Toronto's Chinatown or Downtown Chinatown or West Chinatown is a neighborhood centered around the intersections of Dundas Street West and Spadina Avenue. It is one of many Chinatowns in the Greater Toronto Area. The present Chinatown was a result of the expropriating of the first Chinatown to make room for the Toronto City Hall. The area is home to numerous Chinese businesses, restaurants, grocery stores, and shopping malls.

Hey Action Kid, my partner and I live on Dundas and we’re happy and honoured to see our neighbourhood on your channel. You actually walked past the spot where we first met. We’ve been watching your walking vids since your early days, years ago, before you started narrating or showing yourself in your content. We became obsessed with your New York walking videos and then became very curious about you, and would try to catch glimpses of your reflection in store windows to see what you looked like. And now of course we feel like we’ve gotten to know you. Welcome to Toronto! We love your channel, thanks for all your work.

In the 1990s this Chinatown was jampacked, the streets were congested it took like hours to get through before they built the streetcars, buses were fighting their ways with cars and pedestrians. People had difficulties finding space for rent. Now so many Chinese came to Canada, they started to open Chinese plazas all over north, south, east, west of the city, you can say they're mini Chinatowns, like 5-6 if not 10 of them, so Chinese now have no need to come to this Chinatown to get their stuff anymore, this Chinatown now caters more to American tourists .

Action Kid...It's great to see you in Toronto's Chinatown. I've seen many of your videos. It may be hard to tell, but many of the buildings in Chinatown are 19th Century buildings. 11:55 The El Mocambo is a place where the Rolling Stones famously played an impromptu concert. A recording of that performance was released not long ago. If you had turned left at College St when you were walking north on Spadina you could have gone to T&T Supermarket. There, T&T has a smaller urban version of their large suburban supermarkets. If you continued further east on Dundas past University Ave, you would get to Old Chinatown. That's where Chinatown used to be before the current City Hall and the Eaton Centre were built. By the way, Congee Queen is a Hong Kong style restaurant with several locations around the Greater Toronto area. It's a nicer place that recently opened a location just north of the Eaton Centre. Stop by for a bowl of congee if you need something to warm you up. Maybe a get a deep fried dough stick to go with it (K62). They might have a takeout discount. www.congeequeen.com/menu-Yonge-Dundas.php Now that you've been to Toronto and Chinatown, you should watch Turning Red if you haven't already. It's a Pixar movie set in Toronto. You can see it on Disney Plus, but it's also available now on DVD/BluRay.

New Ho King was a huge after hours club kid stop. They open later than many Chinese restaurants. It was packed every weekend after 2:00 am. The food is okay. But they give you large portions for the money so people went in droves.

Amazing streets. In London England Chinatown’s are virtually non existent. We only have 1 Chinatown and it’s 1 block wide only. We have Indian towns etc but the Asian or East Asian community is non existent due to historical reasons. If we had vibrant chinatowns or East Asian communities in London then London would be the number 1 city in the world by a mile no question.
@bobbbxxx

Agreed; and the Chinatown in London seems mostly a tourist thing. Sometimes it seems the bigger the decorative Ceremonial Gate, the less authentic is the Chinatown. Most of the Chinese food I've had in the UK is the type of "American/Canadian" Chinese food that we used to have in North America back in the 1960's and 70's. Sweet and Sour pork, Chop Suey, Chow Mein, Egg fried rice, giant eggrolls stuffed with bean sprouts, honey or sweet and sour chicken balls, etc.. Not my favourite dishes.
@jmedz893
@jmedz893 Жыл бұрын
@@bobbbxxx I'm from London & your spot on with that comment .. Our Chinatown seems mainly a "tourist" thing nowadays compared to yesteryears. The problem we have is that because Central London is quite cramped & built-up, we suffer from over-tourism a lot of the times so a lot of spots in London are always overcrowded. And because of stereotypes & the historical nature of London - we have a lot of people coming over & taking the piss & simply moving on .. instead of taking things in humbly as a tourist or citizen. Maybe its the "stigma" that the UK has compared to other cities around the globe. And in regards to our gate - we have had incidences of people pulling the racist eyes when taking pictures in front of it - even when its crowded .. again, echoing that "tourist" aspect - almost like a circus rather than a place to visit.
@bobbbxxx
@bobbbxxx Жыл бұрын
@@jmedz893 That's disgusting; tourists can be vile. I think London is such a beautiful city. With land costs soaring and rising populations, I expect traditional London "ethnic" enclaves get gentrified and lose their old character. The "Brazilian" neighbourhood of Manhattan is so far out of the reach of most Brazilian immigrants that there are only a couple of restaurants. I find Chinatown in New York to be not a place I like anymore. Shame, really... but there you have it.

Pacific Mall is across the street from the Milliken GO train station on the Stouffville line. You could take a GO train from Union Station if you wanted to go. Maybe Johnny could help you with that. You may have to navigate around some construction at the Milliken station though as it's being upgraded. The pedestrian bridge might not be done yet. So if you go, you may have to cross at the Kennedy/Steeles Ave intersection. Not a big deal.

What's actually happened in Toronto is kind of sad. When I was growing up, if you went the main Chinatown in the 80's and 90's (where AK did this walk, as opposed some of the other Chinatowns), 80% of the people walking around were Chinese. You really felt you were in Chinatown. All you could hear was Chinese being spoken. It had way more stores and it was Chaos sometimes...lol. What's happened over the years is, many immigrants don't move into the areas or don't hang out in them anymore. Now you walk through Chinatown, I don't even know if 50% of the people walking around there are Chinese anymore. You'll hear people speaking every language under the sun and there's not nearly as many signs and interesting stores. It's kind of like you'll have Italians now living in Chinatown, and Chinese living in Little Italy..lol, so these these areas have lost some of their character.

I think it's similar to most other Chinatowns in North America now, and they tend to be quite run down too. Chinatowns in Australia on the other hand are better maintained and developed, they keep getting fresh skilled migrants and students due to its close proximity to Asia.
@bobbbxxx
@bobbbxxx Жыл бұрын
I think in general it is the same as traditional "ethnic" neighbourhoods like Little India, Kensington Market, Greektown, etc... as immigrants flourished with businesses and made money, they moved to what they thought were "better" neighbourhoods. I see nothing "sad" about Chinatown in Toronto just because it is a mixed crowd; it is a vibrant, living breathing market. It's not a tourist thing; it is a real marketplace.

Not really... it's mostly boring, god-awful suburbia once you leave downtown. Toronto has great areas outside of downtown (Riverdale, Parkdale, Leslieville, the Junction, Willowdale, Midtown etc are all quite good) and I'm sure AK will cover more but I wouldn't suggest anyone visiting for a few weeks to venture beyond that. Outside of the urban centres the GTA is a carbon copy of every other car-centric suburban wasteland and represents everything that's wrong with north american city "planning". There's a reason most of these urban exploration channels avoid the suburbs like the plague...

@@JohnnyLawrence293 I already listed some great spots outside of downtown in my reply (and AK already visited Parkdale/Queen West). You clearly have reading comprehension issues or don't know what downtown is. 99% of Mississauga, Vaughan, Brampton, Markham and much of Scarborough, Etobicoke etc is tragically awful and not worth venturing out to record. Why do you think the Toronto based walking channels seldom venture out to those car-centric wastelands? Because there's no interesting videos to be made other than showing how NOT to plan suburbia...
