Warning ⚠️ these dream detecting days are NOT NORMAL - Roman finds - coins and artefacts!!!
Join me as I close the end of my first year as a beginner in metal detecting with a January road trip to Roman territory! I’ll continue my exploration of a new UK permission and get to know the land through finds. My usual mix of history, nature, outdoors and searching. 😊 Plus, I test out a homemade surveying method using builders line.
SPOILER ALERT - MORE ancient Roman finds are made!
What to do next - part two IS COMING TONIGHT! also, SUBSCRIBE the hell out of this channel and set an alert because I post whenever there’s something great to share! 🎥

A bit about me:
Not your average bloke in camo..
Hello! I’m Ellie, English female detectorist, beachcomber, mudlark and artist. 🇬🇧 Follow my searching journey metal detecting the UK countryside and shoreline, as I learn about British history through objects.
Have I found any treasure? Well - I’ve really been putting in the time, and in my first year of detecting I have collected Roman artefacts, old gold, hammered coins and medieval finds. But the REAL treasure is in the stories each object tells about people and places. Sometimes it’s the mystery objects that I love best - cracking the code of time with plenty of help from my team of trusty subscribers!

Great video. Your enthusiam is wonderful. A sugeestion if I may be so bold. If you were to place three lines down rather than two you can, once you walked the first section move the first one and walk back doing more detecting and then move the first and second one over when you get back to the side you started on. Would save quite a bit of time.

I did think of three lines but got my head in a knot trying to suss out how I’ll move them 😅 I might try it - I also need way longer lines!

nice technique, try to direct your strings perpendicularly, so you'll detect 90°, you'll find some more stuff. I did that (without stings) on a roman patch, I maybe found 10 coins on one direction and 5 on the 90° afterwards

Ellie, i perfected a slightly different method in ensuring all the field is covered and my method by using poles. As i pass them each, i move it arms reach across. Negates the hassle of collecting hundreds of yards if string afterwards. I perfected this method at my daughters farm. Congratulations on your amazing finds. Roman onew elude me still and i live in roman rich notth Essex

It’s a good idea and definitely something I’ll try. But for this particular Roman permission I like the lines as it doesn’t rely on any guesswork /eye work at all. It’s complete coverage and I can go a whole length or two without changing anything and really get into the zone!

Wow! I believe I’d have a hard time having to leave a field like that. Such beautiful and amazing finds. I love the orange string to sort of grid your path of detecting. I’m sure the more experienced detectorists would think it’s not needed, but on a field with so many finds, I can see how it would keep you from wobbling along and veering all over place. It’s a much more disciplined and efficient way to search and I think it’s very smart. I know you’ll find so many more lovely and historic finds. I honestly do not think I’d have the self control to do much else but be on that field all the time. Job be damned. Get back out there ❤

Absolutely brilliant opportunity you have here. You need to weigh up your options. Do you attempt to “empty” it it as quickly as possible or enjoy the possibility of finding something lovely every time you go? I have a similar field with hammered coins in it, I stopped accurately gridding it and now enjoy walking over it with high expectations knowing I haven’t had everything out. Wonderful problem to have! 👍

Great video and very nice learning technique. Utterly jealous over those finds. Just a bit of advice as far as your nosebleeds go if I may? Either sit down or stand with your head bent slightly forward. Don't tip your head back as that can cause blood to run down your throat and cause choking or get in your belly and cause nausea. I'm fairly new to detecting but I've been a nurse for over 20 years! Happy New Year and happy detecting!

Hey Wayne I'm afraid it's a question of being patient and good things will come. If you're new and not sure about your detector I suggest join a group, or look out someone on YT that uses the same model and see if you can pick up some settings tips and even ask a few questions. FB is another good place with groups specific to most detector brands. In terms of where to find Roman, how we all wish we could know! But there are a few techniques for assessing your permission for historical activity and I am planning a vid based on what I've learned about this so keep watching here and thanks for your question!
