love your channel, I have been debating between an FJ/GX470 for while. Your videos are really pushing me towards the GX, really appreciate your research and realistic upgrades to make this truck a great daily and awesome weekend performer. This is great! Perfect for those of us just getting in to overloading. Its hard to know where to start. On all the forums and FB groups it can be information overload and a d*ck measuring contest.. biggest lift/biggest tires/etc... Your mixed use rig is exactly what I have in mind. 00:40 is EXACTLY the reason WHY I watch your channel, Sir. I LOL'd at the "STAGE 9- $10K Radflow C/O suspension set up" Hahahahaha!!! LOVE IT!!!! Loving the Mods(Especially the NinjaBatt. as well as the Platform, ala 4th gen. rear fold-down storage rack). As I mentioned before, "You are twisting my arm on that Tesla style Head Unit." lol When you were mentioning LCA, I was thinking about Whiteline. Awesome, tried/true company in the Subaru Community, so I 'm glad you went that route. Yep! Rocking the spacers on mine too. KDSS is a pro and con. it's hard to find sliders as easily but the wood interior looks so much better IMO.

Thanks for a great video! I just moved to Colorado Springs from Minneapolis to a very nice surprise. My 4th Gen 4Runner Sport was suddenly worth double compared to the Midwest market. I sold it in one day intending to buy a newer (hopefully rust free) one. I’ve always heard about these GX’s and was surprised they are so affordable. I guess it’s time for a change and I’m pretty excited! Love your advice cause I’m helping support my extended family so budget but quality it is. I also like the tall skinny tires for all the reasons you mentioned plus they are better in snow and my first 4Runner (an 84 from 84-90 w/22R & 5spd) in San Diego & Baja was a beast! Finally it will be a whole lot easier to convince the missus to buy this beauty....she took her 08 Prius to Breckinridge the other day and I guess it struggles a bit going up the mountains! 😎

Yes! My wife has a Ct200h (Lexus Prius essentially) and I get terrible gas mileage but combined we’re not bad. 😂

GX Overland at 51k just out of warranty transmission went out. So I paid to overhaul.. drove it another year and it died and camshaft gave errors. I was f d up with all the issues I was having, water pump, tie rod ends, etc. I have over 12k in mods and didn’t think it would last l. So I fixed tranny under warranty and did an even trade at local Lexus dealer for the GX. That was my 6th Jeep and the quality was horrible compared to my previous Jeeps as far as reliability is concerned. A tranny should not go out at 51k with zero towing etc. I had Jeeps go 150k with towing popups etc with zero issues. And I am so glad I made the change. Starting over kinda of a bummer as I was pretty much done with my Jeep. But at least I have some piece of mind as to the quality and longevity of this Lexus. Previously owned a 2010 Tundra and had zero issues for the entire time I owned it with hard use. Also drove many a Land Cruiser while deployed with military with zero issues in some sketchy areas with very hard use. So happy i made the switch and only way I will get rid of this is to upgrade to a Land Cruiser.

512 TXS yeah I loved my Jeep, but it was nothing but issues. Probably get an LJ to make another rock crawler at some point. Maybe I had a lemon, or it was made on a Monday or a Friday ...

I don’t think you necessarily need it unless it is rubbing or you cannot get your alignment set. I waited until I needed to do the bushings and just upgraded instead of going OEM.

Claudio Jimenez What sort of issues are you having? Seized calipers? Typically, what fixes it is using the GX 460 calipers, pads, and rotors.

Great set up mate, I have a V8 4x4 as well which I bought at end of last year. I havent put any mods on it yet but I am approaching the build with the same attitude as you have, only the necessities. At this stage Im planning for a: 2in lift, 285/70r18 nitto ridge grapplers, wheel carrier and a dual battery system. Im not putting on a bar and winch for the moment (because it affects driving dynamics) but Ill avoid driving at dawn and dusk to reduce the risk of hitting a kangaroo. Im a big fan of the lexus GX series, LX470 here in Australia. You guys are lucky in the US with have access to so many different V8 4x4s. In Australia, diesel is the most popular. There is only a handful of v8 4x4s with the rest being little 4 banger turbo diesels. Looking forward to your trips.

I’m considering buying a GX myself. How does it run at 155k miles? The one I’m looking at has 165k and that makes me a little nervous...

Dylan Robinson - if regular maintenance performed (fluids, filters, timing belt every 90k) the 4.7 is easily a 500k or more motor and the transmission likewise is trouble free if you change the fluid. It’s one of the most reliable power trains out there.

The company is a little iffy. I do think they're trying their best but are just way too understaffed and not very organized. I just got it from them because they're like 30 minutes from me. I got new customized firmware from a developer and it's AMAZING. Check out my other video for more info on it.

I'm in Houston and last year inquired about a suspension lift for 33" tires with lower ratio differential gear sets, rear bumper & tire carrier, front offroad bumper, roof rack and slide running board all for a whooping $25k+. I'm now considering doing all this work myself with some extra pair of hands. I'll keep searching for you KZfaq videos, By the way, did you replace the differential set gear with the 33" tires?

So glad to hear! You totally can do all this yourself. I never changed out the differential gear for 33‘s. Maybe if I went to 35s.

Great video. Love your setup. I’m currently building a coastal off-road front bumper for mine. Questioning wether I should do a winch or suspension next. I’m worried about going out wheeling/overlanding without a winch. What’s your thoughts?

I would do suspension first. Get some cheap recovery gear like a snatch strap and recovery boards. Go with someone else when going Offroad and they're your winch. :)

Absolutely. Obviously there’s a lot of variation but tires were about 200 apiece. Wheels I got as blemish items but they looked perfect to me. I think they were 600 for five of them. Pretty great discount. The suspension is right around 1000.

My concern would either be something catching your rear bumper or hitting something underneath. I will consider skid plates personally. Unless you don’t really Rock crawl much

Not a bad setup to start with! You seemed to have it streamlined. How are the Dobson's suspensions for overlanding? I've heard that they're really good, but I was considering some Bilstein's... The 6112's in the front and 5160's in the rear with Eibach rear springs! I'm searching for ultimate durability! Have not bought anything yet, but will soon!

I bought a 2003 a couple weeks ago with 117k miles on it. I'm IN LOVE with the GX470 now. I've owned 3rd, 4th and 5th gen 4runners and still have the 5th Gen. Hands down the GX470 is the best vehicle I have ever owned and is the best SUV I've owned with the 4th Gen 4runner in second. I am so torn on lifting it etc. because it is just so good as a daily driver. It's so quiet and smooth on the Nokian HT tires it came with. So, I have to ask..... What is the ride like after the suspension swap and AT tires? I too am a tall skinny tire guy and had good luck with the Jeep 255/70r17 on the 4th gen. with a 2.5" lift and would probably go that route with Wildpeaks or Nokian AT's. Luckily my GX doesn't have KDSS. Keep up the good work on the videos brother. I don't think you need the disclaimer either. Your editing is just fine and all that fancy stuff isn't necessary.

Thanks! From my experience, I love the ride. Inevitable failure will come with the airbag suspension on the GX. Might as well swap to a coil suspension and by that point might as well do a lift. There are several choices under $1000 for a comfortable solid lift. Dobinsons and Eibach are great starting points. Are you planning on going off-road at all? If not, just keep it as is and enjoy it.

@@GXOverland I plan on a mixed use very similar to you. I might just build the Lexus out and turn the 4runner into a more commuting vehicle. lol..... Take the at's off and get a more highway tire. It already pulls about 18.5mpg mixed and I know it could do better. The lift on my 4th gen was a pretty good ride.

I just used what they sent me. Negative to the body and positive to the battery. Switch inside the cab.

I’m new to these trucks I’m looking at them what’s the difference between the 470 and 460? Is it like bmw and such where the higher number is more options in the same line? Like a 318 is a 3 series but has less options and smaller engine than a 325?

The 460 is the newer model that has the 4.6 L engine. Personally, I prefer the bulletproof Toyota 4.7 L in the GX 470. Also, I personally like the body styling of the 470 as it feels more like an SUV but that’s personal preference.
