Amazing lesson on sus chords. An especially great companion lesson to Mark Levine’s jazz piano book. His chapter on this was hard to digest but you cleared up my confusion and added some great perspective. Thank you! 🙏🏾

Really well explained. I've read about sus chords a bunch of times but I feel I actually understand how to use these sus chords now as well as how the thirds work. Your point about building in 4ths was interesting too. I'm going to try using that when I want to make more ambient / spacey compositions.

Wouldn’t a Gsus9 with added 3rd be just a G11?

I used to discover the sus b9 chord before by randomly combining notes on my keyboard, it sounds like Japanese music and I am sure a certain modal color is inside this chord. The b9, which is also a b2, distinguishes the Phrygian from the minor mode. The sus13 chord really has a feeling of mixolydian while the major 7 chord feels like lydian. Generally, specific chord does have a feeling of certain mode. Sometimes I feel that with the increasing of tensions, the modal feeling becomes clearer

Yeah, definitely. Certain chords definintely feel like certain modes. To me a Maj7 chord also sounds like the Lydian. And the m7 chord sounds like the dorian. But I think is this largely subjective and depends on how much exposure you've had to different kinds of music. But I agree.

Yes, a sus b9 chord with the 4th would have the exact same intervallic structure as the Japanese Insen scale (often used in shamisen and koto music), that being 1 4 2 3 2 semitones. For instance, a Gsus b9 chord having the notes of G, Ab, C, D, F would be identical to a G Insen scale (though the Insen scale has 5 modes). You've got a good ear for noticing this parallel. Also, if you flatted the 5th as well, you'd get the In scale (which also has other modes and names such as Hirajoshi, and Iwato).

Thanks for the video, it was incredibly comprehensive and useful! I was wondering if you were planning on doing something similar with Phrygian chords?

+Oliver Grey I wasn't planning to tackle Phrygian chords just yet. But I can try write up a lesson plan and make a video in the next few weeks.

+Oliver Grey Hey, Oliver. So apologies in advance. I made a video on Phrygian chords, but it turned into a bit of a monster. I originally was not planning for it to go for 20 minutes...but turns out there's quite a bit of stuff to cover. Explaining Phrygian chords required me to go into quite a bit of theory, so ummm...sorry... Anyway, if you're still interested, check it out here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/opZkm9Z1zZi8cmg.html and good luck...

thanks i just noticed that a sus chord with 3 in the bass makes a C maj 6/9 chord :)
@WalkThatBass
@WalkThatBass 8 жыл бұрын
+hangroover If you're playing a G9sus and you wanted a cleaner CMaj69 sounds, I'd get rid of the F and replace it with an E. The F (11th from a C's Point of View) is an avoid note and sounds a bit off. But you can certainly play around with different voicings.

Yes sure I agree with you but I reread my message there was a mis understanding I will write it again my point was if you take Gsus7 chord and put minor third in the bass you get Bb major 6/9 chord

Thanks for this - if I was shown the chord Eb13sus, how would this be played?
@WalkThatBass
@WalkThatBass 7 жыл бұрын
However you like, really. You just have to fit in all or some of the notes of the chord (especially the 4th and 7th). So Eb13sus = Eb Ab Bb Db F C An easy way is to play DbMaj7/Eb = Eb - Db F Ab C (and leave out the Bb) But you could voice it in a number of different ways. I cover some general chord vicing rules here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p7SWmZN_v8-8c2w.html Check it out if you like. It explains how to think and go about voicing chords, including this one.

Most tutorial videos use the key of C major for the majority of examples since it has no accidentals, and since suspended 7th chords (at least in jazz) are usually used in place of the V7 chord, it makes sense to use Gsus as an example.
