During WW2 German bombers would often dump all their bombs when intercepted to lighten the load and increase their speed in an effort to get away, there were a lot of bombs dropped around the Essex coast and my Essex born grandfather complained that not once did they have the decency to hit Jaywick, I don't think he was a fan of the place.

What a nasty remark to say, during the war Jaywick Sands would have been a fairly new holiday village and that’s all it was intended to be, admittedly it is a bit of a dump nowadays but it was never meant to be a permanent solution

I used to holiday in Jaywick with my family in the 1960s and 1970s. Have many happy memories of this little seaside town and often go back for a visit. It's very quiet now but used to be really busy. We went to look at property in Clacton and decided to take a look at some of the caravans for sale. We saw the sign for Jaywick, at the start there was some lovely places but as we got deeper in, we saw a man hanging out of a huge bin legs in the air, next a boy with his parents laying flat out on the streets, weed was starting to be smelt the deeper in we went and all that I thought was, I'd never want to break down here at night. Saw people sitting on door steps stoned, broken windows and run down homes. I had read about Jaywick a year ago as to how it became this way. I really don't know how they'll ever change it. It could be a lovely place a stone throw from the sea, it's just heart breaking to see the decline and poverty.

At 55 years of age fate saw me and my late wife retire. Wife was ex nurse, 12 hour shifts 5 / 6 days a week, me on 14 hour nights on AERO space parts production some weeks 12 nights long. lived a great life WHEN not at work.. March 2003 it stopped overnight.. We had a family of 5 home, 3 bed extended semi nice area but no income for me, only the wifes.. what to do.. Sold it all up, bought into Jaywick, was a small bungalow on 2 1/2 plots, we had it extended, eventually ended up with a patio, a grandkids fenced off garden, a 26 foot long car port for my landrovers behind a gated entrance in the next road.. Own it all outright and been retired here 18 years so far, sadly the wife only had 12 years in retirement bless her but she lived life well before cancer took her/ thats life it happens.. SO GLAD I SOLD UP EARLY AND RETIRED.. Here till I die, and still "only" 74 - lol

I recall seeing something somewhere that Jaywick was the victim of NIMBY-ism from neighbouring areas thus denying them facilities. It eventually became run down and a place where people were effectively "dumped" because it was cheap. I am so happy to see that there is some life being injected into the area - not surprising really as a nice location on the Essex Coast with house and land prices such as they are would never ever remain cheap for long - the seaside will always attract people and bring in speculation - it is I think how Jaywick started.

Just look on rightmove house sales for CO152JZ for local prices, yes some are ex rental but lots are nice owned properties with prices rising fast at last. The beach front walkway shown has nice sized bungalows for well over £200.000 while ex rentals in the worst part of brooklands go for £50.000 with lots needing work before the buy to let landlords buy them..You pays your money and takes your pick as always.

got to get rid of £50 million a year of benefit people and probably 5-10 times that amount needs spending. Even to think about knocking down what is currently there. if the country could put up a spare £3 billion. Maybe something would happen. But even the biggest housing developers can't tough the area with that kind of money needing to be spent?

JAYWICK was not built as a slum area,it was turned into a slum by tennants.
@dalskiBo
@dalskiBo Жыл бұрын
Incorrect, it was built as temporary summer houses only, which is well documented & known. After WW2 the need for housing & the incompetent selling-off of government housing moved tenants into the originally designed temporary housing. The local council earned a reputation for non prosecution of unscrupulos private landlords, uninterested in their tenants welfare nor meeting their legal obligations to provide fit housing, which attracted the worse private landlords, parasytically feeding from the locals. It all stems from the local council's failure to prosecute rogue landlords in a timely manner, they are not prote tung their people. You would not pay for repairs to a landlords building. The whole systemic rent-seeking landlord brings no value, it extracts value. Most people in UK cannot afford to do that, nor should they be knocked for having not done so.

I find Jaywick strangely appealing and feel I could happily live there. It looks kind of retro, and scruffy but comfortable. It's also good that much effort is taking place to remove the rough edges. I understand what you mean when you liken it to Venice Beach, but comparing the two is, in football terms, like comparing the Premier League to the National League. Venice Beach has great infrastructure, while Jaywick has small stands with few or no facilities.

They were against the original holiday chalets in Brooklands at the beginning and then pretended they weren't there for 50 years ..

Best thing about Jaywick is it's beech! Personally I've always preferred to spend time around the Jaywick beach bar, and loved that I could get a cup of tea/something to eat/ice cream. Used to visit with my dog when she was alive and she loved spending time on the beach. You can walk along the sea front all the way to Clacton. The area is very run down and looks unloved, I suspect the local council has little interest in the poorer area that is Jaywick and hasn't invested a lot of time or money there. Last time I was there (3 yrs ago) all street lights were turned off at midnight (great for burglars!). Watched bin men remove household waste, drop lots on the ground and just leave it there to fly around! Go in middle of winter, and you'll be depressed in no time!

I'd never heard of Jaywick until I saw the TV program about people on benefits in the town the crime and deprivation. I did think at the time that it should be better for a family than a large council estate and the wee cottages could be nice if they were better maintained. The people featured in the programme though seemed more interested in drinking, fighting and complaining

I spent a lot of my childhood in jaywick in the 1970s and spent many happy times with my children right next to that little hut on the beach, jaywick has a bad reputation but I still enjoy visiting to this day and it’s good to see investment put into the area.

This brought back memories. When I was a kid, we used to holiday at Butlins Clacton. On a certain day there used to be a market on in Jaywick and we would walk there along the front. Every single year we made that walk, until my brother and I were old enough to be left at the camp while mum and Dad went.

To a degree this looks sort of nice because it hasn't been developed very much. There aren't cheap multicoloured printed signs plastered on every available surface like a lot of the other UK beachfronts.

Was just thinking that. Nice to be somewhere without all the mod cons. Who knows, maybe people will crave this sort of ‘underdevelopment’ in the future. Of course the area needs job etc but not sure it needs any fancy new homes.

Looks like there are so many people are moving houses, even seeing things getting damage and destroyed it quite sad. Even seeing rubbish being damped, it doesn't look that nice. It is quite good that you can get a bit of history when visiting Jaywick, looks like everyone went on there hoildays back in them days. Now look at it now! It be very interesting to see that new building to see how well it does.

I grew up in st osyth, just a couple of miles away from here and as kids we spent lots of time in jaywick, either swimming in the sea or playing in the arcades (there used to be more of them) the place gets a lot of stick and there is a lot of poverty and unemployment as being a seaside town the work is mainly seasonal and low paid , whatever you think of jaywick I still can’t help but be in love with the place and always will, I hope the redevelopment brings much needed prosperity once again to a place that millions of Londoners will have fond memories of

Just a shame you never showed the better rebuilt or redesigned housing further down Brooklands road or noticed the completely insulated and modernised heating and hot water systems via Air Sourced Heat Pumps plus the new side roads but hey, its My Jaywick I retired to from Choice 18 years ago/ here till I die. There is so much you could add to this with a little background knowledge. It is probably one of the most fascinating places in the UK, did you know before all the holiday homes were built in the 30s that someone had the idea to make a profession oval race track not unlike the Brooklands track? Although Brooklands is part of Jaywick, it is it's own suburb known as Brooklands, where all the roads are named after famous car manufacturers that raced at Brooklands. During it's hay day in the 60s and 70s it hosted a Sunday market, which was a destination for many holidaymakers, often so packed you could hardly move. The Poladium by then was called Sunspot and was a very popular amusement arcade, the actual meeting rooms was a building next door, but long gone by the 70s. I feel you could have easily done a 30 min walk/video around Jaywick and Brooklands. Such a rich history and such a pity it was a failed experiment leaving the beach huts in Brooklands to become residential. Sadly it was bought as a whole and sold as individual plots from around £50 with a hut built in the 30s, sold almost as a status symbol to Londoners whom enjoyed visiting Jaywick for places like The Morrocco a once famous club in Jaywick.

Always wondered why it was called Brooklands did actual race cars belt round the track ? When did they start building chalets..
@adder2204
@adder2204 Жыл бұрын
@@nicholaswilliams4336 The track was never built, it was just a dream and only got as far as a plan on paper. But Brooklands is definitely a tribute to the famous track and as the actual race track in resigned to history along with most if those famous manufacturers that have been disolved by larger companies, Brookland in Jaywick imo should be not only regenerated but improved because in a few more decades and generations these famous car manufactures and the race track will be resigned to history.

Jaywick is testament to poor planning. There are lots of other examples around Britain of towns that grew from city overspill but without proper construction and without proper facilities and local resources, and then people are surprised that these places aren't well off. I don't know what the solution is for somewhere like Jaywick, but it is almost certainly about more than just "spending money". Of course, Jaywick shouldn't just be thought of as a problem to be solved. I've been there and although it's poor, it it does have a community feel. I worry that it's location, though pleasant next to the sea, makes it a difficult place to develop.

I used walk from St Oyseth to Jaywick along the sea wall during the 60s, it was pretty run down even then, used to have a bingo hall and a roller skating ring, not much else, I'm betting within 10 years it will be unaffordable and totally transformed

That beach bar back in the 70s had trampolines on the sand and I used to use them and make believe I was in the film Jaws 🤣😂 it felt like america to me especially as summers were really hot back then. Its only a matter of time and then it will be a place where homes are too expensive to own. It always happens and should its a great place 😊

I’ve seen videos on this place before and I quite like it. I know what you mean about Venice Beach, that and a 70’s holiday park. I’ve just checked on property prices, around £350,000 for a bungalow. Cheers Tim.
