"Picking an Aztec for your antihero in your anticolonial tale is, well, it's a choice" is a hilarious point
@colbunkmust
@colbunkmust 6 ай бұрын
to be fair, the Aztecs did their fair share of empire building and colonialism. One of the reasons why the Hernan Cortes' conquistadors were so successful against the Aztec Empire, despite being severely outnumbered was that all of the Aztec's neighbors hated the Aztecs because of the chronic warmongering they engaged in. At the siege of Tenochtitlan the Aztecs were outnumbered despite the Spanish only have hundreds of soldiers, because there were tens of thousands of natives fighting with the Spanish against the Aztecs.
@gregoryreiber104

Yeah that's why I thought the point was hilarious and agreed with it. They were really pushing the anticolonialism point yet they made their antihero a member of an empire that actively used colonialism. That was one cringy problem with the Woke, "Europe Bad, Everyone else, good," problem with historical discussions. There was a scene in Eternals about Cortes sacking Tenochtitlan in 1525 . One eternal called it "genocide," and wanted to intervene to save the human sacrificing Aztecs, from the bad Conquistadors. The others agreed to stay neutral.

@@bl8388Aztec Empire was horrible, but using human sacrifice as an excuse for genocide and plunder is quite a twisted rhetoric. Imagine Chinese Empire genociding Europe because they waged war and burned people at the stake. Not to mention Spaniards didn’t restrict mass murder and enslaving to Aztecs, but they treated the natives they “saved” from Aztecs pretty much the same. Conquistadors are clear cut villains in this story, no matter how bad Aztecs were.

@@TheLittlePlatoon I want to admit that I didn't know that Black Panther 1 and 2 was a racist stereotype of indigenous tribes within Africa. I honestly thought they were just keeping in check with the comic book lore and TV show lore of The Black Panther. I honestly thought they were just sticking close to the actual OG lore of Black Panther with some creative liberties taken. I did not know they actually tried to base the fictional country of Wakanda in the fictional Universe of the Marvel series on the actual indigenous tribes within the real country of Africa! As long as he got proper tribute for being an accomplished person both as an amazing actor and someone who used his platform to make a positive impact in the lives of young people. I’m still remembering him visiting terminally ill children while he was privately battling that same illness. Chadwick Boseman was a treasure, and he will be missed by fans for sure.

When the AI tells Rammonda that Shuri's kidnappers spoke "Maya" i almost bursted out laughing cause Maya isn't a single language it is a language family, it would be like getting captured by Russian mobsters and the AI says they spoke "Slavic". Perhaps the silly thing is that according to the producers, Namor and the Talokans speak Yucatec Maya that is the same as the Mayans who still live in the Yucatan peninsula, How an isolated civilization speaks the same way as natives who have been affected by outside influences? It also doesn't help Namor's actor Tenoch Huerta is basically Killmonger but Latino pontificating on how "dark-skinned" people have only been casted as Drug Dealers in American movies.

Because the machine was already built, Wakanda had the original machine in hand, and the US government already had RiRi's computer. You kill RiRi and leave the Princess, Shuri has a reason to replicate the detector on her own scale (think Mach 2 Iron Man compared to Mach 1), and the US government now has the outlines, to rebuild the machine that they have now confirmed can and has found Vibranium outside of Wakanda. Namor and the Talokanil, in stepping out on that action and in that way, would've screwed themselves.

I’ve noticed something about American writers view on Africa. It is completely defined by their own origins or their view in black people of US. Who are in no way, shape or form are representative of African cultures. They tend to view Africa as a continent of black people, not a continent of multiple cultures (except cosmetic differences). They are one in the end, and when they war, it’s civil war. Essentially writers are “Warmongers” - they consider all black people as “black brothers”, while brutality African nations engaged with each other easily exceeds anything Europeans did to them directly (we consider European and American slavery horrific, but African tribes sold slaves centuries before to Arabs in such quantity that buyers practiced castration of slaves with insane mortality rates because of how cheap and plentiful slaves were). There were some line akin to “white people brought immorality to this shores” in Woman King, and that is not true. People were monsters to each other since a dawn of time, and no place were utopian paradise, and less advanced place is, less humane we are there to others.

Furthermore, as much as it sucks to admit this, but the evil white colonialists were the ones that STOPPED alot of that--the British FORCED the African empires to end slavery. They (and other European powers) instituted courts, schools, some concept of public health, and a modern legal system. This isn't to say they weren't also dicks, but indeed, they came to a land where slavery and genocide was the norm and put a stop to it. You can say it was a lateral move, one form of slavery for another, but at least it gave them the tools to follow in Europe's footsteps into a more just future. They sadly are throwing that away because "fuck whitey."

Okay to add a little context to why M'Baku makes monkey noises: in the comics, M'Baku is the Man-Ape, a man in a gorilla suit much like how Rhino wears a rhino suit. Of course that would be too silly for the MCU, so they changed him.

I haven't watched this yet. Because phase 4 has the following formula: 1)Former Male hero now has a highly skilled female hero that outshines them or matches their skill set with none of the 'negative' traits of personality. 2) Every significant female is strong and powerful. 3) The villian has some sort of tragic back story that makes them less villainous. 4) Gender, Sexuality, Non nuclear family structures, race is some woven into the naritive. Not all, but at least one or two of these. 5) the female protagonists only significant flaw is the toxic men surrounding her. Most of the established heros by the end of phase 3 had earned their status. They had flaws that they had to overcome or minimize. Tony Stark started out egotistical and selfish. Even creating the arc reactor and iron man suits were self preservation. In End game his motivations are still slightly selfish, but his preservation and motives now extend to his daughter. An argument could be made that he sacrificed himself willingly to ensure she lived. The rest of the Universe was just an added bonus.

It would've been fine if the MCU had decided to BOTCH Iron Heart (Cause her character DOESN'T SELL, nobody wants her around) and decided the successor to Iron Man would be BIG FUCKING SHOCKER, HIS DAUGHTER! If the plan had been to just NOT have an Iron Man so she could grow up, develop along with the other heroes, and then take up an identity INSPIRED by her father, but still her OWN that would have been AWESOME. Instead we'll probably just never see her again, and if we do it'll be Pepper being an action hero all of a sudden and fighting an entire gang by herself to rescue her or something. (Her joining the Endgame fight was fine, it was actually kinda cool even, but she's NOT a soldier or anything on the day to day.) What we're gonna get is insanely genius young black girl out of NOWHERE that before she's even been introduced made an IMPOSSIBLE machine with NO build up, resources or.... Huh. She basically BUILT THIS IN A CAVE! WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS! Only unlike Tony, she pulled COMPLETELY new technology out of her ass, while Tony had already built an arc reactor way earlier, and in fact needed to make a much better one after he got back to his lab to replace the hunk of junk he built out of scraps. Over time he continued to iterate the design, and eventually he perfected it, removing the last of the damaging traits. A vibranium detector with NO vibranium as a school project? Yeah, just whip that up, sure, why the fuck not? Remember how when Peter was introduced his super suit was basically a modified track suit? Then when Tony provided him with a state of the art suit made from the resources at HIS disposal Peter was so insanely impressed he actually started to lean on the suit's amazing features TOO much to the point Tony took it back, then Peter had to learn it has to be HIM that's amazing, not the suit and went to the big climax of the movie wearing his track suit? Good times.

I’ve actually unwittingly read a few sci fi/fantasy books from feminist authors recently. What I have noticed is a trend of narcissism. In all their books the women are physically and intellectually superior to men, yet they tend to be held back or submissive to the “toxic” make power structure. When reading you get the feeling that the author believes that if it weren’t for men then women and the entire earth would be this perfect utopia. It’s actually hard to finish reading these books because every interaction between man and woman is the same formula (he’s evil, shes virtuous, she’s stronger and smarter, yet she acts like a slave to the male power structure of society,) there’s a lot more in leaving out but when you’re aware of it you see these writers SUCK and are promoted/hired based on pushing this agenda. Same with these movies.
@haku8135
@haku8135 Жыл бұрын
@@blumace22 as someone who reads quite a lot of fantasy, it's very important to just stay far the fuck away from a book once you catch that scent. And it's not like you CAN'T have a story where PROPER feminism is actually appropriate. There's a series that I very much like called Beneath the Dragon Eye Moons. It's about a girl that's reincarnated into another world, and in this more primitive society women have it pretty shit, almost NO rights. BUT while the main character is understandably pissed about this, especially as she IS a girl, she also just has to accept she can't change it and just opts to live the best life she can. The books aren't preachy, they don't DENIGRATE men either. There are a LOT of really good male role models in this series. Honestly this series is a great example of how to write a feminist character CORRECTLY. That is to have a CLEAR injustice and have her seek out a way to solve it, but also not having that BE the story. This story is NOT about her changing the system, nearly the entire series she's working WITHIN the system and the sexism is just the occasional "for fuck's sake, just let me withdraw my money". The main character also isn't a Mary Sue at all, she has her niche and she's great at THAT, but outside that niche she's basically a chump and she knows it. It's actually a great series, I recommend it. It's lengthy, there's like 7 or 8 books and counting, but it's consistently well written throughout.

Actually they might be MORE racist than history this time. Why? Well because as many resources as Africa had, it always missed 1 very important resource. FERTILE LAND. There's a reason Europeans managed to conquer all of the Americas before they got all that far into Africa, and no it's not disease and it most certainly isn't because of Black People's efforts against them, if anything the Iberoamericans had many kingdoms that fought harder. It was irrigation. The colonization of Africa was dammed near impossible until proper irrigation allowed for larger settlements to start being built. So why then do I say this makes Wakanda more racist than you average portrayal of Russia? Well because Irrigation was also a solid reason why precolonial africa was so incompetent at nation building itself. Europeans weren't unique in their need for food and water. EVEYONE needs those things. So nations trying to build in Africa (with the exception of Egypt) found the lack of capacity to make strong cities a major source of societal disarray. And the 1 exception was surrounded by inarable desert on most sides and besieged by foreign powers, specially from the east, making it very hard to expand. But now let's look at Wakanda, they are shown on this film to have plenty of water, a whole damned megalake with input and output rivers that would be more than enough to sustain the country and even export to their neighbors. And not only do they have plenty of arable land, they also have vibranium fed hypercrops that could resist harsher conditions and more than enough of the other resources and tech needed for it. And yet they STILL have most rurals living in mud huts with dirt roads lacking proper connection, unpaved cities with thatch-roofed skyscraper-palaces surrounded by favelas, and a ton of other basic failures at nation building. Furthermore, most of the resources Africa has are similarly very hard to acquire and that's why they didn't matter until much later, but Vibranium practically drived itself to the surface looking for you, it is THE easiest to obtain metal EVER. Wakanda should have become an imperial power in the BRONZE AGE, be a contender for Marvel's version of Alexander the Great. Yet what are we shown? A miniscule, inexplicably isolationist, glorified 3rd world country STILL ruled by a dictatorial absolutist monarchy despite not having any of the issues Africans had historically. Geographical determinism can explain at least a major part of Africa's incapacity to nation build. Yet that same determinism says Wakanda should be as large and powerful as USA.

In order to flood Queen Ramonda's thrown which is high up on the Bashenga mountain above the statue of the panther goddess Bast, which Wakanda is already 1100 feet above sea level and landlocked with no river channels (proven in previous MCU movies shown in maps) with only the lake Turkana it shares with Kenya, all of Wakanda would have had to be submerged; effectively killing all its inhabitants. Not to mention there's not enough gallons of water in Lake Turkana to pull that off anyway.
@Igwecala-xm3dg

The water explosive was placed directly in the throne room, with each explosive already being shown to have access to enough water to fully displace an automobile going at high speed. 6-8 of those were launched directly at the Queen, breaking the floor glass and largely filling that underneath space in the building with water. The whole city wasn't submerged

@@Igwecala-xm3dg it didn't make sense the water would have flown out. Her throne room was on Mount Bashenga. It was also stupid to have computer screens fixated on th windows that's not strategically logical. Wakanda is several hundred feet above sea level, land locked with only the lake by Kenya close to it. It made no sense for Namor and his people to even GET there from the ocean. If all that water got there inexplicably then many people were drowned and yet they didn't show anything of that sort

The scuba suits thing was actually set up. It was a callback to the earlier scene where the Americans were using them, and Namor killed them. This actually brings me back to the logic fail of the Winter Soldier show: "So... Wakanda didn't demand the US extradite their leader's assassin to face Wakandan justice. Falcon released said assassin, who subsequently escapes even US justice. Rather than lose their collective sh^^, end cooperation with all US agents, and demand both Falcon and Buckey be taken into custody; Wakanda instead makes a super suit for one of the *US* soldiers responsible; out of their exclusive strategic resource. Where tf is this supposed to make sense?"

Wakanda was a third world country, that had nothing of value, and did nothing but be poor to the world during CA: Winter Soldier. And King T'Chaka wasn't the only one killed by the blast either. On what grounds would the perceived bottom country on the planet have pull to call for an extradition, from the US, above everyone else? Beyond that, let's tell the truth here; Bucky Barnes returned Zemo to Wakanda and The Raft, and in thanks for that, called in his favor to deliver Sam Wilson another Captain America suit. Crying just to cry, smh

Not defending the movie, the movies inability to explain this is a definite failure on it's part and is inexcusable. I just want to point out that, in the comics, a sudden mood or motivation shift for Namor like this is reasonable When Namor is out of the water he is subject to massive mood shifts and stuff, so much so that he can go from Hero to Villain in an incredibly brief period of time Yes the films failure to show this is bad, yes that excuse in the comics in and of itself is pretty dumb, I'm just the messenger boy lol

Real history: the Aztecs were not massacred by the Spanish, like most think. The Spanish allied with enemies of the Aztecs, who had been tyrants and genocidal in their own right. When the Spanish gave them the chance for revenge, they literally couldn't stop their allies from massacring the Aztecs because there was decades of hatred towards the Aztec. They were a savage culture, and by the time the Spanish arrived, they were already having crop troubles and making human sacrifices more than ever to try and appease their gods for a good harvest.

Being short is a disability, and as a tall person, it's your responsibility to make sure short people don't get even more disabled by having to look up to speak to you. Doing this can damage their neck. Standing up while talking to short people also makes them feel threatened and unsafe so kneeling down not only prevents them from damaging their necks but also makes them feel more safe. Not doing this means you don't respect short people, you're mocking their disability, you're looking down on them and that's ableist, so be the bigger man and kneel. Thank you.

Everything to do with the Aztecs was made up because the writer realized that Namor could be read as a portmanteau for “no love” in Spanish. That was their starting point, and everything to do with the conquistadors and so on was reverse engineered from there. It’s not surprising they ended up making Wakanda look like it made sense by comparison.
