In this episode of my series “ Walks in Dorset”, I take a 4.5 mile circular walk from Worth Matravers (on the Jurassic Coast) down to Seacombe Quarry. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I park my car at the Northern end of the village of Worth Matravers (suggested donation £2) and make my way past the delightful pond to explore the Church of St Nicholas of Myra.
My route into the countryside starts with a wander along a footpath over fields, Eastwards, towards Seacombe Bottom where I follow a stream down to the coast.
Before exploring the abandoned quarry at Seacombe, I find an old “Allan Williams Turret” - a WW2 pillbox with a metal turret - high up on a hill.
I then make my way to the bottom part of the quarry & enjoy the sounds of the sea crashing against the rocks, before heading up to the upper part where there are remains of foundations of the quarry works.
My route then takes me Eastwards along the South West Coast Path to Dancing Ledge. Along the way, I drop down into Hedbury Quarry to check out a 12 Pound cannon from the Napoleonic Period (!).
At Dancing ledge, I start my return journey to Worth Matravers - most of which is uphill -taking in some of the magnificent views out to sea.
My final destination is the Square & Compass pub at Worth Matravers - one of my favourite pubs in Dorset!
