As a survivor of multiple home renovations I would suggest that you fix up the studio as a guest house area and the pottery as a storage area. The storage so you can pack out all non essential things from your current house (the last move will bee much smoother that way) and the guest area means that the family can live there on the weekends and you can tackle prep work for the house and yard between different workparties arriving during the week.

I live in south MS, if he turns that into a guest house area I may need to rent out that room for a couple of weeks during the winter! His property is absolutely beautiful and since we don't get snow here it'd be a great place to escape from the wife for a couple weeks.

Good idea to keep the heavy/big stuff trimmed back, at minimum. We call them "lightning rod" around here. I don't think I've seen one over two feet in diameter that hasn't been hit and split open. That said, they must be good for something, I've seen them harvested.
@Robb403

Yup. We have them where I live and they grow fast and huge and then they just suddenly split or snap off in a windstorm. They uproot pretty easily also.

At least you have a sawmill to repair all those fences. When you finally start excavating for your new shop don't forget to dig out an extra area for a storm shelter and a root cellar. Maybe bury 1 or 2 containers behind back wall of lower level of shop. 1 for food and 1 for shelter, you never know when you might need it out in farm country with wind storms.

I would too, radiant heat and insulation, it would be a dream shop. I'd be an upgrade in size anyways from his previous shop. The best compromise would maybe be to have the tools and everything in the garage whilst the renovation of the house and barn is ongoing, and when the barn is ready you install the shop there.

Matt, in the garage/new shop, you can extend the garage door tracks to go all the way up to the ceiling. That gets the garage doors inches from the ceiling in the open position, instead of hanging 2 feet down into the room as they do currently. It would also make room for dust collection tubing or anything else. Just an idea!

KInd of awesome that you can carry two properties. There have been moments over the years when I've been somewhat envious of rural properties, but circumstances were never such that moving was an option. And now, at this point in the game (of life) my wife and I are here for the duration. Our property is a sort of suburban location where the houses were built in the late fifties and early sixties, and having a large lot was the "thing" at the time. Now, you're lucky to get a postage stamp around here. On a slightly different note, the snow was kinda freakin' me out. I'm in Canada, but we don't have any snow here YET. Our turn will come, but it's just been dull and raining whenever the skies decide to be miserable. Hopefully it'll melt again where you are. Carry on!
