This is another video in my series “Walks in Hampshire” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode I visit the pretty villages of Michelmersh & Mottisfont (just North of Romsey) & explore the surrounding countryside.
My 4.5 mile circular route starts at the Bear & Ragged Staff pub, just off the A3057 (where I leave my car), and I follow a single track tarmac road (part of the Monarchs Way) towards Michelmersh. After exploring the lovely St Mary's Church, I pass by some historic barns and a quite delightful thatched property before heading Northwards across open fields where I enjoy some quite stunning scenery.
I cross the A3057, past the old disused “Sprat & Winkle” railway line and over the enchanting River Test which looked wonderful in the morning sunshine. I continue on past a magnificent oak tree that has a girth of over 11 metres (!) and head on a path that takes me by the grounds of Mottisfont Abbey.
I check out St Andrews Church at Mottisfont before continuing South over the River Dun and by the earthworks of the disused Salisbury to Southampton Canal.
My journey takes me on the outskirts of the village of Kimbridge which gives me & Logan the opportunity of visiting the Kimbridge Barn Tea rooms for some light refreshment before heading back to my car.

Thanks Al. I got to the Kimbridge Barn Tea Rooms first (for "refreshments") so I didn't get a chance to go in the pub - but I must visit there sometime!

We went on this walk yesterday. Weather was beautiful, we started early as was supposed to get pretty hot, bearing in mind early October. Sensational views across the fields, Hampshire has some amazing countryside it is wonderful to get out and explore. We adore the stunningly clear chalk streams and was nice to see the wider section of the Test river. My partner loves tree photography so seeing that stupendous oak tree was fantastic for him, it really is a beast of a tree. It also made us consider that the oak tree may have been around to see the men in the Agincourt field as we went further on into Mottisfont. Thank you Dave, another super walk which we enjoyed and the dogs enjoyed dog dipping in the streams. Looking forward to ur next jaunt .

I’m currently convalescing after a nasty bout of Covid, finding it hard to concentrate on books or TV and missing being able to get out with my two WHVs. I stumbled upon your films and have thoroughly enjoyed watching you walk some of my favourite routes. Mottisfont, Wherewell are both regular haunts of mine. Thank you so much for posting these films. They’ve proved quite a tonic. I particularly like watching Logan trot along in the sunshine. Roll on full recovery so I can get back out and maybe discover some new walks from watching your videos.

Thanks for your kind comments. I hope that you recover from the Covid soon & are able to get back out again in the near future. It is such a pretty area around there. I have recently made another film of a walk from Wherwell to Goodworth Clatford - it will be published in February so do look out for that! Thank you for watching.

Hello Dave, I loved that walk old churches and lovely rivers,. I was lucky enough to be given a days fishing once on the Oakley beat which I believe is where the river was diverted to bring it closer to Mottisfont house. I was able to have a close look at that great oak it must be 6 or 7 hundred year old. Great walk.

That was so lovely, I forget how beautiful Hampshire is beyond the urban sprawl of Southampton. Thank you Dave and Logan. I have put that walk on my to do list. Take care.

Lovely area to walk, Dave. At first I thought you might have passed the Michelmersh brick works, but it looked as if you took the lane up from the pub. We enjoyed a nice beer in their garden a couple of weeks ago. I know all the area quite well, but l haven’t walked the beautiful paths that you followed and the river Dunn, which must give its name to Dunbridge. I also didn’t know of a canal between Romsey and Salisbury. Great video. Look forward, as always to the next one.

Thanks Lionel. It looks a nice pub - I stopped off at the Kimbridge Barn Tea Rooms for the "end of walk refreshment" so didn't get a chance to visit it. Must rectify that soon.

@@DaveFord Yes. I haven’t visited Kimbridge Farm tearooms. I believe there we’re tearooms there some years ago, but they closed sometime before lockdown. For the life of me, I can’t remember what it was called? Something like Annies tearooms. I went there once, but the next time I tried, they had gone.
