You need to check if the Anker links N+E when there is no earth from the grid. If it doesn't then a TT system is of heehaw use, there will be no L->E potential.

You guys started talking about Jackery as small power units, then looked at Bluetti which you talked highly of... Strange that you're on Anker for this (Anker have always been good) and not used the Bluetti that you used to have??

Something to be aware of when switching an installation to backup - if you have a central heating boiler, you may need to link the neutral and earth on your backup supply, otherwise the flame failure detection won't work and it shuts the gas off. Probably wise to do anyway otherwise your RCDs won't be effective

I was going to post link out the phases but you beat me to it. You could in theory run your unit when you are there off-grid couldn't you? And if you are allowed to have solar on the roof charge the power bank up from that as well as power your unit when you are not there. I think that's right. Also, you are paying for 3 phase when you only need single.

I’ve got a couple of Anker usb (A&C) to iPhone lightning cables and also a USB c charger and all of them are by far the best I’ve ever had, the cables I’ve had for over three years and show no signs of breaking, although when plugging lightning plug into iPhone is did struggle to work plugged in one way, so have it a clean with electrical contact cleaner and fine now. I wonder if you could use the smaller add on battery to ‘trickle’ charge the larger main battery especially if your using solar for this reason and you have typical British weather. I’d like to think this will be one of these products where you can forever be trying to think up new ways to make the best use out of it/them. And/or the product(s), become Smarter giving you more options or it automatically works out best usage for you. If energy prices continue rising, I can see this becoming more popular.

Hey nick, you can buy a three phase to single phase linking kit which will allow you to still use any of the ways on the board rather than just L1

You need to disconnect the pme earth whilst on self generation. As any fault current can back feed the grid causing issues to any lines staff working on the system

I don’t see the point in a separate earth. Surely that battery storage works a bit like a shaver point. Completely isolated for making any complete path to earth as in the spiked ground.
@persona250
@persona250 21 сағат бұрын
Electricity is returning to its source not the ground . The earth rod is needed if you are stood on the ground and touch the live wire it will return to the source and disconnect the rcd .
@robintodd3901
@robintodd3901 21 сағат бұрын
@@persona250 on the battery pack I’d say you could touch live and the actual ground you stand and be fine all day long as the battery pack is separated and has no path via the ground. Hence my reference to similar as a shaver point.
@persona250
@persona250 21 сағат бұрын
@@robintodd3901 yes the battery pack is likely 50v dc but unfortunately it transforms through the inverter to 230v ac so needs the earth rod .

Be careful, some energy suppliers charge commercial 3 x kwh of the highest phase current which means if you run everything on L1 you’ll be triple charged for usage. Best way is to leave stuff over 3 phases then bridge L1.2.3 on the off grid side.
@protectiongeek
@protectiongeek 22 сағат бұрын
No, they don’t. Well, not in the U.K. Supply contracts for commercial premises can vary but essentially are based on kVA demand (not kW, so poor power factor is penalised) and units consumed.

Regarding the earthing arrangements; the provision of an independent, measured earth electrode for use while 'off-grid' is a 'shall' requirement of ENA-ER G99 (clause 8.3.3 pp79 of G99 Issue 1 Amd 9) as the DNO earth terminal cannot be relied upon during an unplanned outage. For TN supplies, BS7671 currently _recommends_ an additional connection to earth in Reg 411.4.2, whether a switched alternative supply is available or not. I have seen some discussions online recently amongst electricians (in the UK) who debate whether an installation (with an independent earth electrode, of course) that can operate with a switched alternative supply (as in this video) or in island mode (from a normally interconnected alternative source) should also disconnect from the DNO earth while 'off-grid'. Issues with diverted neutral current on PME (TN-C-S) supply networks could conceivably impose unwanted voltages on the earthing of an 'off-grid' installation if the DNO earth terminal and the independent earth electrode are connected (which has been the convention for a long time), so I can understand why a complete disconnection of all live conductors and earth from the DNO might be desirable. Finally, keep in mind that while off-grid, you must earth the neutral of the installation - requirement of the ESQCR in the UK. Some of these portable 'power stations' don't react favourably to a neutral-earth interconnection. I'm not sure if the Anker product will cope or not.

Hello Nick . A typical pv inverter or genset would never try find a return path through the supply network. Electricity tries to return to its source which is always the inverter or genset which will have a neutral earth link inside . The earth rod is to return current for anyone receiving a shock to the actual ground .
@protectiongeek
@protectiongeek 22 сағат бұрын
Any alternative source of electrical energy such as an inverter with battery or genset is capable of applying lethal voltages to the supply network, hence the requirements for break-before-make changeover switches or similar. Part of the purpose of a measured earth electrode is to facilitate protection against electric shock but serves other purposes, principally the provision of a reference point for system voltages.
@persona250
@persona250 21 сағат бұрын
Yes I understand. My comment is aimed at Nick saying if the supply earth is lost the generator would lose its earth path . Reference only required for 3phase generator …

I used cheap grid tie limiters for my home battery set up. I then upgraded to a victron multiplus 5000. Amazing bit of kit and although seems expensive compared to competitors it is so flexible and you can customise lots of settings. I use mine as a grid tie limiter to reduce my electric bills and it saves me at least £100 a month at the moment.
