This is another video in my series “Walks in Hampshire” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode I am at Hambledon - a pretty village located about 12 miles North of Portsmouth.
My 3 mile circular walk starts & finishes in the village and takes me up Speltham Down, across open fields, through beautiful woodland and back through Litheys Hanger. Highlights include Madams Copse (well known for wild flowers - especially in the Spring) as well as some stunning countryside views.
After the walk, I drive 2 miles East of the village to the Bat & Ball pub and the Broadhalfpenny Brigands cricket pitch. The pitch is known as “The Cradle of Cricket” & I get the opportunity of recounting the history of the Hambledon Cricket Club - who used to play there.
The weather was perfect with sunshine & a light breeze on a glorious Spring day.

I use a GOPRO HERO 7 Black Action Camera (sometimes with a Gimbal) & a Rode microphone (either a “Shotgun” or a Rode Wireless Go) together with a Canon Powershot SX530 HS.

Trying my best Dave to watch all your videos. Logan and you had a beautiful day for a walk. The village was so lovely and countryside looked so peaceful as you said. Just so pretty. Take care Dave and Logan. ☀️

Childhood memories! I went to school not far from Hambledon and was very good at tennis. I asked our sports master about playing during sports lessons and he said "just over there is Broad halfpenny Down...You will play cricket!"

Lovely video on Hambledon. I remember staying with my Gran (Edna Savage) in Church Lane during the summer holidays (70's) and once popping in to visit Sarah Kennedy. I also remember checking in on Mrs Baker that had the house facing down the hill from Church Lane. My Gran used to park her White Morris Minor in her garage so my Grandad (Archie) would check up on her in the evenings. Only paraffin lighting was there and it so dark as I recall.

Brought back happy memories of the Bat and Ball, and when I worked for Friary Meux, part of Allied Breweries, the company that owned the pub in the 80's. One year we had a match between the Friary Meux team and an international 11 including a West Indian fast bowler, one Malcolm Marshall. On the first ball he delivered to the managing director, he ran, steaming in from what seemed like the boundary, and just before bowling, he switched to an under arm daisy cutter. Resulting in much laughter all round. The timber clad room on the first floor, which runs the full width of the pub, now part of the accommodation, was, many years ago, a meeting room and is I believe the inspiration for the long room at the MCC.

Ah, Hambledon. I was born there in the local hospital. I guess it was a small cottage hospital and is almost certainly not there anymore. My parents actually lived in the hamlet of Chidden, which is quite close by. The old cottage we lived in is no more. I must have been two years old when we left and moved to Warnford. Your walk has made me want to go back and look around. It certainly looked very pretty. Thanks for those memories Dave.
