I think part of the reason why this movie worked is because Oguri Shun (The person who plays Gintoki) is a fan of the manga/anime. When people like a piece and gets to work on an adaptation for it, their passion for it really shows and makes it better. The same thing applies for the Jojo movie. It still sucked, but the people who worked on the CG were big fans so the CG is one of the only things that are in the movie that is decent.

Candy Land true but, a litte fun fact i love ogurin and it turns out before the move release, a japanese show interviewed him and asked him to show them his manga collection, and fans got angry over the fact that he only have 1 volume of gintama. but he nailed it so it doesnt really matter now!

You can just watch it like it is multiple anime series. You can jsut watch like 20 episodes then you can hold the series and continue later in 2 weeks or 1 month. I don't really get why you should be intimidated because it has too many episodes, you can just stop when you feel tired and continue later specially with Gintama because it's pretty episodic.

I think it's because Gintama live action intentionally made with low budget humor movie. Just like the tv drama 'Yoshihiko and the Great Satan's Castle'. And the both shows are unexpectedly good in the humor aspects. And they made A LOT OF JOKE ABOUT THE LOW BUDGET THING. That's why Gintama movie were able to pass beyond their fan's expectation (or maybe we were just too pessimistic about the movie). And it's because Oguri Shun

Rebic I think most of the reason America has been failing is because they are choosing movie that are difficult to adapt without sacrificing the story and using large quantities of CGI... if they chose simple stories like a average high school romance or a romcom I'm sure they would have better success.

Gintama is one of the best, if not THE best comedy series in a lot of peoples' opinions. This might not be a super well known series, but a live action that I really enjoyed was the Rurouni Kenshin live action because it actually had GOOD fighting scenes because the series is based off of samurai and the such. I still haven't watched the Gintama live action film, but now I really look forward to seeing it!

Gintama is my one true anime love, and my favorite part of this live-action gig is that Shun Oguri is Gintoki... ...Not because he's the best for that role, but because they totally throw the actor, himself, under the metaphorical satire bus during Kyubei's birthday party (Ep. 154). It's just like those guys to break the fourth wall from both directions.

As a big fan of Gintama and Suda Masaki, I was a bit worried about this film. I'm glad to have seen so many people giving it good reviews, so at this point I feel confident enough to actually try this bad boy out when I get a chance :D Thanks for the little review man~

Gintama LA was gold. I can't say what particular thing does make it work, everything is just perfect together. Other great LA for me is Rurouni Kenshin for shounen, Nodame Cantabille for Josei, and Orange for Shoujo.

dude you have no idea how bloody , epic , heart breaking and sad the anime can be i suggest watching the second movie "be forever yorozuya" to get the full picture of the show

I would say it's more like the american equivalent of the simpsons. Lots of references everything is a joke or a setup for a joke with some interspersed "serious" arcs here and there. Don't be fooled by the show ratings it gets on MAL. It's not that good for newcomers to anime, most references will go over your head. The characters are mostly one-sided outside of the main trio. But if you're well versed in Japanese references like...most japanese people are then you'll probably enjoy it.

Gintama absolutely FLEXED on everybody by actually having an AMAZING Live-Action movie. It's like that time in Food Wars when nobody wanted to challenge Eizan because the judges were bribed so a miracle would have to happen so Soma manages to win. Gintama managed to have an AMAZING LA movie against all odds. And that's a flex

I also watched this movie on a plane, and I really liked it. Never seen Gintama before (did try once but wasnt in the mood), and I agree that they got all the characters introduced to a good amount and like one of my first thoughts on the movie was how well they managed to fit so much stuff into a two hour movie, like it really felt like seeing an entire arc.

S'up! New Gintama fan heeere. Been binge-watching the anime for the last 3 weeks and I've just finished the Ghost Ryokan arc (131-134). Saw the live action movie about 2 weeks ago... at first I didn't really like it because 1) I already know the story, and 2) The tone is pretty serious and I never really enjoy Japanese movies whenever they start rambling about good and evil and all that existentialism bull. But then a few days later I decided to come back to it and enjoyed it a whole lot more. Why? Because by this time I've binge-watched more episodes, got to know the characters more, and so I think the live cast nailed their characters, especially the Yorozuya gang (though Kagura's supposed to be younger; basically a child). Whenever a scene feels rushed or a joke seems a bit awkward, I just recall what I know about the characters in that scene and the whole situation improved. I guess that just means some knowledge of the manga and anime is required before getting into this, after all. Looking forward to the second movie! Cheers!
