Hydrofoil Product Review | Starboard Foils E-Type 1700 for Lake Foil Surfing & Hydrofoil Surfing | Foiling NY
The E-Type 1700 is a mid-aspect ratio wing for hydrofoil surfing. Starboard is one of the leading manufacturers of hydrofoils and this is my first chance to ride one of their newest foils, so I was anxious to assemble and get out on the water. In this product review we will try the E-Type 1700 out on the lake and see how it performs carving, surfing, pumping, wake transferring and accelerating.
Promotion Disclosure: I would like to thank North Beach Windsurfing in St. Petersburg, Florida for loaning me their demo gear for two weeks so I could review the foil and share my learnings in this video.

There is something called a Robart meter that measures the foils angle of attack, this would be handy to consistently set your rear foil on this and know its AOA.

I have really enjoyed and learned a lot from your videos! I appreciate how you put so much effort into using a scientific method for your testing. That's why I was a bit surprised that you did not point out that your wetsuit gear is heavier in this test. Regardless it was still a informative review. Thank you for what you do!

You’re absolutely right! Great point. It certainly affects pumping duration which is why I am not doing that comparison. I am re-analyzing some wings in current videos so wetsuit is common across both. Thanks for the comment.

@@WakeThief Thats awesome! I had a crap windfoil session when it first got chilly here. I felt I was going backwards with my skills untill it dawned on me that I added a lot of weight with my first ride of the season in a suit. Rider weight is a huge factor particularly with take off speed.

I really enjoy the systematic approach you take in testing these wings. I'd be interested in your take on the Gofoil NL220 as that is closer in area to the 1150 than the 190 you tested.

That’s a great suggestion, Duncan. I will certainly add that to my list. I also hear the 240 is a great wing from Go Foil and might scratch my lake foiling itch. Thanks for the comment.

An additional dimension of the wing to consider is thickness of the cross-section. So far this has been one the biggest determinants to wing characteristics I've found. Thinner wings have less initial lift, could be why some wings are harder to start off the bungee, but they have less drag so higher speeds are possible. Could be a good additional factor to consider and pretty simple.... Keep up the videos!
@WakeThief
@WakeThief 3 жыл бұрын
Excellent suggestion and easy to measure. Yes. The thickness and camber differences (and location of max thickness and camber from leading edge) between two wings matter as much as aspect ratio. Thanks for this. I will do this in future reviews.

Great reviews! I’m the same weight, like the tip about 1700cm2 wings. Looks cold! Hawaii is 75 degrees and it feels so cold.
@WakeThief
@WakeThief 3 жыл бұрын
I’m jealous! 75F would be a dream about now. Reality is that a good wetsuit, booties, and gloves and the slosh of near-freezing water down my back is refreshing after foiling for an hour or so.

Your editing continues to improve/advance. Love the sneak peek at the end. Have you tested the pull force on your bungee in the colder weather? I'm curious if it has been affected by the cold at all. It was amazing to see how unstable the wing looked as you were learning it on the dock starts. I imagine it seemed very sensitive/twitchy to ride and really showed it in the carving at full speed. I was surprised at how well it did on your 2nd wake surf test when the lift didn't seem that great on the dock starts. Perhaps the lift at cruising speed is better than some others?
@WakeThief
@WakeThief 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Chad. I have not tested the pull force, but I will. I cannot figure out why it surfed the 2nd wake so well. Justin had the same reaction viewing from my jet ski. I have found that for some foil sections as the Reynolds number goes up (in this case via velocity), the lift coefficient / drag coefficient can increase non-linearly at the same angle of attack. Perhaps that's happening here. Thanks for the comment.

I believe bag is sold separately, unfortunately. I'd recommend reaching out to Northbeach Windsurfing to see.

Great review as always. Really appreciate the systematic and objective lens you take to these reviews. The "reviews" on other channels are typically from reps ("links below, contact and we'll set you up") which negates any strong POV or insights that helps riders as the conclusions are always, "...they're all good! It's just up to you and your riding style..." - not helpful :)
@WakeThief
@WakeThief 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Justin. I still find it hard to give a solid conclusion when there are variables that can change ... my hours of ride time before test, etc. I appreciate the comment

You're getting onto surf wings a bit now, not quite so much just straight pump wings. It appears to me that the trend for surf wings is less and less initial lift. This is likely due to guys paddling into bigger waves now and if there is a ton of lift, you just get launched in the air and off the board. Most surf foils now stay on the water to start and you have to help them up, then they have a much faster top speed with this type of design. That AXIS 1150 you like is huge. It's a flat water pumping wing, or hand wing (wing ding) wing. I guess a few SUP foil guys in Florida might use it for tiny waves. It's cool to see the analysis between these wings. Aside from the p180 in your list though, those are all surf wings and it makes sense none of them are as good as the AXIS 1150 for the lake. I've felt the instability of different high aspect wings on the pump. You can fix some of that with the tail wing I think. Look at how wide the AXIS 460 rear stab is. I've found AXIS (900 is what I rode) to be the most stable platform for pumping. It's also the worst at rail to rail roll. You can put it on one rail, but then it stays on that rail and you have to work to get it to go back to the other rail. I'm currently riding a Signature Albatross. While it can be a bit more unstable on the pump, just like your video of this wing. It turns in the waves so much better. Doing a cutback and then quickly rolling to the opposite rail to turn around and get back down the line is way better. Just like your video though as you spend more time on the wing it locks in better. What tail wing are you using in AXIS. Have you considered a video just reviewing tail wings? AXIS 370 was my favorite for surf. I found the 460 to wide. What I'd love to see is an analysis of the AXIS Aluminum vs Carbon mast. A part B to your AXIS mast review.

I have not tried any wings in the same class of the 1150s area and aspect ratio. If I find one I will certainly seek to try it. I have tried different rear wings and summarized my learnings in two videos: (1) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r7uXmdCnr7KrqWQ.html, and (2) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bZ1zdqt8zbDbgIk.html. I am working on a third one now with a few new wings. I have the 370 and it's one of my favorites for carving. I find the 460 best for marathon pumping. I've love your thoughts after watching these videos. I have tried different aluminum mast lengths within AXIS family, but never an AXIS carbon mast. I have tried carbon masts from other manufacturers. The mast videos are here: (1) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eZpxd5CJl7aZiWg.html and (2) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hrKSqM9prtepinU.html. Thanks so much for the comment.

I have not, but cannot wait to try it! I’ve heard the rave reviews, my only concern is that I might want a wing in the >1500sqcm range for higher lift / lower drag.
