Fascinating and valuable video as always. I attended George Mitchell school from 1964 to 1969 Then it was a Secondary Modern school for boys. George Mitchell has the sad but proud distinction of having a VC holder from both world wars. Jack Cornwall at Jutland, and George Mitchell, killed I believe in the Italian campaign in WW2. Sadly both VC's were awarded posthumously. At the time these brave lads attended the school I believe it was called Farmer Road School. George Mitchell was member of the London Scottish Regiment and a link between the regiment and the school was established after the school was renamed in his honour at the end of the war. That link was still strong in my time, with a cadet unit based in the school and attached to the regiment. Every year an officer and a piper from the London Scottish would visit the school. We would assemble in the hall and the officer would read the citation describing how George Mitchell won the VC, which was very moving. The piper would then walk down the centre of the hall dressed in full regalia and playing a lament on the pipes. It left a lasting impression on me. I also remember a large framed reproduction of a marvellous painting of Jack Cornwall's heroic final heroic stand by his gun.

On the same day 72 years ago I took my first breath in Forest Gate hospital! Though it saddens me to see so much development, I cant help but be enthused by you acceptance and celebration that life and times move on. From Bronze Age tracks, to Roman roads and on to Leyton High road. There will come a time when another will look back and marvel at how Leyton looked in the old 2020's. As always you are a joy to listen to as you make your historical walks, and long may it be so. Incidentally, I have in my loft the original 1860's atlas that Madame Tussaud used on her traveling show throughout England before she set up business in Marylebone Road. When I get around to it I'll dig it out and send it to you. I think you'd appreciate it more than my loft does.

Thanks again John , although a Leytonstone boy through and through, I sure I told you before I went to George Mitchell school and both sets of grandparents lived in St Mary’s road , the park down the alleyway by George Mitchell school was called skeltons lane park when I was at school there, late 60’s . Anyway thanks again was a pleasant and a bit sad watching, and remembering the people who I was with in those days , my grandad , I will tell you about him one day , my dad who had a workshop in capworth Street , that burnt down , and my big brother, all gone now R.I.P. Thanks again John for seeing the beauty in the area that I loved

Yes I'm Leyton woman and wondered about that newly-named park. So who was Skelton then? A couple of years ago I walked past GM school. Went again a week later and it was a pile of rubble. So many trees in Leyton behind John.

Here’s a silly store. I had to go to that clinic around 1956 to see the dentist there and his advice was to keep my teeth clean and I would never have to see another dentist again. So at 71 with no filling or removals his diagnosis was true.

@@JohnRogersWalks It just shows you how times have changed in this country. Back then, those videos were openly available for sale to the general public over on the Continent, even in petrol stations, but here in the UK people were ducking and diving, trying to avoid the authorities trying to buy and sell a copy for an extortionate amount of money. And now these days, it's all free on the internet! *I remember an Oriental gentleman in the West End one night back in around 1988, trying to sell me a hard core porn video for £70.00. That's a lot of money these days, but back then, for some people that was like a weeks wages!!

Another fantastic film, it seems that so many of your films capture my life story documenting Leytonstone, Leyton, Epping Forest and the Lea Valley. I worked at Leyton bus garage during the time of the dispute between the then London Forest district and London Buses which culminated in London Forest being disbanded with half the garages going to Leaside district and the other half the then East London just prior to privatisation.

Very interesting! Your favourite building - the Health Clinic at Leyton Green - was where I used to go with my mum for free orange juice, given out to children in the early 1950's.. And just opposite where those flats are now was a nursery - I lasted one day there when I was young. My mum used to do cleaning jobs and being pre-school, I was a problem as not everyone was happy to have a child in their house and baby sitters where unheard of then and anyway, not affordable. She took me there once - I don't know what I did but I distinctly remember the lady in charge telling my mum when she came to pick me up that I didn't fit in with the other children and that she certainly couldn't ever bring me there again.

I lived around there not too long ago. Played for the pool team at Shoelaces before it turned into Pepper's Ghost. Before it's refurbishment, Leyton Leisure Centre was called Leyton Leisure Lagoon. It was so named because the council ran a competition for the boroughs schoolkids. An old mate of mine won it. The idea was that the name shouldn't be related to water, but he still managed to win with "lagoon".

There were actually 3 tower blocks on the Beaumont rd estate, All Saints tower, St Pauls Tower and St Catherines tower, all demolished now. As a fireman stationed at Leyton in the 1980s we used to attend all these three blocks on a regular basis, mainly shut in lifts and refuse chute fires and the occasional flat job, only had one fatality in my time there as far as I can remember.

A walk through my childhood...The flats and the Three Blackbirds? 1960s - That junction of Hainault Road and High Road used to have large advertising hoardings. Just back from that sat a mock Tudor house where the Smith family lived. Mr Smith - a local celebrity - was a scap metal dealer and drove a Ford Thunderbird. I went to school with his son. I lived opposite the Essex County Cricket ground. Freddie Truman used to park his Aston Martin (DB 2/4?) outside our home. Mobbed, he would never give autographs. Sainsbury's Local. There used to be a J Sainsbury up near the Library. Marble counters behind which staff would serve you. Vicarage Road. The encumbent of St Marys in the 1960s was Rev Denny. Wonderful man. Made national front page Sunday news by having a vasectomy. He let it be known. Quite a story for a vicar in 60s! The tower blocks. I remember them being built - and then the controversy of Ronan Point in 1968. Glad they are gone. Indeed, a magical walk.

John's wonderful and insightful walks through Leyton where I grew up... George Mitchell school when it was boys only, the nearby county grounds was where our sports were held. It was a typical tough EAST ENDER school and headmaster Mr. Bassett and his assistant Mr. McIntyre had cause to use the cane often...they were both good men and Mr. Bassett was the main reason we got to use the county grounds, as he was well respected by the local politicians. Nearby was Skelton's Lane Park as I remember it, and others commenting here, nothing like what it looks like today in John's video. I've been living in California now for some 44 years, but I'm glad I was born and raised in Leyton in the timeframe of 1954-1976...of course its all subjective, but the old saying of "you can't go home again" is true, not just for remembering how easy going life was then, but I'd be a total stranger/outsider there now. John's 'Walking Safari's' through London should be on TV, as the level of photography and his easy-going hosting style are just as engaging if not more so than what's currently on the telly. These are great time-capsules, made even better by those who comment like me with their unique and shared experiences of a Leyton/Leytonstone/Walthamstow from a different planet almost. In this dark age of COVIDism, this Alice In Wonderland meets George Orwell's 1984 meets Aldous Huxley's Brave New World madness, I'm so glad I'm the old age I am, and so thankful I can still remember the sights, the streets that John walks the way they used to be...

Hi John. You filming Leyton Mildland Rd station from outside Tony's Cafe brings back warm memories of a daily breakfast in that establishment. Then in the afternoon a cup of tea in the Welcome Cafe over the road. This must have been around 1980 to 82. Also funny you should mention the tower blocks on the Beaumont Rd estate. @@richardpicking4459 . Hi Richard. I'm still living in Buckhurst Hill with my wife. Approaching the big 70 in June but fit and well. 2 Children and 2 grandchildren. Enjoy my walking so really enjoy John's videos as I like to wander round London as well as further afield. They were happy days with great memories as I did enjoy my work then. What are you up to these days? Hope you are well and ok and not affected by this horrible virus. .

@@keithgodwin7021 Glad to read you are fit and well. Being doing a lot of walking myself lately out in the sticks as been living in Ongar for over thirty years. Little behind you as coming up 60 in August, four kids 27 down to 18 but no grandchildren. I left the industry back in 2002 and now run a fireplace business in Abridge. Pop in sometime (when allowed) for a coffee.

Thank you! I was trying to think of the pub in Leyton near the station where I went to a Sunday afternoon music event in the early 00's - after your mention of the Three Blackbirds I googled a photo and that was the place!

Hi Mark. My family lived in Peterborough Road too 😊........so nice to see it mentioned. Our house backed onto the grounds of Whipps X Hospital, but sadly that area has all been built on now. My sister and I went to Canterbury Road School, then later she to the Girls’ High School, and me to the Tech. I left the area in 1963. I loved my childhood there....it was great being so close to the forest, especially at a time when parents were quite happy for their children to take themselves off for most of the day to the forest to play, or the Lido for a swim!

No recollection of any O’s players coming out of George Mitchell around my time there, but notably two that were both goalkeepers,Les Sealey was the biggest success playing at his height for Man Utd and Perry Suckling who played for a poor Manchester City team, both played for several other clubs but not The Orient.

Very good walk John. I really enjoy seeing my old haunts but I only wish I had taken more interest in the more ancient history of the area when I lived in leytonstone. I never realised the Romans were there. Keep up the great work.

Hi John- I enjoyed " Walking with you" and going down memory lane the Leyton Green bus garage always impressed me when I was little. Any chance of a walk taking in the Leytonstone schools as in a selfish way I would love to see what has become of Cann Hall . Lakehouse and Tom Hood . Keep safe John...……………….Cheers Kev

thanks Kev, glad you enjoyed it. I think my next walk should take in Leytonstone School and I reckon I'll get to Cann Hall and Tom Hood (now called Buxton School) in the one after that. I reckon Lakehouse must also have changed its name, I'll find it what that's called now

Top man John . I think Cann Hall is now much smaller than when I was there and moved further up Cann Hall Road I think .When I went there it was a large school on the junction of CannHall Rd and Worsley Rd and extended to Selby/ Carey Road. Lakehouse may well have closed it was on Ramsey Road at the Wanstead Flats end with an Annex on Dames Road. One last indulgence would be a quick view of 136 CannHall Rd where I used to live and opposite a view of what was the Colgrave Arms Pub which was literally my local !!!!! Keep safe & well ………......……..Cheers Kev

Another great little walk, John. I try to picture Leyton Green in days long gone with perhaps sheep grazing by the village pond! I'm interested to know what kit you normally use - other than the phone 😉 - I think I've spotted a Panasonic Lumix occasionally reflected in shop windows and a mic hiding under a dead cat. Do you use any kind of gimbal or is the smoothness down to steady hands developed over many years of practice? Cheers 👍🏼

John. I went to school on the HMS Worcester at Greenhithe, you did a walk down there on Swanscombe flats. A relative of Jack Cornwell's was sent to that school because of his connection with Jack. Fred Cornwell, he was a bit iof a lad and got into a small problem with the magistrates so they sent him to the best nautical Training college in the world. They did that sort of thing back in more socialist times, Harold Wilson was PM.
