WALKS IN DORSET at TRENT, NETHER COMPTON & OVER COMPTON (INCLUDING THE POTATO CAVE!)

In this episode of my series “Walks in Dorset”, I take a 5.5 mile circular walk from the village of Trent which is located about 2.5 miles North West of Sherborne & 4 miles East of Yeovil. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I parked my car at the Trent village hall and began my walk with a wander through the village - which is full of beautiful houses & cottages. After visiting the church of St Andrews and passing close by Trent Manor House (famous for the role it played in the escape of Charles II after his defeat at the Battle of Worcester in 1651), I made my way into the countryside - initially heading for the Old Mill.
Upon reaching the mill, I followed the course of the Trent Brook to the village of Nether Compton - another quite stunning settlement with an amazing village green.
I continued Southwards to my next destination - the tiny village of Over Compton, where I visited the church of St Michael.
At this point, I headed East through some woods and came across the mysterious “Potato Cave” (also known as Tidy Cave). The cave dates to the Elizabethan period and was used by Sir Walter Raleigh (who lived at Sherborne Castle) to store spuds …. they needed to be kept in a cool, dark place to prevent them from turning green & becoming poisonous.
I then headed North along a couple of old tracks (Kitton Lane & Oatcroft Lane) before joining a section of the Monarch's Way - which took me back to Trent.
My final destination would have been the Rose & Crown pub at Trent but sadly it was closed due to refurbishments & wasn't going to open for another month (May 2024)!

Friday night isn’t Friday night without a new walk from the intrepid duo of Dave and Logan. What a wonderful part of the world made all the prettier in the beautiful Spring weather. The potato cave was a surprise. Where would we be without the ubiquitous potato?

Not sure Logan is a natural caver! But I loved the footage of him on the Monarch's Way. I remember when I was walking north of Sherbourne the Monarch's Way seemed to double back on its self and I think that was down to the to--ing and fro-ing between Charmouth and Trent. Very interesting and pretty walk with loads of history along the way. Thank you.

Thanks Jean. Yes, I think that Logan wasn't that keen to explore inside the cave! Charles certainly had a challenging escape from the battle for sure!

@@DaveFord What always surprises me is that most churches in the UK still seem to be open for anyone to visit. If that were the case here in New Zealand, they would be robbed and vandalised in no time. When I lived in England, no-one thought anything about the fact that churches were unlocked. I guess these days there is a little more worry about whether they are safe, but it's good to see that the practice continues.

The yellow stone you mentioned Dave is the local Hamstone, mined at Ham Hill, west of Yeovil, and most of the surrounding villages have that coloured stone. Indeed, Ham Hill is now a Country Park, well worth anyone's wander, as is a visit to the onsite pub, the Prince of Wales. Perhaps a venture outside your usual area is called for.

According to the dictionary, 'Nether'means lower or down. Near Andover, we have Over & Nether Wallop.(There is also a Middle Wallop, which is between the two villages) The name here is self explanatory as all three villages are on the Wallop Brook, which rises at Over Wallop. If you haven't been there, it's well worth a look. Very pretty cottages, but only one pub! Your walk was very pretty to watch, as I'm not familiar with that area. The potato cave was also interesting and some of the views were outstanding. Great video.
