My go to video as I had the exact same head gasket blow out between cylinders 3-4 on my Massey 165. Great advice on cleaning the stud threads as I had 4 stud holes blocked with carbon around 2 cylinders from a previous rebuild that made lifting the head off a 4 hour headache.

This video may save my tractor. I have a water leak that all attempts to plug have failed. While watching your video, the water is coming from the same place your leak was. In the next couple of weeks, I will be tearing down my Massey 165 from the top to determine if I have a head gasket problem or a cracked head issue. It will be my first major tractor fix since buying this 20 years ago. I expect your video will help me through it and hopefully end up with only a gasket repair as yours was. I will report back but I wanted to say thank you for putting this out there - it gives me hope for a good result. Thank you

You should probably change the stud that the nut was cross-threaded on. When changing out a head for any reason it's always a good idea to actually replace your head bolts or studs since they have already been stretched and barring that the next best thing is to run a thread chaser "tap or die" to make sure your threads are clean and you can torque them down evenly.

Just found your channel. Wish I had found it earlier... Having a great binge on them catching up from the very first. Great videos, really enjoying them way down here in the South Island of NZ. Well produced, not too long and I love that you include your learning mistakes as well. Lots of MFs out here in NZ. Spent quite a bit of time on a MF 135 driving for a major NZ food production company. Our ones were Multipowers which double the number of ratios (16?) Quite fast for them time on the road. Keep up the great work! Love the variety of things you work on! I thought I saw it in the background on one of your later videos it actually reminds me of a 70hp tractor I'm looking at buying that has a loader that isn't currently mounted. I'd like to see it shown in a video I bet it would be cool to have when you do need it it's a perfect size for a loader tractor I think.

Hey waldo ! Ive got an mf 165 multipower and my problem is that it puts out alot of smoke, looks like a steam angine, and is a littlebit slow/weak. Could this be the fuel injectors that are "clogged" ? great video, If i find the time I will go thru mine this winter !
@WaldosWorld
@WaldosWorld 2 жыл бұрын
What color is the smoke? Blue is burning engine oil, black is over-fueling, and gray/white is often a dirty/stuck injector, although it yours is down on power, check the coolant level to see if there's a blown head gasket causing coolant to leak into the cylinder

I am checking into buying a MF165 the concern is the guy told me you have to use ether to start it. What should compression be on those tractors? If I was to test it. Thanks
@WaldosWorld
@WaldosWorld Жыл бұрын
I don't know exactly what the compression should be, but if you have to use ether, then the compression is low. A rebuild is probably in order, but luckily these old diesels are relatively simple to rebuild. The hardest part is pressing in the new cylinder linings, but you can stick the linings in the freezer overnight and then carefully hammer them in

@@WaldosWorld The 212 has the exhaust on the right and is a short stroke version of the 236, which is the most common variant. None of the 212 have balancer units as far as I know. The 248 is a slightly wider bore variant of the 236. Both 236 and 248 had the option of balancers, fitted to higher revving applications like combines it was standard. Later balancers became standard on tractors as well and the 212 was dropped and never used in the 500 series as far as I know. I think that the 203 was dropped from the MF line when the 212 took over. Before then it was also fitted to some UK built International tractors due to a shortage of their own engines.

Your tractor has a gross engine horsepower of 58.3 so it would be handy to have another smaller tractor with around 20 hp it can do an awful lot of work and be half the cost or less operating than your Massey Ferguson. Also on our farm we always keep at least one tractor that is above the hundred horsepower.

As long as the neutral safety switch hasn’t been bypassed it’s ok to crank it standing on the ground when using the key. The neutral safety switch won’t allow for the tractor to crank with the key unless the high / low range selector shift is in the neutral position. It won’t crank in gear with the key even with a bad neutral safety switch. Outside of pulling the tractor off, which doesn’t apply in this situation here. A bypassed ( jumped ) neutral safety switch or jumping the starter terminals with a screwdriver are the only 2 ways in will crank while being in gear !! Yet regardless of that, it’s still always best to crank something from the seat if you’re able too !!!
