Wait...What? I Bought A Tudor Black Bay 54 After Selling TWO Black Bay 58s???

After buying the Tudor Black Bay 54, I started thinking about how it happened even after selling two Black Bay 58s. The Tudor Black Bay 58 was released back in 2018 to universal praise and for good reason. Tudor finally created a smaller 39mm vintage diver that wears incredibly well. Tudor then continued on to release the slightly more modern looking BB58 Blue and this was my chance to finally experience the solid refinement and simplicity of a Black Bay. The following year Tudor made waves again by introducing the Black Bay 58 925 which is not only a precious metal BB58 but one done in silver with a grey dial and bezel. This was the perfect combination for me and I had to get it.
So if these iterations of the BB58 were so seemingly perfect, why did I decide to sell both of them, and then why did I buy the Black Bay 54, a seemingly similar watch? Well there are quite a few reasons that played into my decision and in this video I’m going to explain why I bought the BB54 after all by answering three questions. Why did I sell my BB58s, how and why I decided to buy the BB54, and finally did I make the right choice 2 months later? Let’s find out.

The 58 is so well made and perfectly proportioned for a sports watch. It borrows from classic Tudors and Rolex without being a slave to being an exact copy . It really is it’s own thing. The gilt bezel gives the 58 a warm feel, the red triangle offers a pop of color paying homage to the Rolex Big Crown, the chunky coin edge crown is so satisfying to wind with a refined matching coin edge bezel and I love the snow flake seconds hand. It’s different from the more traditional lollipop style. By the way, 39 mm is on the smaller side for a modern sized sports watch. I think anything smaller is playing vintage territory.

Do you ever watch back your old videos and think - I’m always convinced by a watch until I’m not convinced by a watch? You like having new things. Buying new things. Researching new things. That’s totally normal. It’s not that one watch is better than the other - one is simply newer than the other. Until it isn’t newer anymore. When people figure this truth out I think life becomes easier. Most people don’t want to accept this though for fear it makes them shallow or overly consumerist and materialistic. Ah well.

The BB54 looks perfect on you! I just received mine on a rubber strap and I’m head over heels! My BB58 black has been my most-worn watch for the last few years.

Glad you found the 54 right for you. I decided to go Ranger route and now have a perfect bracelet for my bb58 which happens to fit perfectly and has the amazing t fit clasp.

As always TWI it's great to hear your constructive views with great personal experiences of other watches. Great videography and editing. I have yet to see the BB54 in the flesh but will certainly take a look at some point. If the sunburst dial is similar to my Pelagos 39 there could be some serious consideration to add it to my collection but something else would have to go to make room for it and that could be a very difficult decision. I am glad you found the 54 to be the right one for you. It is a nice watch and the t-fit clasp is great. Aesthetics are very subjective. My 58 black/gilt is perfect for me. My favorite features on my 58 are the red triangle and that the gilt on the bezel matches the gilt on the dial, making the watch look very cohesive and organic in its design. Both of those features are missing on the 54. I'm now wearing my 58 on a Forstner jubilee bracelet, which is more comfortable and adjustable than the Tudor bracelet, while keeping the vintage vibes. I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your BB58 so much! all the gilt accents on your BB58 do make for a good looking and cohesive design albeit one that doesnt quite work when on my wrist but thats what keeps things interesting in the watch world! I'm hoping that forstner releases a bracelet for the BB54 soon, they make great stuff

Agreed! In my opinion the gold bezel text and red triangle are hugely important. It’s a dealbreaker for me, I think it just looks strange without them

Last week was my birthday and I got the 54. I has always loved the look of the 58 and was going to be get one, but when the 54 was introduce this year I had to go that direction. For all the reasons you mentioned it's fantastic. Such a great watch!

Wouldn’t it be awesome if Tudor announce in 2024 that BB54 is discontinued, it was a one year launch to pay tribute to the very first vintage Submariner. Everyone would suddenly fall in love with it 😁 I’m wearing the BB54 since past two months, and I love it. I do find myself occasionally/mistakenly looking at it for the date.

I have had my 58 OG since release and worn it on the bracelet.Ordered the silk OEM "nato" from the AD and bought an expensive pair of tweezers to fit it myself.I live in Spain and put the silk on at the start of the heatwave.Apart from giving it a new look its cool, comfortable and easy to adjust.Tudor woven straps seem expensive but you might have a look if they do one for the 54.Have enjoyed seeing all the iterations but still content with my new birth year piece.

For reference, what's your wrist size? I reckon my wrists are the same size as yours, and I have 45mm watches but I reckon a 39mm dive watch is a sweet spot for me. I'm wondering if trying a 37mm will work for me

Great video, per usual. BTW - I haven’t a clue what the comments that “you bought it to make content” are on about. I mean, so what? Unless you have a secret stash of Pateks and Cartiers, you like tool watches and divers. I believe you truly liked this watch. You then actually wore the watch you actually bought and made a video. I own two BB58s (Blue & OG) and they are great and regularly worn members of my collection. I've tried on the 54 as I like the T-Fit update, but for me it's just a bit too dainty as a daily desk diver IMHO.

Totally agree with you Sir. I too bought a BB 54. I takes me back to my Rolex Sub which I bought in 1976 - when I was diving. than was a great watch but too big and chunky on my six and a half wrist. The BB 54 is perfect, they only thing I might have preferred is a 'silver' hands and hour marker finish. My BB 58 blue is now up for sale, a great watch but simply too big for me .P S, you are not an idiot, you know tour watches and make great vids. Thank you, best wishes, Mick. 😉

I like the BB58 black/blue/silver. Tried on the 54 and it seemed a little plain compared to the black 58 and the dial is fairly small due to the bezel. I’m now leaning towards the Pelagos 39 instead and possibly a silver 925 to go with it.

I also had the 58 blue at one point I sold it even though it was a good piece but I was letting go of the collection it was apart of. Fast forward a year and they came out with the 54 and it’s been my one and only piece since

Oh wow you're the mythical "one watch guy!" thats a very impressive feat and I must say that conceptually i could totally see how the BB54 can be "the one watch." Every time I put it on after a few days of not wearing it it feels like I'm wearing a great pair of broken in shoes. it just works exactly as intended 😀

I want to get 54 but the gilt numerals dial text with a white bezel text bugs me. Why can’t they choose one? Size and all perfect for my 6.5inch wrist. But why is it so confusing colour wise. I like the silver one!

They're keeping it in line with the original tudor submariner which had a gilt dial and silver on the bezel but i'm sure this wont be the last BB54 so hopefully they put out something you like in the future! A BB54 925 would be mighty fine!

@@SIZZO76I own a 126610LV, a 2018 gold fluted datejust, and a Tudor chrono black bay. I don't consider the Tudor a "poor man's Rolex" at all. I feel that all of the idiots that say this and are so desperate to compare the two as an attempt to make fun of people buying Tudors, are the broke bastards that can't afford either in the first place. It's some stupid jealousy fit comment cause they themselves can't afford either a Rolex or Tudor so they are self reflecting by trying to put people down buying Tudor. These idiots don't realize that by merely comparing the two, they're directly associating the two brands themselves (morons). If they're two such different companies, why do you keep associating them then? 😂 These tools assume people are buying it because they can't afford Rolex (again, because somehow these morons think they are the same company 😂). There's no world in their tiny brain where people prefer the design and/or price point of the Tudor over a Rolex lololol (not because they can't afford it, but because a Rolex is just not worth the extra cash for them and their lifestyle but again these idiots too stupid for critical thinking) . I think it looks too small on your wrist. To me, the BB54 looks better on a lady's wrist. But it's just one person's opinion. The BB pro you have looks a lot nicer to me, size wise.

The BB Pro is a great size no doubt about it but for me the BB54 offers another flavor of the BB style. Weirdly enough it doesn't wear that much smaller than a BB58!

If he ever makes a video announcing that he is selling his BB54 in the future (as he has already parted ways with other BB's a few times) then I'm going to expect one of the reasons being the 54's size.

Bb58 black looks too vintage, too fade away to the extend it looks cheap. Bb54 dial and bezel looks great but the watch is too flat and small to the extend it looks boring . If u ask me , these 2 watches are not perfection .

@@chi1057 there is no perfection hence the buying journey continues. Haha . To be honest, bb58 is so close, the case and bracelet size are right, the dial needs a refresh (but I doubt so since it’s inspired by vintage model) and the micro adjustment clasp needs to be added
