Join me as I try and seek out the perfect photograph of the Sun setting behind the silhouette of Snowdon, from 40 miles away on the Horseshoe Pass in Llangollen!
I had seen this view occur, 7 years ago and its an occurence that only happens on 2 days of the year, one evening in March and again in September, due to the position of sunset changing every day. It was an absolute privelege to be able to see it again.
Let me know if you liked the video & photographs!

Excellent video Joss, you got some superb shots there of the sunset over Snowdon and Iconic mountains pointed out to, the sky colors just Beautiful, Glad that fire was a controlled one we have had to many wild fires over the last few years dont need no moor, what camera did you use Joss and what settings as I am trying to learn a bit about photography at the moment,Cheers mate, ATB, Les.
@jossthomas123456
@jossthomas123456 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Les, glad you enjoyed it. The camera is a Canon 500d which is quite old now but still does the business. The main settings were ISO 100 to get the best picture quality, F.8 which is a good aperture for sharp pictures and a fast shutter speed of about 1/1000 because the scene was so bright. Having a tripod is essential. I adjusted the settings as the sun went down. Yes it was good news that the fire was only a controlled one. I was worried it was the start of another bad one. Thanks for watching, atb Joss

Lovely Joss, nice little hike up the top, do they do controlled burns up on the hills? Fantastic images mate. Enjoyed it. Lee Ahh, just watched the bit about the controlled burn, they do them down here on Ashdown Forrest.
@jossthomas123456
@jossthomas123456 5 жыл бұрын
Nice one Lee thanks for watching. Yes the controlled burning is to encourage new shoots to grow, so that the Grouse and other Game Birds get to feed. Shooting Grouse is big business in these parts. Im always sceptical when a hill fire gets out of control (last years one was described as a freak accident) but it does make you wonder if its controlled burning getting ‘out of control’.
@BurtonOutdoors
@BurtonOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
@@jossthomas123456 if you remember my silent viddy a few weeks back, there was a controlled burn just about 400m from my spot the day after I was there... got out of hand and 7 fire engines required to put it out!! The forest rangers took their eye off the ball due to wind direction apparently! So yes controlled burns are sometimes not always controlled. Lee

Absolutely brilliant shot at the end. Was surprised that was Y Garn though? I would have suspected this to be obstructed by Tryfan from your angle? I see the undeniable silhouette of Y Lliwedd on the left (I will be climbing her again in 5 days time). Moel Siabod is also on my "to do" list in the near future. That photo at the end needs to be enlarged, printed and mounted on your wall mate! Love your videos. Love your enthusiasm.

LordHeath1972 thanks mate. Yes in hindsight there is a chance you might be right, It could be Elidir Fawr. Will have to go back with some Binoculars. It will definitely be getting printed, that was one of the objectives, to get a decent photo that could be enlarged👍👍👍 was a cracking night.

@@jossthomas123456 Mate, absolutely not any criticism whatsoever here, but do you think it is possibly Pen yr Ole Wen? It looks the right shape and is in the right spot next to Tryfan? I think Elidir Fawr would be way, way in the distance and again shielded by the shadow of that monster Tryfan? I am familiar with those mountains and Y Garn is more pointed. Like I said, no criticism of you, nor me wanting to sound like I know it all, but just throwing it out there for you to consider? I looked also at Google Earth 3D and drew back to roughly the distance and geographical position you would have been standing and it adds up in being Pen yr Ole Wen... a mountain I know you have one up on me over because I need to climb her and you already have done so!
@jossthomas123456
@jossthomas123456 5 жыл бұрын
LordHeath1972 no offence/criticism taken mate, its good to chat about these things. I don’t think its Pen Yr Ole because from where I was standing its about the same distance away yet it looks shorter than Tryfan in the image, when in fact its a higher mountain. Of course, Ive got the benefit of the original photo here so I can zoom in on them. I will do a bit more digging and see what the answer is! I think Pen might have just been out of shot but I will have a look at the out takes. I would have expected it to look a lot longer from where I was because its connected on one side to Carnedd Dafydd & Llewelyn etc

@@jossthomas123456 It's amazing that this was the last thing I looked at on the internet before I went to bed last night and it was STILL buzzing in my head about that mystery mountain! Wow, your image had that much of an impact. Anyway, Y Garn...... that little pointed thing right at the right-edge of the photo might actually be her, because she does have that sort of shape. But given that Y Garn is relatively close to Glyder Fawr, which you list to the left of the monster (Tryfan) I would still be surprised to discover that Y Garn is the mystery mountain because I just think the angle is wrong and the relative distance from the Glyders is just too far. Also, Pen yr Ole Wen would look smaller than Tryfan from your angle because she lies behind Tryfan. Really looking forward to your definitive answer on this! I will check back later. Peace.
@LordHeath1972
@LordHeath1972 5 жыл бұрын
Actually looking at it again I think Y Garn may be the one between Glyder Fawr and Tryfan - that would actually make sense. And the one you labelled as Y Garn I would hazard a bet that it is Pen yr Ole Wen. Looking forward to seeing your verdict mate.
