I agree that being bare footed makes no sense, even if you concede the grounds would have been worn smooth from foot traffic, you still have the threat of snakes, scorpions, manure etc. That part makes zero sense. Great video MAG.

So sad and emotional to watch that. Never seen anyone do this before. There’s no way he walked barefooted. Set up for sure. Michael thankyou so much for all you do. This is my favourite channel on KZfaq by far. I said to you when you first started this podcast even though you say you don’t believe in ghosts. But you need to buy Frederick Nolan’s the west of Billy the kid. There’s definitely an apparition on the page where they show you the bench he was laid out on after being shot and killed.

Thanks for that location, I'll be visiting there pretty soon. While there was no manicured lawn, the grounds around the house and fort were probably maintained. My grandmother here on the South Plains at that time period swept her yard and around the stables almost daily to keep weeds, snakes etc at bay. A good job for the kids with no shoes too.

Thanks MAG, great video. Having been raised not far from Sumner, the landscape being the same, I would never go barefooted even around well trodden ground of our homestead, just asking for trouble for the feet. If BTK was in fact barefoot, as some have suggested, he was probably already in the house. Also, one thing that’s always bugged me and make me shake my head in disbelief is, Garrett stating he was sitting on his holster when the kid entered the room. Who sits on their holster? Your work MAG is very much appreciated!

I am very interested in Wild West History. I actually came to know about these historical individuals like Bully the Kid, Jesse James, the Erps, Black Bart etch thanks to the Lucky Luke comics with which I grew up. Many of them participated in Lucky Luke episodes and at the end of each volume there was a photo or something similar and a small text talking about them. I got interested in Billy the Kid and started searching about him online as a free time activity. Very nicely done. Well done. The part of the final steps combined with the music you used was actually emotional.

Hi, I'm kinda in the shadows of the Billy the Kid community, but I've been interested in his story for quite some time. Don't usually comment on videos or anything, but this video is interesting and got me thinking. I do believe Billy the kid is more than likely buried there in Fort Sumner, but I never bought Pat Garrett's story, at least not all of it. Always felt something was off. Never thought of what you said though... that maybe he was already in the Maxwell house that night. Perhaps, like somebody said already in the comments, he was asleep when Pat killed him. Or perhaps, he was woken up and he was killed, which would make sense why his shoes were off. But yeah, something really doesn't add up. If I could go back in time to see what really happened, I definitely would. Anyway, thank you for the video. I got an eerie feeling from it like others did. Makes me want to go to Fort Sumner even more. I actually have been watching your videos when I can, and I just realized I haven't subscribed... which I will do now lol.

I have to agree with you about him being bare footed. Even if it were just dirt, most wouldn't walk out side without shoes. Snakes, ants, horse poop ect. Lucien called Billy a son, Paulita said Billy was like a brother, so I would think Billy was in the main house. Garrett may have went I quietly and shot Billy where he was sleeping. You mentioned a feeling you had, I have had a strange feeling everytime I have been there too. Like something just isn't right about any story I have ever heard told. Sometimes I think maybe Billy wasn't killed that night. Or maybe he wasn't killed in that spot. I don't know why but I don't think Garrett told the story honestly. Great job filming the walk! Brought back many memories. Hoping to make it back there some day. Looking forward to the other things you filmed.

Billy was most definitely killed that day. Ambushed and shot in the dark is more like it. If he heard the Kids voice from outside talking to the two deputies. Garrett would of had his gun caulked and ready. He even said, he made up his mind he was going to have to kill him after he escaped in Lincoln. Make no mistake, the whole town saw him dead. I think it's eerie just because it was a Wild West fort at one time, and now it's completely vanished, lost in time.

Dang, Michael. That was intense. Both your description of the strange reluctance you felt and the view of the final walk itself. The thing about Billy's story is that, whatever one thinks of his actions and certain choices he made, the first hand accounts of what an intelligent, friendly and popular young lad he was makes one wish he had been given a chance to grow into a full life without so many storm clouds tossing lightning at his every footstep. We know he tried to lead a more normal life, working for an honest wage for John Tunstall. He put himself at great risk to testify against the mob that owned not only Lincoln, but much of New Mexico from the Territorial Governor on down, in the form of the Santa Fe Ring. The mob was more powerful than any empty promise from the newest Governor, who in all probability intended to deceive Billy from that first meeting. Billy may have participated in killing for retaliation, in an atmosphere where there was no legitimate law. He certainly killed in self defense. But most every time he killed in cold blood- if one wants to see it like that- it was because he was in a situation where it was kill or be killed. I apply that argument not only to the Bell and Olinger killings but the Morton and Baker killings as well. (Ask McCloskey about that!) Billy's story, the more one is immersed in it, proves to be one of a young man who never was allowed a chance to escape the forces turned against him. If, as is most likely, he indeed died that night in Ft. Sumner, it was a destiny he was given little if any choice in. If not there, if not then, it would only have come some other time and place. He remains the only participant in the Lincoln County War that was held accountable, despite the endless list of crimes committed by men far more deserving of death than Billy.

The thing that caught my attention is why would BTK speak Spanish to white men. He had to know they were white men when he walked by them. The town being so small and nobody else saw these unfamiliar men standing outside. It just seems like someone would have let BTK know there were strangers in the town. I think BTK was killed that night but not like the story was told. Chano Silva said garret was hiding underneath a cot on the porch. It makes me think Maxwell had someone go and get the kid for reasons I don't know. I think he was set up and ambushed.

Very good point! If Billy did speak Spanish to them, he was probably just seeing if they understand Spanish, and could not tell if they were Mexican or white in the dark. Once he found out they were white, Garrett was waiting there for him and just unloaded on him, ambushing in the dark. If Billy had a gun, Garrett had his ready and caulked, because the Kid was faster than anyone.

Oh my goodness Michael, that made me feel so emotional and sad 😢 I got goosebumps too! I think Billy was staying at the Guteirrez's place earlier that night and went up to the Maxwells' to be with Deluvina (just my personal opinion)... as far as Deluvina being thirty-five...or younger, and Billy being twenty-one, his mother Katherine was thirty-six when she became involved with William Antrim who was twenty-three. Paulita's mother lived there in the house...no way my daughter would have had a guy sneak into her room when she was sixteen! (especially in hispanic culture) also, Paulita appeared motionless when staring down at Billy's corpse that surprised Poe. What I would give to read that letter Billy received in jail from a Miss Maxwell. Was it signed by her first name or an endearment? In all the love letters I have written, there have been a few lol...I've never put my name...always an endearment. Have now read different versions about "that romantic kiss" Billy gave Paulita (they had to be broken apart) not sure it isn't made up. Billy gave a tin type to Deluvina, and that is where I think Paulita saw it (to later comment how unflattering it was)...Deluvina possibly showed it to her. Billy WAS in the Maxwell house imo. I think he left Deluvina's bedroom (the house looks like it has a wraparound porch with doors opening onto the porch/walkway) he's walked along the porch in socks, no shirt and no gun.. maybe going to cut some meat or relieve himself? (doing up his pants?) Garrett is waiting for him in ambush! Garrett told Poe he knew the location of a certain house occupied by a woman in Fort Sumner which the kid frequented, and that he would most likly be found entering or leaving. Also, Maxwell was terrified of Billy! Another weird thing? Poe said, "After some forceful persuasion, that we induced Maxwell to procure a light, which he finally did, by bringing a candle from his mother's room at the FAR END OF THE BUILDING."Whaaat? That was the closest candle?..that doesn't add up either? So much of Poe's account doesn't add up.. just like Garretts! Imo Poe lied for Garrett! His boss and fellow lawman. Also, Deluvina screamed at Garrett "You didn't have the nerve to kill him to his face!" I keep getting the feeling Garrett shot Billy in the back! (or she meant in the dark?) same thing. Poe, Garrett, Maxwell and McKinney all lied imo. One big cover-up! Thanks so much for doing that Michael, I can tell it was difficult for you to do and really, really appreciate it. ❤🤠

Maybe the parade ground, and the area had grass. The terrain could have been different, since Maxwell's house was the Officers Quarters, then a sheep and cattle ranch. It was probably greener in my assumption. It was a little town that was most likely landscaped to a degree. But, I agree, he was probably ambushed. McKinney and Poe didn't look like Mexican sheepherders, Billy would have known they were not from around there and would have tried to escape or shot them. He was already ambushed twice by Garrett's Posse.

I have to disagree about the landscape as the place at that was being in lived in and the area had been used for years as a military post with lots of foot traffic. It would have been just dirt roads, paths and void of plants unless they were growing right up against a building.

We have a romantic notion of the old west.....as if the towns looked like they do in the movies. Lacking sewers animal and human waste often ran down ditches in the street, hence the need for wooden walkways. Scorpions, tarantulas, snakes, stickers, and biting ants certainly weren't an invention of the past 100 years. I wasn't there so I don't know.....but I'd bet that the parade ground and walkways around Fort Sumner then were no more hospitable then the maintained ground now.

I agree with you Tom. Not only did the Loving Goodnight trail go through their, but it was pretty much the last town heading east until Texas. I doubt Billy the Kid was concerned about creepy crawlers at that point in his life. He was looking for mankillers, and him the prime target. Sumner was so worn down by the foot traffic. It was Bosque Redondo, soldiers, natives, Travelers from the east, that town was the typical Old West fort town. With all the workers working for Maxwell, in front of his house and all sides would be worn down from people and horses. Ants and creep things only come back to life when all the big creatures that can stomp them to death have been gone for awhile. That's how Bermuda grass grows as well. Once the real grass dies, Bermuda takes over in the desert.

Why would garrett NOT take the boots off billy? It was his insurance that Billy wouldn't escape if he was still alive!?

You often say you don't believe in... ghosts. Spirits. The supernatural. But... you have experienced these things and written about them. You work hard to find a logical explanation or adamantly deny you 'believe' despite your instinct. Your gut feelings. Your intuition. It's all real and it's all right there whether you are ready to accept it or not. I know you don't want to be perceived as some 'loony' who is a ghosthunter, but... deep inside, just admit to yourself that none of us knows everything. Just a friendly thought from someone who lived the struggle between intellect and instinct. They are NOT mutually exclusive. P.S. He was inside and didn't have his boots on for a reason.

I'm not worried about what anyone might think of me. I've had a number of experiences that I cannot explain.....but I just don't see a connection to some other world or reality. I wouldn't at all mind if there was, and to be honest, when I'm in these situations I always say "show me, communicate with me....I'm not afraid and I don't mean anyone any harm." So far, no one has answered. I realize I don't know everything (in face, most of my viewers thing I don't know anything!).....but I'm open to the possibility.....I just need more than I've seen.

Melissa, why do you only provide information from the spirit world and no concrete facts or proof? Things, pictures, anything that can really be proven? You squirm like a snake when I ask about pictures and say: "Of course I can fix it, but it will be next year"......😒 What you write can be made up by anyone, even Brushy Bluff had a good try!!🤣

I have never believed the story of his death. To me I just can't rap my head around Garrett killing him. I believe they were close. I do believe Garrett wanted fame and Billie didn't want his notoriety. So I believe they planned it like a way to full fill Garrett's wish of being famous and Billie's wish to start over. The only part I can't get is the body unless it was someone that already was dead. Bc I can't see Billie having an innocent person killed to fulfill the plan. But I could be wrong Garrett might have been eager enough for notoriety to kill a friend in some ambush or trick. I don't really believe the Brushy Bill stuff. Honestly if Billie got out alive I don't believe he is any of the people that has been suggested. To me I believe he lived his life out somewhere in Mexico and never mentioned it to anyone that would tell who he was. I know even in modern times now. Some people are well liked in an area and people would never give them up. I know the town I am from a guy that got in trouble some but was loved by everyone but the police and the state police who didn't really know him came looking for him at a bar and not a soul told who he really was. And I feel the body witnesses just went with the story to help Billie escape. And then maybe some did talk years later but the Billie the kid story had lost traction until what 40 years after his supposed death. So even the ones that did talk the story just didn't go far and became rumor after they were dead and gone. That's my thoughts.

I also heard that one of the men that was with Pat Garrett that night he supposedly shot and killed Billy the kid also stated that the man he shot was not Billy and that years later he was forced to change his story.
