The Forest of Dean is a geographical, historical and cultural region in the western part of the county of Gloucestershire, England. It forms a roughly triangular plateau bounded by the River Wye to the west and northwest, Herefordshire to the north, the River Severn to the south, and the City of Gloucester to the east.
The area is characterised by more than 110 square kilometres (42 sq mi) of mixed woodland, one of the surviving ancient woodlands in England. A large area was reserved for royal hunting before 1066, and remained as the second largest crown forest in England, the largest being New Forest. Although the name is used loosely to refer to the part of Gloucestershire between the Severn and Wye, the Forest of Dean proper has covered a much smaller area since medieval times. In 1327 it was defined to cover only the royal demesne and parts of parishes within the hundred of St Briavels,[1] and after 1668 comprised the royal demesne only.

Yes, St. Briavels , allegedly one of the most haunted castles in England but on the Welsh border. I remember seeing a video with Michaela from BBC SpringWatch/Autumn watch doing a spooky video in St. Briavels. Lovely church there and views across the wye valley opposite the castle.

It gave me such a joy to see all those "fox"gloves! Started laughing thinking about what kind ol' soul must have threw all those seeds out along the pathway cause the forest "just wasn't pretty enough." (you might remember me telling you this story of my Dad doing this on his walks) Then it gave me a tickle to think my Dad is prob up in heaven still casting his seeds out here & there "cause God hadn't made that area of Heaven quite pretty enough!" Ooohhh...now I have a tear in my eye!

The foxgloves are all over the place here, so not sure that they have been deliberately sown.

You can get some really good tree identifier apps for your phone, One that's called leaf snap looks good...it uses leaf recognition technology - you take a photo and it identifies it for you

Lovely first video Richard of the forest trip, I know what you mean about people looking at you suspiciously when your a single male out and about, its a shame. Im sure one of your patrons would have loved to walk with you too, Interesting about the enclosure stone. Id imagine very few people see that. With some of us working or unable to get out as much as we would wish its so nice to see you out in the wilds

Hi Richard, I am a Worthing local too. Near us we've got Houghton Forest, Eartham Woods and Kingley Vale North of Chichester. Are these places you visit? I do agree it's difficult to go anywhere really remote where you don't keep bumping into people.

Forget the wild flowers Richard, you need to be on the lookout for wild boar as they can be quite dangerous when they have young with them, did you see any while you were in the forest? My cousin lives in a house backing onto the forest and the boar there can be a real nuisance apparently, leaving the forest to root around in gardens.
@RichardVobes

I didn't see any sadly

As someone who lives in the Forest of Dean, I'd like to know what evidence you have used to term the boar 'dangerous'?

I said they CAN be dangerous when they have young with them, like any mothers they will protect their young, did you never see the film Old Yeller 1957? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m7qqqrZkna2vYac.html

@@RichardVobesthat is sad & unfortunate!!!! I am glad here in Oregon ( & other states) they declare Natuonal Forest so oiur ancient woodlands can be reserved & protected. Where logging is permitted they are required to replant a forest before they leave!

It's a mistake that many make when filming, but what you need to do is to turn the camera around away from yourself. By all means, have the camera on yourself at the beginning to make an introductory offering, and again at the end to make a closing offering, but in between the beginning and the end, the camera should only be on the environment you are in. I don't want to watch you carry a camera turned on yourself all the way through the video, I want to see the environment you are in, I don't want to see you except at the beginning and the end. Let me see the subject of your video, and you are not it!
