Join me for a truly epic wildcamp in the abandoned Dinorwic Slate Quarry in Snowdonia. I explored the old ruined buildings and site workings before spending the night on one of the higher levels. It was an amazing experience.
I also tried an MRE American Military Ration Meal.

A lovely video Joss. Nothing moves me more than the sights of Dinorwig Quarry. It is a visual epitaph and historical testament to the tenacity of Welsh working quarry men. I remember my Taid speaking of the strike and its cause and how collections where made from a variety of union members across the country to aid and support the depraved quarry men's families through the troubles. It is the acts off welsh miners and quarry men who's unity assisted the evolution of safer working environments and the political and ethical movement to create standards of occupational health & safety within industries. I'm proud to say firstly I was born Welsh and secondly to embrace & celebrate the history and culture of Wales and its people !

Joss, this video popped up and it's one of yours that I've not seen. Your passion for Snowdonia and North Wales is fantastic and your videos really capture the atmosphere of the area. I really like the music that you use too. Having watched this tonight, I'm really looking forward to getting back out in the Clwydians and Snowdonia and indeed, looking forward to seeing some uploads from you as restrictions are lifted and you can get back out. Keep up the great work. Alan

Not sure if you'll see this comment as the video is 2 years old, but my grandad and uncle once wild camped here, in one of the old mine buildings, and at night thought they could hear slate being moved or broken. Could've been sheep, but it scared them enough not to come back there to camp!

That was interesting Joss. Interestingly, I was up there a month ago and visited that Caban at the top which does indeed contain old miners clogs and bits and bobs. Its obviously used as a bothy as there's a stove in there and people are obviously staying there. I was with the climber John Redhead which as you've climbed you will have heard of as he made some of the hardest routes of the day in the quarries. He showed me an interesting way to the caban. We squeezed down a narrow gap as the base of a cliff which came out into a tunnel. That in turn led to-I think it was the Australia quarry?- From there it was a long scramble over huge blocks. Eventually we reached the final two tiers where the fun really begins! Old rusty ladders are bolted into the sheer walls. The final tier requires you to step across from one ladder to another which is at 90o degrees to the one you are on. The top ladder has missing supports and is tethered by an old climbing rope so it twangs as you climb it. At one stage I put my foot on a rung...which wasn't there!. As you are several hundred feet above the quarry floor its 'interesting! When you emerge at the top you are a few feet from the top caban. There's an easy way up/down which we went down which has a name which sounds like something from Lord of the Rings? Just a long walled incline. If you've climbing experience you'd enjoy what I called 'the rusty ladders of death!' I though it might make an interesting vlog. Sending up the drone and filming an ascent of said ladders looking down. So you get the full impact of the exposure.Might do it on a good day.

I did film a short piece to camera about Johnny Dawes’ The Quarryman’ but then edited it out as I thought it might be boring for the non-climbers. I will go back to find the Caban. I didn’t realise that people were kipping there. Theres a link up of features called ‘Snakes and Ladders’ graded at HVS I believe..? Thanks for watching, atb Joss

@@jossthomas123456 I hope not, hadn't noticed that. To be fair to those who made the video, they did not start the fire. I had planned to camp there last week but was too ill, I'd rather visit and hike bow than camp there, those who mad ethe video said there were at least 14 other tents there. Re the disco in the mess hall (or any other late loudness) I'd be very worried about what would happen if a fracas escalated. I've seen a video on Cader Idris where some more hedonistically inclined campers plaid loud music until 5am. No idea what the solution is. Luckily there are loads of other places to camp, but it's a shame that I might never camp there.
