I spent my early childhood in Almere. Watching this video is an almost visceral and emotional experience for me. My mother and I would casually walk in the Centrum. There was a time when I was pepper-sprayed as a young child by another, slightly older child on rollerblades who skated away afterward. Although that was a deeply traumatizing event for not only myself, but I'm certain it also vicariously traumatized those around me on that day who heard my cries for help, and the countless others who have heard me share that experience as part of my quest to heal and make sense of why or how that occurred. I say to that child, you are forgiven, and I hope you can forgive yourself if you haven't already done so. In closing, this video is overall reminiscent of a more youthful and innocent time in my life. I want to thank the uploader for sharing their video which allowed me to revisit a part of my childhood, and share my thoughts with all of you.

As a expat I love Almere, the beautiful new modern look just love it. Amsterdam is old, to many people everywhere, narrow roads higher crime rate, very expensive.

Nice video. The city somehow does not look very beautiful. Being modern is not a justification for being ugly. Utrecht Hoog catherine shopping mall is modern but is also beautiful. Money or lack of it is probably the reason for Almere not being very beautiful. Ofcourse compared to many other countries, the city center is beautiful

I have to agree. Quite unusual for a Dutch city, although it must be acknowledged that Almere is definitely a product of its time. Having been founded in the late 1970s, large parts of the city are reminiscent of the Brutalist movement that was popular in Europe around that time; lots of concrete, semi-highrise buildings everywhere, and a general lack of green space. I think this architectural movement is still quite visible in the city's design, even if quite some work has been done to bring more personality to the city in recent years. Despite these efforts, Almere still feels a bit... depressing.

The Actual center of the city indeed has a bit of a lack of green space, Though in the 21 years ive been living in Almere, A LOT has changed. Especially in the last 5 years where there is heavily infested in modernizing the city even further, adding more green space and parks. Its like Almere 2.0. Tho just walking for 5 to 15 minutes from the train station you can already reach like 4 different parks that are close by.

You are feeling wrong lmao. Almere is a green city. They even not mow the grass this year for 70% of almere so it could grow and grow. Almere got so much parks and woods. Just google map it and look through satelite. You will see.

Best shopping mall lmao. As a citizen of The Netherlands and living in Almere, i can say its really not good at all. Alot of shops are empty and for rental and theres alot of the same. Like 4 barbers in the same 100m. Or telecom shops. It has been better without the new part. But that was too small for the amount of people living in Almere so they had to expand.

Overplanned, too sterile and soulless. In my opinion, the problem with Dutch architecture is that it's becoming too monotonous. Pretty similar buildings can be seen appearing in almost any city.

Thanks for your video! I just can't be satisfied with how this city looks so mundane. The ''modern buildings'' have no soul or warmth. They have no intricate design, most of the buildings are built to look cheap and frankly, I'd rather see some buildings made from brown bricks here and there, some rooftops that aren't flat and some traditional dutch architecture mixed with a modern twist. This city looks like any modern boring city somewhere in the world. It had so much potential that's wasted, the same goes for the suburbs, which are copies of houses that go on for miles and miles with nothing to do. It's like they looked at American cities for inspiration instead of European or even Dutch cities to create the blueprint for this city. :( Wasted potential..
@GAZEwaze
@GAZEwaze Жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree with you. Cities that are allowed to renovate do not create a traditional texture or special architecture. Here and there we see buildings that are worth standing and watching, but more than anything else, it is important for municipalities to create new housing because the Netherlands is facing a housing shortage in general. So I think that living in a busy neighborhood with shops available for shopping and possibly a more modern (quasi-American) urban life is something that is considered more than anything else in urban design. But Holland has many cities that have preserved their old texture and traditional architecture, and I hope that if a new construction is to take place, it will serve to preserve the old urban texture. During my trip to some of these cities, they have been stunning and beyond my expectations at first glance.

@@GAZEwaze yes I agree! I have seen some video's of Dutch modern architecture with a very beautiful mixture of modern, intricate and a twist of traditional! "Holland Park" in Diemen and "Oostpoort" in Amsterdam. That is something I hope more uprising cities will implement in their urban designs! I will keep lurking on your page, so far I'm really enjoying your content! :)
