Amazing it coped so well with tarmac. Trouble is you have now wrecked 3 blades by overheating them and a chisel for digging out the tarmac. A water cooled diamond saw is the correct tool for the job. Mains cables on driveways have to be buried at least 600mm down and covered with hazard tape too with a layer of sand before re tarmac.

Not to mention the data cable just laying bare in the trench. I shudder when I see sparkies installing telecoms.

As long as you have some half decent blades a wall chaser will go through almost anything. I have a Bosch one, and it's about 15 years old, I have used it on stone, brick, concrete, tarmac, screed etc etc, never missed a beat.

A 9'' or 12'' angle grinder with a diamond disc for soft material (yes, tarmac is classed as a soft abrasive) would have done the job quicker, easier and at a better depth.

Wow! I felt sure that I would see the blades melting the tarmac and clogging up the Metabo! Personally I would have tried an angle grinder with a bunch of cheap Aldi blades, but hey ho, nothing ventured, nothing gained, it all worked out in the end. Well done!

Before watching: too much chance of sticky tar bunging up chaser and vacuum hose. Would have used breaker, pick, trenching tool. Did that with our house to replace lead water pipe, internet service provider cable, power to bike shed and light on wall with pavement. Then concrete and block paved over. Works great so cables and pipes can be fed through and pulled out if ever need to change them. After watching, very impressed though there SDS bits that would scoop out material quickly

Sorry, but I would have put both cables in heavy PVC conduit 18 inches deep. What happens if damage is done to the new driveway a few years from now and someone tries to cut out the damaged section to make a repair? There go the cables. Whoever was installing the new driveway could have dug a proper trench and put the PVC in place.
@davidcross303 жыл бұрын
He did say they were putting slabs over the driveway so that will make it deeper. Also the cables are up out so can be seen where it goes. They would be an absolute cowboy to not know there is a cable under there somewhere. To each there own though 👍

@@davidcross30 I'm just speaking from experience here. When I had my driveway dug out and an asphalt one installed 20 years ago the heavy trucks carrying the stone crushed the thin wall drain pipes that were deeper down. The earth looked like it was a sponge - sinking 6-8 inches and springing back up as the trucks drove over it. Since then I had heavy dumpsters do damage to the driveway when filled with tons of old plaster and roofing. I wish that someone at the time would have advised me to have any items running under my driveway placed in heavy duty pipes down deep.

@@jimmylovescake6813 If it was me doing the job from scratch I wouldve trenched it and got a decent depth on the cable but in Nick's instance hes only gone a few inches. It's a fair point about the galvanising but it is pretty damn robust stuff and is marketed for internal and external use and corrosion resistant, would definitely offer mechanical protection for many years..

Definitely wants to be deeper, 450mm minimum and a duct would of been a good idea. The way I see it would you take the Niceic assessor to inspect it in your yearly visit. If answer is no then I’d try come up with another method of install

Doesn't look like outdoor rated cat6. My background isn't electrical work, it's mostly in telecommunications, but usually outdoor-rated data cabling (copper) is black. If you have the wrong type then UV will quickly damage the outer coating, and then the water will wreak havoc on the copper itself.

There are only guidelines. 450mm for for foot paths. 600mm for carriageways. Deeper than a pitchfork for a garden. If you already have it, you use it. A 9 grinder must pass twice on a wall and here it would have been the same because in one pass the disc will probably fracture.
