Walk and talk - Garmin inReach mini2

In this walk and talk I put the Garmin inReach mini 2 through its paces out on a walk in Northumberland National Park, starting from Alnham and passing up Salters Road before visiting the Shepherds Cairn.
From here we took a slight diversion passing the striking Hushie Cairn to Hogdon Law (640m above sea level), before doing a TracBack back a little way before loading up again our original course and navigating back to Alnham.
We look at both the navigational experience you get from the Garmin inReach mini 2 and also how to send both pre-set messages and text messages from the Garmin inReach mini 2.

Can’t you sync the inreach with the Garmin explore app and get the topo map (with navigation from the mini) on your phone? Also, you can use the navigation feature without a satellite subscription (or if the sub is suspended) which is often not mentioned.

Thanks for your message, if you ever want to borrow anything whilst you save up give us a shout, as we have a number of demo two way satellite communications as 2022 has been the year of that such device. Many of them have contracts already on them.

Great video. You could use your phone paired with the Mini 2 if you want to navigate using a map.

Interesting one there, as it actually uses your phone GPS to get the location fix, but your track i.e. the record of your trip, is put onto the Explore app from the inReach mini i.e. not in real time.

@@ukgpstraining Interesting. I do believe that you can force the iPhone to use the Inreach's GPS data if it was important to you--or you wanted to save phone battery. I'm not sure that's true of the current OS, though.

Sadly you can't get a BNG from the inReach explore + or the first inReach mini. The first that gave you a 10 figure BNG is the Garmin inReach mini 2. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

@@ukgpstraining No thats brilliant thanks and has helped me make up my mind. I want the SOS function for peace of mind but being able to quickly referance my location to the map is top of my list. Thanks again!

Any decent mobile hiking app will do a *way* superior job to the inReach Mini 2 on navigation and mapping. It is not the device's primary purpose. The inReach Mini 2 is for communication. Use something like OsmAnd for mapping.

I could not agree more, I was just interested to see with the addition of the navigational features over that which you get in the InReach mini 1 whether it could be used as a navigational tool. And you are right with your conclusions it is not great on that front.

@@ukgpstraining In an emergency or if lost, the navigation with saved courses, mini-map, manual coordinate input, waypoint or trackback will do the job. Thus it delivers as designed.

@@RESISTAGE That depends. If you dedicate an app on the latest iPhone model for GPS logging only, it could last more than a couple of days. The biggest battery thief is screen on-time and brightness. GPS uses very little energy. Out in nature I use OsmAnd on my phone for checking map details, calculations, elevation profiles, and waypoints. In the morning I put my phone into Airplane Mode and the GPS runs in the background. Seldom does a full day of detailed logging, including checking the offline map occasionally, use more than 20-30% of battery life.
