Walking my Service Dog: Off-Duty vs On-Duty! (with service dog tasking caught on camera)

Service dogs need to be very well behaved and highly trained, but when a service dog is off duty, they get to be normal dogs too! In this video, I take my service dog for 2 walks - first he is loose leash walking off duty, then he is walking in a heel on duty! You can see the huge difference in his behavior when he knows he is working.

My service dog Finley walks on a loose leash when off duty, can't pull or lunge toward distractions (she also loves to sniff) and waits for an okay command when she wants to go investigate things, but if she's on her longline or flexi she doesn't have to wait for me to okay her, she just needs to return when asked.

The "intelligent disobedience" part really struck me. It's crazy how service dogs can think for themselves and prioritize safety over their usual commands. Buddy is very smart!

Guide dogs do the same thing for their handlers. When a handler asks their dog to go forward across the street the dog is trained to refuse to go or to pull the person back if there is a car coming.

After raising Guide Dog puppies, the importance of intelligent disobedience carried over into my training of pet dogs. I have never demanded an instant non-thinking response from my dogs (or horses for that matter!) except for one emergency word. My pet dog knows she isn't allowed in the street, but one day while out front she ran across the street to the neighbor's because their toddler was running down the driveway. She placed herself between the toddler and the street like a wall. Now mom was just out of sight and we live on a quiet dead-end so there was really no danger for anyone, but it shows that dogs are alert and will respond when they know we trust them to make the right decision in the moment. She did go the long way on the sidewalk to come back home as well!

Buddy is so sweet, and you're hilarious! I love hearing about how other handlers give their dogs off duty time to just be dogs. Aries gets "freedom walks" where he can just wander around all over on a long line (we throw in some random heels and tricks in there too), then he can switch right into work mode when I switch leashes because he knows it's his "work leash" (has leash wraps on it). Watching Buddy actively task was awesome too, aren't dogs just so amazing?
@MommingwithMigraine

I just wrote a long reply and then my internet went out and it got lost... sigh. Thank you kindly and I'm glad you're getting some entertainment out of the videos. I love that your dog gets the difference between the leashes and it makes me so happy that he gets free time. It's so important, and they're sooooo smart. We throw in tricks too! He LOVES it!! It's great off-duty for attention and great on-duty for a break from holding an endless heel. I really appreciate your input on enjoying seeing him task. Sometimes it's hard to decide how much to leave in or take out, so the feedback is really helpful for future videos.

A very popular request, so I might get into some of that in a future video! Buddy was a natural alerter, so I'd have to talk about that secondhand. But I DID have to shape Bud's alerts to be more obvious and practical (he would very gently lick my clothes and I never noticed, so I taught him to nudge for it instead). So I can definitely talk about the shaping process, and of course also the public access training parts of it if that's something you'd intend to do. Some people keep their SD at home - for example when Bud was migraine alert only and gave many hours of notice, but wasn't fully trained for public yet, I'd just make sure to check back at home every few hours.
@capetownchicklet14

Momming with Migraine knowing how to shape alerts would be very handy! As would public access training honestly because I get scared to go out alone due to my “lovely” confusion and aphasia.

What an amazing dog! I’m currently teaching my 6yr old Rott Shepherd to do some “service” commands for my mom like retrieve things, help her get up (steady himself to allow her weight), help clean up sticks in the yard, carry things, etc. crazy how smart dogs are. ADOGSWORLD, I’ve been told that a dog can not be trained for both service and protection because if the owner needs help and someone tries to help, the dog may take that as a threat and go after the person trying to help. Do you know anyone that has trained a dog for both?

your reaction to buddy at the end really resonated with me on a personal level. there have been times when my assisting animal alerted me and i was initially annoyed at him for blocking me or breaking a sit/stay due to the situation (i.e "i feel fine right now!). it is not until after sitting or moving somewhere safer that i noticed the dizziness, then realize how i could have taken a nasty fall had he not kept nagging me that i was going to pass out. in any case, thank you for doing this video. it was very validating and helped me put this into perspective.

As a handler in between retired and prospect service dogs. I still am amazed at how amazing these animals are. One day, I was working at one of my works stores with my retired service dog. She was restless and we thought she needed to potty. Found out, she was disobedient for a medical reason. She saved me from falling and hitting my head from being at 150 bpm.

I'm getting my PTSD service dog puppy in five weeks, and I'm super excited! She's a little German Shepherd, but the service dog training is super expensive here. In Germany Service Dogs do not have special rights, like, they aren't generally allowed to go everywhere with you. So it's a lot of work to talk to everyone in every place you visit frequently. For example, I'm studying at univerity, and I had to ask every single of my professors, if my dog can come with me to Uni. Luckily i have the best profs ever, so they all were super excited to have a puppy in their lectures xD but because of the astronomical prices of the trainers, I decided to train my little puppy myself for the most part, and you are helping me so, so, so much with your videos about Buddy's training. I can learn a lot for the training with my puppy from you.

The ones I've seen have been so so happy, honestly! They love the structure and sense of purpose.

it's so nice to see a video like this because I feel like a lot of other handlers seem to neglect explaining this part of the training process. So many videos that I've seen only show the training and on-duty portions of service dogs (medical alert and otherwise) but this is one of the few that shows that the dogs are just 'tools' as it often seems from the outside looking in, if that makes sense.

I hope you mean AREN'T just tools! Buddy is absolutely part of the family and then some. Thanks for the feedback! Sincerely helps me out for future videos.

This is so amazing. We just got a Lab/German Shepherd and I have been looking for more training to do with her because she is so observant and needs a job. I didn't know some dogs could sense migraines. That could be really useful! Can't wait to poke around your channel some more.

Hey there Jen. Just wanted to let you know that I sent your video to the vet clinic where my Moses goes. They never really got it how my dog does medical alert. Your video nailed it! Good job girl!!

This is great! I am considering a service dog and I was also concerned about them having a “Normal” life too. Thank you for sharing!
