I know, right. From an annual GDP growth rate of 8.3% in 2017, India's economic growth rate in the first quarter (Jan-Mar) of 2020, has almost gotten halved, down to 4.2%. This downwards trend has continued for the past 3 years, but to no avail. The Govt. & Media are totally silent on this.

While countries like Vietnam & Bangladesh grew with rates of 7% and 8% respectively in 2019, India has been slowing consistently, being at 5% in 2019. India is also running out of time, because our economic growth window ends in 2050, and so the more time we lose, the lesser we will be able to develop at the end of it.

People of India really need to stop squabbling about useless issues like Hindu-Muslim or Mandir-Masjid etc. but should rather focus on the economy, development, education & healthcare. Back in 1990, the economies of both India & China were roughly in the same condition, around 350 Billion USD each, but now, in 2020, China's economy is a whopping 14 Trillion USD, while India's economy is a mere 3 Trillion USD. (I used "mere" since look at this figure relative to population)

One of the most powerful and significant episodes of Walk the Talk show. This short 15 minutes sums up the success story of the liberalization of India and the great economic power that India has since become. Here MMS details the difficult decisions that had to be taken and the fierce opposition that they feared. MMS has had the privilege of having a rare perspective of the Indian economy because of his having risen from the ranks of bureaucracy. When he took over the reins of the finance ministry, he had already had the experience of heading the Reserve Bank as its governor. Thus a perfect blend of the executive, legislature and the political office was found in the personality of MMS. The snippet from 08:25 to 13:15 details how tough decisions were taken and also proves the power of executive action circumventing the unjust intervention of the parliament. How much can be achieved by the executive backed by a sympathetic bureaucracy ! A minority government, an unsympathetic parliament and a looming economic disaster - a perfect recipe for disaster. But then how the tables were turned! This proves that an effective executive backed by an efficient bureaucracy can with tact and quiet, firm actions overcome an unrelenting public opinion and the disadvantages of a minority government. But here a caveat is in place. Such firm actions should only be taken during an emergency which threatens national interests and not for political gains and as a means of preserving an unpopular government. This clearly establishes the PVN led government with MMS as its backbone as one of the most successful that independent India has produced- at least in the economic context . PVN could be called the second best prime minister next only to Nehru, who was another architect who shaped India's economic future in a different era and as a response to the economic compulsions of his times. But how beautifully the two sets of decisions taken in two entirely different contexts worked together in the end to produce stunning results. It is like reading a fiction where all the elements of a great story are woven together to produce a classic , only that in this case the story is one of the future of a nation consisting of one billion people. One could only hope that this miracle continues under the present Namo government and at the least , the present Namo government does not disrupt the well run,well oiled economic machinery for getting short sighted political gains. The future governments should continue this success story by timely responses to the ground realities and far sighted actions. Though it could be said that the decisions were thrust upon the PVN government of the 1990s by the stark economic realities of the times , but still a lesser government could have easily prevaricated and pushed India into an economic abyss. But that did not happen and an economic disaster was averted : Thanks to the bold actions of the PVN-MMS genius partnership.

I am filled with emotions, bitter and sweet, while watching this talk. Here is one of the finest economists, scholars, teachers of India. The only thing that prevented him from being the finest prime minister was Sonia Gandhi. If only he was allowed to make all the decisions during his time. I despise the congress leadership of today for forsaking talent and the country for petty interests. The congress, as it exists today, needs to perish. This is not the congress which pandit nehru or patel ji were a part of. This is not the party which provided the administrative setup for us to achieve independence. This is a bunch of incompetent politicians concerned only with their petty interests.

It was Sonia Gandhi who offered him the top job. Sonia Gandhi could have easily become the prime minister. It was her generosity. Do you think a man of the stature of Dr Manmohan Singh would be under pressure from Sonia Gandhi? If that was the case, he could have resigned any time.

Its our duty to elect competent politicians. Don't be so pesimist becuase in a multiparty democracy we seldom get majority of competent people in a single party. Its better to start from our own constituency which will help parliament to do it right when it comes to chose the leader. It might take some time but it needs to happen this way. Thank you.

1991 reforms were the brain child of Manmohan Singh. Narasimha Rao made these reforms a reality. In short, formulated by Singh and effectively implemented by Rao.
