A walk through the Port Authority Bus Terminal in NYC during a weekday morning Rush Hour.
From Wikipedia:
"The Port Authority Bus Terminal (colloquially known as the Port Authority and in initials as PABT) is the main gateway for interstate buses into Manhattan in New York City. It is owned and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ). The bus terminal is located in Midtown at 625 Eighth Avenue between 40th Street and 42nd Street, one block east of the Lincoln Tunnel and one block west of Times Square. It is one of three bus terminals operated by the PANYNJ, the others being the George Washington Bridge Bus Station in Upper Manhattan and the Journal Square Transportation Center in Jersey City.
The PABT serves as a terminus and departure point for commuter routes, as well as for long-distance intercity routes, and is a major transit hub for New Jerseyans. The terminal is the largest in the United States and the busiest in the world by volume of traffic, serving about 8,000 buses and 225,000 people on an average weekday and more than 65 million people a year. It has 223 departure gates and 1,250 car parking spaces, as well as commercial and retail space. In 2011, there were more than 2.263 million bus departures from the terminal.
The PABT, opened in 1950 between 8th and 9th Avenues and 40th and 41st Streets, was built to consolidate the many different private terminals spread across Midtown Manhattan. A second wing extending to 42nd Street was added in 1979. Since then, the terminal has reached peak hour capacity, leading to congestion and overflow on local streets. As it does not allow for layover parking, buses are required to use local streets or lots, or return through the tunnel empty. The PANYNJ has been unsuccessful in its attempts to expand passenger facilities through public private partnership and in 2011, it delayed construction of a bus depot annex, citing budgetary constraints. In June 2013, it commissioned an 18-month study that would consider reconfiguration, expansion, and replacement options."

True story , one morning around 3 am in the mid 70' s I witnessed a scene which to me could only be described as the true spirit , grit , the good and the bad of NYC . One of the city ' countless unfortunate homeless people , a sweet looking little old lady was bundled up and sleeping away on one of the benches , oblivious to the activity taking place all around her which included a cleaning crew busy at work . The bad was that she had to be sleeping in the middle of the port authority terminal , but the good was that 2 burly workers gently lifted the bench ,taking extreme care not to wake her up , moved it , cleaned the area , and then gently brought her back to the original spot . I Love New York ! Thanks for post this video , loved it .

I've taken two very short bus trips to NYC where I didn't stay over, so the bus terminal was my home base to use the bathroom, to be honest. It's good that they have open bathrooms (as opposed to in a restaurant where you'd have to buy something and use a key like in my city). I went in what I thought was the same entrance on two occasions, yet I was faced with two different parts of the building. The place is a behemoth, massive. This video is showing places I didn't even know were in it.

I know people like to rag on PABT (like all bus terminals), but it's a remarkable facility in that it handles that much traffic while providing indoor concourses and gate areas throughout, like an airport. Most newer bus stations elsewhere in the country are little more than an agglomeration of curbside bus stops, and many local transit agencies don't use terminals at all for their commuters routes--instead they tell you to go stand and wait at this or that corner stop.

I've seen that ball display in september 1989 when I was leaving New York by Greyhound for my trip to San Francisco. As far as I could find it was made by the artist George Roads and installed in 1981. So nice to see it's still there! Thanks to You I can sort of revisit New York! I must say that the terminal looks a lot better than it did in 1989. It looked a bit rundown in my memory. Dark and in need fore some renovation.

My last visit to Manhattan & Brooklyn was in 2014. My hotel happened to be on the other end of the Lincoln Tunnel & commuted in by New Jersey Transit. It was overall a great experience & I was impressed with both of your large transit hubs, Grand Central & this Port Authority Terminal. What was the most interesting & somewhat scary experience was after a long day around 830-9pm my Wife, Sister In Law, & I were headed back to our hotel when we noticed a lot of emergency vehicles outside of the Port Authority Terminal. Over the PA system it was announced that the station was closed for the rest of the night & there be no more bus service. Having no clue how we would get back to our hotel (So Close Yet So Far!) after getting convoluted instructions from a friend on an alternative route, even that way we wouldn't be back @ the hotel best till 330am! Yes we could had taken a taxi though noticed too no one was being asked to leave so we just lingered around like the rest. What reason honest we've no clue. Maybe following the flock perhaps! Long story short I believe came 1145pm the station was reopened & we made a mad dash to catch what we hoped be our last bus running for that night! Luckily we got it with no problem. Story to be told upon return & later home! LOL!

We would often take the Martz Trailways milk run from Scranton into Port Authority throughout the 1990s. In fact, on Halloween, 1992, we went to see Frank Sinatra at Radio City. Our return bus was around 11:00 PM and I remember hoping over someone dressed in a gorilla suit sitting on the ground at our gate. I don't remember that main ticketing plaza; to purchase tickets, we had to go to one of the store locations where a ticket counter was housed.

I take the bus to the city from Jersey, so I am very familiar with the Port Authority. My dad worked for the Port Authority for many years until he retired in 1999. It has definitely changed and the classical music you hear is coming from the intercoms. In the 80s it was really bad there. No classical music and a lot of homeless people. It has definitely cleaned up since then. 😉

This is one of the few subway stations in the system to be accessible via ramps instead of elevators. Ramps take longer and more effort to use since they usually go in a spiral or zig-zag path due to the limited gradient but it has the benefits of not using any electricity, not being able to break down, not requiring maintenance and being cheaper and quicker to install. So the MTA should prioritize ramps and only choose elevators over ramps if there isn’t enough room or the height difference is too much.

It looks like mall 1st bus station next. Actually I was there way back in 2003. I took a 🚎 (PeterPan) from Boston. It got off the highway in the south Bronx crossed the Harlem River ,down fifth Ave. transversed Central Park then south on 9th or 10 Ave. Leaving NYC it left the station crossed the Hudson via the Lincoln Tunnel then through Secaucus and up not sure 95 ?

Buon giorno Action Kid. First off ? Let me say thank you for the referral on the video you sent me of your walkthrough of the holiday train. I have a question of that train though. Do the employees and passengers get dressed up like in clothing dating back to the early 20th century? At least on one specific day ?? Anyway i forgot about how big that bus terminal is. It is huge and to think Texans say everything in Texas is big... lol... anyway Grazie for another great as always video. I feel as though im getting re educated on that great city i was born. Have a great , great day. Ciao.

You’re welcome! The employees don’t get dressed up but there are many social groups and people who decide to wear clothing dates back to that time. There are even live bands who perform on the train too!

I believe there have been proposals to rebuild or replace the Terminal. It's not obvious from your interesting video what's wrong with the current setup.
