Why is Victini Number 0? I said: WHY is Victini Pokemon number 0? There's over a thousand Pokemon, each with a national dex and regional dex number. In Pokemon's 5th gen, Pokemon Black and White, They decided to add a secret mythical Pokemon that is put BEFORE the starter Pokemon in the Pokedex, Victini. Why would they do that? and what even is Victini for that matter? Why is Victini number zero?

I'm pretty sure it's number 0 to keep how many pokemon in the game secret. Since the event for Victini was available when the game was released. They probably didn't want people to catch it and go oh that's how many pokemon are in the region!

I was thinking this was the main reason, too. Especially considering B/W only had Unovan Pokemon in the dex before the post-game and being able to glimpse the end of the dex before the third gym would ruin some of the surprise.

I remember it being pretty heavily marketed prior to release that Unova would have added ~150 all new Pokémon (in homage to the original 151). Granted, Unova added 152 total non-mythicals, but it wasn't as if they were trying to be secretive about the fact they were adding a new batch of ~150 Pokémon.

I got a Victini from the event around the launch of BW (my first Pokémon game was Black). I remember getting very stuck against Ghetsis, remembering 'oh wait Victini's Pokédex entry says it will bring victory, doesn't it?', and then bringing my level 15 Victini to the fight against Ghetsis. It did not bring victory.

I think the reason behind Victini being a rabbit might have to do with the myth that a rabbit foot gives luck, something that Victini's signature ability Victory star does, as it boosts the accuracy of any move used by Victini or it's allies.

You talked about how Victini had similarities with the Statue of Liberty. A lot of immigrants said that the statue was the first thing they saw when coming into America by boat. Maybe that's why they also wanted Victini to be the first Pokémon you saw in the PokéDex.

I’ve done some digging and Victini might be based on the “Skvader” a mythical creature from Sweden that’s basically a European hare with the back, wings, and tail of a goose. It seems to match the Pokémon appearance perfectly.

Victini could also be a representation of nuclear energy hear me out : he's the "never-ending flame" with "unlimited energy" just like nuclear powerplants (the flame is metaphorical obviously nuclear powerplants don't use fire). It also symbolizes victory over the darkness as the energy it provides light up your house. Finally, it could also be seen as nuclear warfare, it always brings victory in the meaning of "whatever happens, my opponent is dead anyway so I win". Also you could argue the psychic type is a reflection of the impact on mentality nuclear energy had and still has. Maybe that's not the "correct" "mainstream" interpretation but I personally like this darker interpretation.

Since you mention rabbits, let me remind that the Japanese word for Rabbit is Usagi. It's a USA-Usagi, along the lines of the similarly rabbit-like D4C. (That and 0 also fits the nature/technology duality. 0 is often where codes begin their values, not 1.) U and V used to be the same letter, so I guess it also has its own duality.

I have a theory on why it is 0. When someone from another country, the first thing that they see when boating into New York was the Statue of Liberty. So, maybe it was used similarly to represent people entering the region by using Victini. I know this is probably far fetched, but it could be a possibility.

Since Victini is constantly shown in peril, storywise, both in the anime and the game so I actually originally misread the "victory pokemon" part of its pokedex as the "victim pokemon"

I think, considering Gen 5 was thought of as a soft reboot, they wanted to make a mythical that kinda followed along the lines of Mew in gen 1: a complete mystery. If you didnt know what the dex number for it would be, you wouldnt even know it existed, and the fact that Liberty Garden is even mentioned and I think you can even see it but not go there kinda bring back the idea of the truck by the SS Anne.

You brought up the idea of war a lot so allow me to propose the 000 being somewhat similar to the lack of rank of the Guards of the Unknown Soldier. Who guard the monument with no rank so that they can never outrank any missing soldier. The best of the best with no rank at all.

I've always believed the reason for Victini being designated as #0 in the Unova Dex is because the number zero is sometimes used to represent infinity. A zero is just a circle, after all, and a circle has no defined beginning or end, and is therefore an "eternal" shape, representing infinite possibilities. In that manner, coupled with the Dex entry about Victini having an internal source of infinite energy, it makes sense to have it as #0 in it's Regional Dex.

also did you know the numbers had to do with what angles you could get from them? 1 gave 1 angle in its shape. 2 gave 2 and so on. 0 being angle-less as the O or Oval shape, therefore valueless. The value hinged on the angles.

I always saw Victini's numbering as a play on the old saying of "Victory above all" or "Victory over all" Because Victinie is "above/over" all other pokemon in their generation.

Mew was the secret optional pokémon that looks like a cute furry animal and that that came after all of the others in the pokedex, Victiny thus is the secret optional pokémon that looks like a cute furry animal and that comes before all of the others in the pokedex.

I always figured Victini came first because it was the only mythical that we ever got at the very launch of a new generation. This meant that players were meant to have it at the start of their adventure rather than at the end, so it made sense to have it earlier in the pokédex. This may be a coincidence but I also felt that it gave Arceus a special place being sandwiched between two mythicals, not allowing "basic" pokémon to touch it in the national dex.

If you have a 3DS (or a way to connect your og DS to your router) you can actually access fanmade servers in BW and its sequels to trade and probably even battle and access mystery gifts! I’m replaying them with these being available and it’s a game changer.

My theory back in the day was that Victini was the first Pokémon the Unovan settlers saw when arriving at the shore. Thus building at that place the Liberty Garden. (to me it was akin to the moment, Ash saw a flying Ho-Oh in Episode 1, something like that)

Victini is one of my favorite Pokémon for a very special reason. Before I really got into the Pokémon fandom I was at a game store with my dad and some of his gaming friends. I went to the counter with one of these friends (a lovely lady who gives the best hugs) to buy some snacks or a drink when I saw a container of tiny Pokémon figures. Put together, they were all so colorful that I couldn't take my eyes off them. Plus, I've always had a fascination for tiny things. The lady noticed this and offered to buy me one. I chose randomly and got Victini. I still have the figure. It's really cheap and low quality, but it has sentimental value and I often carried it in my pencil case at school as a lucky charm because of its lucky abilities in the game's lore.

Other than the apple rabbit design, I always imagined the reason why it was rabbit-like was because if you make a V with your hand, it also makes a rabbit head (especially for shadow puppetry and all).

I think Victini being number 0 might also be in reference to computers starting at 0, combined with being the winner of a thing getting first place. Unlikely? Sure, but not impossible

I've always thought Victini was #000 simply because it's technically available really early on in the BW (I think before the 3rd gym) so if they put it at the end with the other legendaries the player would be left with a ton of empty dex entries they'd have to scroll through to reach it

I play through the event when the games first came out and I always remembered it being 0 as "we made it number 0 on the pokedex to hide it from team plasma, so that they wouldn't find it and use its victory bringing powers for the wrong reasons."

I've read several theories from way back when I was in Middle School (good god, that was almost 10 years ago) that Victini being number 000 in the Unova Dex is somehow a reference to Missingno. in Gen 1 being number 000 in the Kanto dex. But seeing as Missingno. was clearly not meant to be anything but garbage data, I didn't really believe it back then. And I still don't.

Another theory for why Victini was assigned as number 0 could be that it was to prevent trainers from going after it. Being trapped by Team Plasma for so long would make it distrustful towards humans and more likely to attack them, so it was given number 0 to fool trainers into thinking there were no more pokemon to catch.

I always heard it was because they made Victini specifically for the movie and for some reason related to how late in game development Black & White were they couldn't have Victini be the last one in the unova dex so they made it the 0th instead.

I think Victini was simply placed as the 000 Pokémon because you receive it through the event at the beginning of the game and so since legends and mythicals are usually way later in the Pokédex, they didn’t want you having all those empty entries in your Pokédex since you’re still in the early game. It’s literally just a technical reason. Ever since Gen 5 they haven’t released a mythical as an early purchase bonus and just release them later on.

With the rabbit thing, i think its a parellel to Luck or Fortune rather than Victory like most other things at play here, since some victories do come through a sheer stroke of luck, plus its a good way to explain how the dex entry mentioning the trainer with it always wins. Maybe instead of its blessing them with the power or energy needed to win, it quite literally shapes the world and changes random chance in your favor so that you always do? That'd be pretty well represented by a rabbit imo.

If victini's origins involved the statue of liberty maybe the number 0 represents that for many immigrants the statue of liberty was the first thing that they saw of the USA, so victini is the first thing that you see in the Pokedex, number 0

I lucked out, shortly after bw came out I bought a used white from gamestop. Whoever sold it had done pratically nothing in the game but the first gym, and they still had the liberty ticket. So I was able to get victini despite missing it myself 😊

The way I always interpreted what Juniper said was that they designated Victini as number 0 to keep its existence hidden from people (like Team Plasma) who’d use its unlimited power for evil. That’s the reason Victini was kept in Liberty Garden, ironically having its liberty taken away. Once you find it and save it from Team Plasma, who also found it, Victini’s existence could no longer be hidden. Therefore, Juniper (and the hordes of police officers with her) let you keep it.

I have a strong emotional attachment to Victini since Black was my first game and the Victini card tin was my first entry into the TCG. Can't be too mad at a little baby for that.

I thought Victini and it’s Fire/Psychic typing as well as it’s dex entry was in reference to the Atomic Bomb. Because it was used by the USA which Unova is based off of a city from, and because those bombs were what brought ‘Victory’ to the allied forces. And I always assumed Victini was number 000 and put in front of the grass starter as a way for it to be “up front” and/or “in your face” so as not to let Americans forget that we first dropped the bomb. But being first to do such a thing isn’t something really to be proud of so it doesn’t get a number 1, but the number 0. In fact I feel like I saw a L&G episode that described it this way before.

Victini is a rabbit because rabbit's feet are said to be lucky (I think sometimes the rabbit itself and not just the feet) but there's another reason why, lady luck and lady liberty, it fits. Yes luck plays a part in Victory and its ability only further helps bring luck given iirc, it boosts the accuracy of moves. (Even if am recalling wrong there, luck is still part of victory so the lady luck bit still fits) It being an Apple sliced rabbit though is likely to make it a cute mythical and more so that kids would enjoy.

in relation to why victini looks like a bunny/rabbit is that the aforementioned animals are quite well known for how much they procreate, which could be seen as a symbol of prosperity.

I actually think it being based on the Statue of Liberty and being zero makes sense. Because when people immigrate to the United States through New York specially back the early 1900's the Statue of Liberty was the first thing they saw that marked that they had arrived in America. So that's why it's first by being zero because you who emigrated to New York in the 1900's so Statue of Liberty as the beginning of their American Journey.

I agree with everybody who said it was to prevent spoiling the actual number of new Pokemon in the games. That or Japan sees the US as ass backwards and made VIctini's number reflect that by putting the mythical before the starters instead of at the very end.

Rabbits do symbolise good luck, and people used to cut rabbit legs for good luck, it’s a popular trope such as oswald the lucky rabbit, and obviously a pokemon that allows you to win any battle would be associated with good luck.

Nice. If only Victini can just expand Manaphy's breedable capabilities. Like what would had happened if Victini expanded the demotion of the old mechanic that Mythical Pokemon cannot be bred? Like, I would love breeding Victini in a Pokemon Game like how I would breed Minccino a lot.

4:41 I've read somewhere that she's originally a Egyptian woman showing light to Asia and was supposed to be placed at Suez Canal, Egypt. Statue was deemed too expensive by the Egyptian authorities cos they already spent a huge sum making Suez Canal, so they rejected it. So the artist turned her in to Roman Goddess of Liberty. Funny enough Black and White come out on my Birthday and I Preordered it and got the Victini event and used it a lot, and ironically my dad and moms family are from New York so those games were special to me lol

Victiny is Unova's equivalent to Mew. It's a mythical Pokémon that not many ever wittnessed to the point people aren't even sure if it acctually exist. Much like a rumor among kids who just got their first Pokémon games and heard from one another that there's this extra hidden Pokémon that's really hard to find. So hard that the only way for you to get is by glitching the game itself, or waiting for an event. Or in-universe i guess... manipulating your world and therefore risking the destruction of your own reality.... Just to get that cute mysterious thing. It wouldn't be hidden if it was at the end of the Pokédex right next to other mythical and legendary Pokémon, would it? So instead it's at the beginning, hidden and assigned with a number you wouldn't expected it to be assigned with. It was hidden right where you'd least expect it.

I get the feel from the event text that the reason (in-universe at least) was that the professor knew "well there's only the one Victini in the world so we'll make it number 0 to hide it. That way, all the other kids who do their journey can still complete the dex, but you who actually got it completed it better."

I always thought it was a joke from the devs since if you have a list of things in code the first item had an index number of 0. And since it was a reboot it would make sense to have the mythological pokemon in the beginning.

I just thought about this. Victini is just plot armor given form. Think about it. With Victini around you literally can't lose. This little guy just turns you into the main character.
