.

I was born in 99 but saw reruns of Aaahh!!! Real Monsters on TV and yeah while it wasn't my number one favorite or anything I definitely thoroughly enjoyed it. I had a tendency toward the "creepy" cartoons. What's funny is I actually started rewatching it yesterday and then this video came out today. I think Oblina was my favorite as a kid and might still be my favorite, though Ick is more relatable to me now, what with being somewhat unsure of his abilities and the fact that it seems to be something of a running gag for him to be considered cute when he wants to be scary/taken seriously.

I used to be very obsessed with the show until I started having chest pains when I was nearly 17. Although I did related to Ickis when I was 16, as I grow up into adulthood, realize that I related to Oblina because how serious she is and very smart like I am. This and Gravity Falls are major influences for my show, Evelyn. Because how the stories and character development really helped me practice for my show I always wanted to make. And this and Gravity Falls means a lot to me even as an adult. Even though I miss this show so much. It’s like a modern version of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow with the first episode almost having the same plot Like Rocko's Modern Life being a modern version of The Wind in the Willows.

my favorite subplot that would appear every so often via flashbacks is the WW2 (aka the time of no scaring) story where a big secret was the monsters helped the allies run an underground resistance which the 3 found out about by following the headmaster to old vets home where they're drinking tea and the officer says could you imagine drinking tea in the old days and it shows them talking and head monster leaving and the rest of the story is them trying to get him to tell them about it and he finally does ....and then every so often him or another monster would tell a short story where the 3 would be the main characters....
